Subject: Will dance, pop and hip hop ever merge again?

Written By: doublejm1 on 11/18/18 at 1:40 pm

In the mid-2000s, we saw the likes of Timbaland, Ciara, Missy Elliot, Rihanna, Chris Brown, T-Pain, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Akon, and Beyonce fuse hip hop with pop and/or electronica in their music. That led to collaborations like Justin Timberlake and 50 Cent in "Ayo Technology."

Then, in the late 2000s/early 2010s, came DJs such as David Guetta, who teamed up with hip hop artists to produce songs like "Day N Nite."

Nowadays, you might hear a song pop up here and there that blends the genres (e.g., Adam Levine with Future or Cardi B), but it's rare. Hip hop, pop, R&B, and dance seem to have all gone their separate ways.

Do you think dance and pop will ever make a comeback in hip hop, or is trap/mumble rap here to stay?

Pop went away in the 90s  (92) to grunge and didn't come back until 1997 due to the Spice Girls which kicked off the y2k era.
Then that pop era ended in mid 2001 and pop went away until 2008  (2006 with a brief flirtation)

Pop wont be back for awhile

Something tells me now, a new genre in pop music will come along.

I think in the early 2020's, since that would be about 16 years after the mid 00's, and Gen Z will be the age that Millennials were back then.
