Subject: Next Generation Starts in 2020?

Written By: Slim95 on 01/26/19 at 1:25 pm

If we go by the 18 year rule, the next generation after Z (Gen Alpha) is supposed to born in 2020. If Gen Y is 1982 - 2000, Gen Z 2001 - 2019, then the next generation must be 2020 - 2038. This probably means Gen Z culture officially dominates Gen Y in 2020 as well.

Gen A I guess, but I'm not positive. The generational scholars haven't fully agreed to the names and letter yet.

People can't make up their damn minds when it comes to the cutoff dates of Gen X, Millenials and especially Gen Z, so you can guess that trying to impose cutoff dates on newborn/unborn yet people is more than ridiculous.

"Generation Y" is the Millennial generation. The "Generation Y" moniker was just a placeholder. It doesn't mean anything, though some people use Generation Y and Millennial interchangeably. "Generation Z" was basically a placeholder as well, but nobody has yet come up with a name for that bunch that has stuck. "Generation X" on the other hand, is an actual generational identifier. It was the generation after the Boomers, and when it first started to be noticed as an actual generational bloc it was like "who are these people who are now emerging after such an IDENTIFIABLE generation (the Boomers), what are they about, these 'x' people?" (I recall all this as it happened), and it basically became their identifier rather than a placeholder. "X" has a meaning that 'Y" and "Z" don't. Got it?

Yeah I'm speaking rougly. I know things always get ugly when we put official cutoff dates so I am just saying around 2020. Perhaps a bit earlier and perhaps a bit later.

Actually anyone born in 2013 and later is part of the newer generation. Some scholars are cutting off the end birth year for Gen Z earlier than that. I call the new generation AA. One defining factor of the new generation is having Trump as the first president in their memory.

Doesn't make much sense. Gen Z is not that short and the next generation doesn't even have a proper name yet. The babies that are born now are late Gen Z still. Generations don't go away quick they take time, Gen Z is no different. I'd say the 18-20 year rule I posted makes sense and fits with everything I've read online. The "Alpha" name isn't even official. Typically another rule is we need to wait until the oldest people of the prior generation start to have kids. Most Gen Zrs do not have kids yet... Heck most are still in high school right now. The oldest have just started going to university.

What difference can you tell in the upbringing of of 6 and 7 year olds? This whole generation stuff is bunk. "Scholars"

Also, anecdotal, but when I asked my 2005 born sister in 2016 whether she liked Obama, she asked "the girl on the Disney Channel?" ;D "First president in their memory" is a subjective experience.

Gen X is only about 15 years, unless you start it in the early 1960s. Pew research has 1997 as the start of Z and I imagine some of them are having kids already.

I do agree with Slowpoke though that generations are pretty meaningless.

Actually the first of Gen Z were born in 1997, and a generation spans approximately 16 years. The first birth year for Millenials is 1981. That is why 2013 is estimated as the first birth year for the newer generation.

a generation spans approximately 16 years.

Not for baby boomers though, since they span 1946 to 1964 when, you know, the baby boom was happening.

Actually the next generation starts in early 2010s. The Pew Research dates on generations, those are the ones I see in a lot of recent articles nowadays, and I feel those may be the "finalized" dates used by most people from now on. Maybe.

I don't know how the next generation could have possibly started when most people don't even know Gen Z exists and associated all young people as millennials. Generations take time.

Anyways I will lock this topic at risk of getting into decadeology territory.
