Subject: Things 2019 will be remembered for

Written By: 2001 on 01/03/19 at 6:40 pm

New year new thread! 2019 just started, so there isn't much that defines the year yet. Nonetheless, the point of this thread is to chronicle the major events of 2019 as they happen, because we tend to forget what topics were on the top of our minds at the beginning/middle of the year by the time we've reached the end.

I'll start

* Democrats take control of the US House of Representatives.
* Chang'e-4, a Chinese lunar probe, is first to land on the far side of the moon (the dark part of the moon that faces away from the Earth).
* Global stock markets take a beating as sluggish Chinese manufacturing output signals a slowdown in their economy.

Written By: Howard on 01/04/19 at 7:22 am

* Trump shutting down the government
*wage increase to $15

The year that doesn't very feel 2010s and where the pop culture collapse happened leading to a nuclear implosion vibe and won't feel dated at all when we're in 2029 because so much of 2019 will still be relevant 10 years from now on.

I'd say President Donald J. Trump is impeached by the House of Representatives immediately two weeks after Robert Mueller's report is finished & released.

If that truly happens I'm curious how our mood and culture will shift as a result, if at all. Would there be a sense of peace, or chaos?

Here's the thing, if he were to get impeached, it doesn't automatically guarantee he'd be removed from office. Thus, the charges that he is inflicted for his impeachment would matter greatly for his political future. If the charges are serious enough to seriously incriminate 'The Donald' for any massive wrongdoing, then he'd likely be removed from office, although to avoid complete & utter disgrace he would follow Nixon's playbook by simply resigning. If he were to do that, then that would probably embolden Democrats in winning the presidency in 2020, regardless of which candidate they nominate. They'd surely win as the successor to Trump, most likely being Pence, would be tied to Trump's failed presidency, and (lets be REAL) Republicans are not going to be that enthusiastic in voting after their conservative champion was just ousted, not to mention Pence lacking any sort of charm.

That, is likely going to be the DNC strategy going into this new year, but will this plan's objective actually come into fruition, I (and many others) remain skeptical. We'll have to see.

It's far more crazy than simply denying science.

Nothing too bad. It was just bland with not really any good songs to add. Maybe I was just expecting too much.

Anyhow, so far in 2019:

- R Kelly getting charged
- Jussie Smollett
- AOC
- Government shutdown(s)
- Captain Marvel

Now that 2019 is two thirds done and at end of summer, I can say that it has been bland and lacking in character. Anyhow, here's what I came up with:

- Area 51 memes, Popeyes vs. Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich wars, Face App challenge
- Disney buying Spider-Man
- US buying Greenland?
- Multiple mass shootings and blaming video games
- Amazon fires (not the tablets)
- "Sucker" by Jonas Brothers, "Without Me" by Halsey, "Bad Guy" by Billie Ellish.
- Avengers: Endgame, Lion King remake, and the last Star Wars

That's all I can think of for now so please feel free to add.

Yeah I was half/half on this prediction ;D. I was right that Muller's report would drop and that immediately after that the 'Impeachment train' would be now given new life for the Democratic caucus (I think about 70-80% of the caucus now supports it). However, I was too bullish in thinking that Trump would be immediately impeached. Support for impeachment, despite how callous this administration has operated in the last 6-12 months (the Trade War, our escalation with Iran, the emboldening of Saudi Arabia and Israel in their blatant human rights abuses, etc. etc.), is still very low, even among Democratic voters. However, with the base of DNC support that is pushing the caucus towards impeachment, most Democratic house members now supporting it, and Jerry Nadler now having a (preliminary) inquiry on these crimes, it's only a matter of time for the announcement from the House of how the Administration committed "High Crimes and Misdemeanors".

For the rest of 2019 (and even into 2020) if the momentum continues going down the impeachment route, expect to hear nonstop on the silver screen on "Trump's crimes" and "The need to uphold the Constitution". Various exhibitions in support or in adversity to the alleged crimes of the administration. Non stop, off the wall, 24/7 coverage. It's going to get ugly :(.

Trump isn't as uniquely wacky that he has been in the past though. One could argue that he's actually calmed down a little bit this year (or more likely that we've been becoming more num to it :-\\). Anyways, Trump's shenanigans is just sensationalist media right there. Now I do think some of the policies that he did this year, such as him crossing over the DMZ in North Korea (being the first President to do so), him 'almost' invading Iran, and the major escalation of the US-China trade war, among others that I can't think of right now, is what is going to be more memorable about 2019 in 10-15-20 years.

It's not a foregone conclusion that he will. Many people including me want him out as soon as possible.

Just like it's not a forgone conclusion that the New York Yankes will go all the way this year. Many people are speculating that, given that said team has played well this year (even last weekend, when they faced the L.A. Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, many people thought that might be a potential World Series preview; but still, you can't be 100% certain)...but you never know what the rest of the regular season will bring, or how the postseason will play out.

I heard it's really rare for a president to only have one term I think it only happened once or twice? The circumstances are usually severe so that's why I think he will win because there is no big economic meltdown or anything.

Last president who had only one term was Bush Senior. He was defeated for reelection in '92. Bush Sr's popularity went downhill for much of 1992 before the General Election, due in part to economic crisis and things like that.

Well, several Dems are working hard to unseat that guy and the nomination is still up for grabs. Not only that, the General Election is still fourteen months away. They believe he is a clear and present danger, based on his demeanor and lack of previous political experience... and that eight years of him would be torturous (worse than GWBush, whose popularity went downhill in his final full year in office).

And I still stand by my hope for the Yankees to be defeated this year; they've already won way more pennants (and World Series titles) than everyone else. And if they do get to the World Series this year, I root for whichever NL team gets in (hopefully not the Braves).

The pop culture in 2019 was pretty boring. Nothing really stood out for me except for the songs Old Town Road, bad guy, Lose You to Love Me, Truth Hurts, and SeƱorita.

EDIT: Oh, and Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper lol

Some of the memes like the yelling woman and cat were great, but the memes weren't as bountiful as 2018's.

Overall, I can't really see myself looking back on the pop culture of 2019 with much interest and optimism in the future.

2019 with everything else is different for me. There'll be tons of stuff I'll fondly remember, which include:
* Hong Kong protests
* Trump impeachment inquiry
* The Christchurch shootings
* The Opportunity Rover being declared dead
* Notre Dame fire
* Sri Lanka bombings
* El Paso/Dayton/West Texas shootings
* First ever image of a black hole
* Epstein's mysterious death
* The massive force of Disney+
* Heightened awareness and protests of climate change
* No-deal Brexit battle

And I still stand by my hope for the Yankees to be defeated this year; they've already won way more pennants (and World Series titles) than everyone else. And if they do get to the World Series this year, I root for whichever NL team gets in (hopefully not the Braves).

Thankfully, both teams got defeated prior to the World Series!

This year will be remembered for the Washington Nationals winning it all! They became the first team to win the World Series their first time in it since the 2002 Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim).

At least with 2019, its tragedies spread out throughout the year. But 2020, in only 4 months, had so many tragedies jam-packed into it. If the pandemic persists throughout most of the year and pop culture continues to slow down, then 2020 will be remembered as a terrible year.

I was thinking with the music, while doesn't make up for the difficult times, at least there's plenty of good music to listen to while we're in quarantine. However in the future looking back, we might not want to listen to the music of now as we tend to associate music with memories of events and experiences.

Music's a form of escapism, so I think people will appreciate the songs from this year regardless of what happened. I enjoy lots of songs from 2001 despite 9/11 occurring from that year (it's a tie between "Chop Suey!" or "Family Affair" for me).

Well, I have bad news: the virus is more resilient and contagious than previously thought and we'll probably see many more waves of it.

2020 is pretty much cancelled at this point, and we can only wait on 2021 to save us with that vaccine and end this hellish year's life.

Usually epidemics (like the flu) subside when people are less confined in closed spaces thus less in contact with eachother, usually in the summer, which makes the chances on contagions significantly drop. Not only that, but people who are contaminated usually show very quickly symptoms which make them stay at home, which lowers the chances of passing the virus pretty much null.

COVID on the other hand is a nasty combo of being very contagious (twice the R0 of the flu) + symptoms taking days sometimes even a week to show + a high rate of infection.

I dunno, I just don't have high hopes unless every human on earth obey on the strict hygiene rules because a virus won't vanish on its own. A vaccine is pretty much our only rescue.

It helps treat the coronavirus (like an assistance rather than a cure), but health experts are still divided about the effectiveness of the drug towards it. It isn't even recommmended by the CDC (as of yet).

Chloroquine and other antivirals only help the body fight against the virus by making them more vulnerable or slow their progression, they don't cure the way an antibiotic would on bacteria. Viruses are very fickle and difficult things to treat by medicine. Usually it's all up to the immune system of the patient, which worsen with age and certain diseases.

Here is my list of what I think 2019 is remembered for. Even that year is a blur since it was before the pandemic and the last "normal" year, and just happened to be the last year of the 2010's.

Music: Lil Nas X, Lizzo, Billie Eilish, "Talk" by Khalid, City Girls, "Hot Girl Summer"
Movies: Avengers - Endgame, Spider-Man - Far From Home, Lion King remake, Joker
TV: Mandelorian (Disney+ in general)
TikTok, White Claw, Popeye's vs. Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich wars
The Trump Impeachment (first one)
Greta Thunberg and the climate change protests
Hong Kong protests
Mass shootings and violent video games get blamed
AOC (her first year in office as the youngest female ever in Congress)

I recently listened to my 2019 hits playlist & was shocked at how dated some songs already sound compared to the new stuff coming out. There were still a few EDM hits for goodness sake! The majority was stuff that still sounds like it could be new though (trap). 2019 is definitely gonna be remembered as the "normal" year before 2020. Politically though things were already kinda going downhill but it was far from being in the forefront of our lives.
