Subject: how will the 2010s (8th gen) consoles/games be remembered

Written By: floppy on 11/29/18 at 12:58 pm

almost every console gen has something its known. Like how the 6th gen first brought us online gaming on consoles 7th brought hd and motion controls to home consoles. I think the 8th gen has a lack of identity compared to the others because of the lack anything substantial.

Is the Switch considered Gen 8 or 9? Because versatility of home consoles is definitely something new and interesting and needs to be expanded on

Walkie talkie movie games and 30fps. As for the games, this gen will be synonymous with Dark Souls(Soulsborne in general for that matter), Fortnite, Rocket League, Breath of the wild and Sony exclusives in general.

Probably nothing other than the failure of the Wii U.

I feel like that generation is more memorable, like the OP mentioned about the motion controls especially with the Wii. Also wireless controllers and streaming apps.

Many things since it's one of the biggest leaps in gaming.

Online gaming(technically started with 6th gen but was obscure and extremely limited in function), HD gaming, Motion gaming, Fleshed out user interfaces, the start of having to install and update games like on a PC, wireless controllers, etc. As for games, brown and gray first person shooters like COD will be what it's most remembered for.

7th gen is the definitive starting point of modern gaming and the official end of retro gaming.

The 4th to 5th Gen was the most exciting and noticeable change, when it went from 2D/side-scrolling or overhead to 3D.

Unfortunately for gaming, there's not much left to be done that hasn't already been done. The final frontier is VR which still has yet to really go mainstream (we're getting there very slowly but surely!) Every generation used to be exciting and novel:

1st gen: Start of at-home gaming (Pong based games)
2nd: At-home arcade gaming
3rd: Fully fleshed out 8-bit games
4th: 16-bit graphics
5th: 3D gaming
6th: 128-bit graphics & some online gaming
7th: Touch screens, motion controls, system menus, mainstream online gaming
8th: ...better graphics?

I would consider the Switch 9th gen b/c the dock/TV thing is revolutionary and the only real new thing gaming's had in years.

More on topic with the OP question, the most memorable aspect of 2010's gaming will probably be the impact of YouTube on gaming (walkthroughs, livestreaming, competitive tournaments, etc.).
The biggest games were Angry Birds, the endless COD games, Minecraft, Roblox, GTA 5, Flappy Bird, Agario, Overwatch, Pokemon Go, PUBG, Mario Odyssey, Zelda BOTW, Fortnite, and the rise of competitive Smash
