Subject: 2009-2010 was weird.

Written By: mc98 on 04/22/19 at 10:28 am

Does anyone have this feeling that the period between August 2009 - May 2010 felt weird? I was in 5th grade in this time and I could feel the transition from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. You see newcomers like Kesha, Drake, Jason Derulo, Bruno Mars, and Justin Bieber entering the spotlight. Lady Gaga’s Fame Monster sounds different from her debut album from 2008, it felt more like in the 2010s territory. I heard songs Sexy Chick and Memories by David Guetta  and both sounded like a proto-2010s EDM songs. There were some flip phones in this time but I also saw smartphones, mostly Blackberries and some iPhones. It was the first full Obama year as well. Does anyone else feel this way?

I loved that era and still consider it to be the best time of my life.  I went to Lady Gaga's Monster Ball concert in September of 2010.  I still believe that was her best album.

At this point in my life I'd love to go back to May 2010 and get a complete do-over from that point in time.  This decade has overall sucked.

The vibe back then was just completely different from today. Things were way more bright and optimistic.

Not at all. Thing were very depressing, the recession caused many people to lose their jobs and the swine flu caused many to be hospitalized and some even got killed. It was a depressing time. I don't see 2009 - 2010 as bright at all.

I was in grade 9, my last year of junior high school. I don't think it was weird really. We were solidly in the 2010s, no transition or anything. Obama was president, Lady Gaga was popular, social media was huge, etc. I remember the recession was a big news topic. 2008 on the other hand was when the real transition was.

I remember it being a lot more optimistic than today, even with the bad economy. It’s hard to explain why.

Anyway, I think this transition talk is rather asinine personally. It’s obviously subjective because nobody agrees on it. We can all broadly agree that 2010s culture started pretty early but the exact time period of the transition is always going to be debated. People still don’t even agree on when Y2K culture started.

Another thing I want to point out is that Facebook was more popular than MySpace in this period. Another reason why the 2000s were dying at this time.

The electropop era will always be the best part of the 2010s. 2008-2012. Period.

The mid 2010s are pretty fun too, but not not as good as 2008-2012. For the late 2010s (Late 2018-present), well, let's just say it's awful.

Well, I do. You have all the record breaking shootings, bombings, killings, riots, etc from the mid/late 2010s. Then you had the election and music became much slower and darker. 09-10 was optimistic and bright compared to the rest of this decade.

Yeah, i agree. But let's be honest here, not every era is perfect, the 2008-2012 recession was very effective, as well as the suicide of Amanda Todd, 2011 Japanese Tsunami, etc. Every era has their own pros and cons.

The year 2009 was extremely transitional, most notably in gaming. AAA gaming and especially the hack 'n' slash, WoW-style RPG are still the big thing, but this is also the beginning of smaller, indie developers gaining the spotlight through platforms like Steam. It set the tone for this whole decade, with very innovative titles by small players.

I would agree with this.  I think AAA gaming has been much worse this decade than it was in the 2000s.  There have been a few great AAA games in my opinion but for the most part, it's been just old ideas recycled on a better graphics engine.  What has been great about this decade is indie development.  It's also led to the return of many genres that had previously died out, like platformers and adventure games.  I still prefer the '00s for gaming and that is when I consider to be my gaming prime, but there's a lot to like about this decade.  The indie game explosion also revived the PC as a gaming platform.  If people remember, in the late 2000s it really looked like PC gaming was dying.  Increasingly, AAA titles were developed for consoles first and the PC versions were becoming more and more rushed.  It got to the point where it wasn't worth upgrading your hardware for gaming like it once was.  I was glad to see the PC revived by Steam and indie developers and that eventually led to AAA developers taking it seriously again.

I agree, but we have good AAA games this decade like GTA 5, Witcher 3, Rise & Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Destiny, AC Origins, PUBG, etc.

2009 from my perspective felt strange in a sense that it didn't feel like the 2000's nor the 2010's.  It either felt like it's own standalone year or a beta for the 2010's.

- Social Media was around and gaining popularity, but it still felt more like a novelty.  It wasn't until the 2010's that I started to see family members, teachers, major brands, and celebrities start using social media.
- Smartphones were also around, but also felt like a novelty.  iPhone was only out for a couple years and was only on AT&T.  Android was barely out yet as well.  People were still saying they would never need an iPhone.
- Youtube quality was still kinda amateurish, but at the time had a bit of a following, like AVGN.
- It was the last year alternative rock and emo were popular, and the first year auto-tune pop really started to take off.
- One thing that really comes to mind that makes this year strange, was that this was the first (and only) year The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien was on the air.  This was a big deal for some people because this was supposed to represent the beginning of a new era.  The "younger" generation now has the reins to one of the most iconic TV shows ever.  And by early next year, all that bullsheesh with him and Leno happened and it was just gone.

2009 felt like the dawm of the 10s especially the latter half of the decade with Smartphones increasingly becoming common, Obama being in office, MJ dying, Skinny Jeans being fully-accepted, swag culture, the rise of Drake. 2009 is similar to 1999 where's both years lean heavily towards the next decade but still had things from there preservice decade. One thing that made 09 very 00s is that Myspace was still widely used that year.

Yeah but people act like 2009 was fully 2010s when it actually was pretty 2000s as well. Psp, Fliphones,  Cable tv, MySpace, Baggy Jeans were still pretty dominant in that year. It was YouTube last full-year it had the 5-star rating system, Ringtone rap was on its last legs with songs like Hallie Berry, Ricky Bobby, Stanky leg, swag and surf and Ice Cream Paint Job. The Wii was at its peak with NSMB Wii and Wii Sports Resort. The second half of 09 leaned more 2010s when Drake and Nikki Minaj came on the scene but early 2009 definitely felt more 2000s.

Everyone has different opinions but 2009 feels much more 2000s now especially with it being a decade ago.  The fact people still used fliphones regularly, DVD players were still the main source of watching movies, the iPod nano was the most common music playing device and Guitar Hero still being the fad game shows the 2009 wasn't all that different from 2007 and 08.

I guess it wasn't drastically different than 2007 and 2008 but it sure is totally different from anything pre-2006 which I consider the real 2000s anyways.

The majority of 2009 isn't really different from 2007 and 2008, but it certainly felt different from 2006 and before. Late 2009 is when the early 2010s is in it's prototype stage.

That's how i feel too, at the time you could really feel things were changing, but looking back now 2009 still looked very 00s comparing to let's say 2012.
For me 2011 is the first year that feels predominantly 10s, and 2010 feels 50/50

Mid 2008 was when things started changing with recession, electropop(which was considerably different from early 10s electropop mind you), etc and that until summer 2009 was a transition period from late 00s to early 10s. You still had plenty of songs in the late part of 08 and early 09 which wouldnt fit in too well in the early 10s like miss independant, my life would suck without you, live your life, boom boom pow etc.

Summer of 09 was when it truly set in and was almost indistinguishable from the early 10s. Although there were still some crumbs from the 00s left over like black eyed peas, nelly furtado, timberland etc until mid 2010. You also had Justin Bieber, Drake, Kesha and other prominent 10s artists get popular in the second half of 09.

2008 was the common "big era" all the way up until 2020 when Covid hit. Now we are in a new "big era" that started in 2020 and is no longer part of the 2008 - 2019 "big era". I call it a big era because obviously you can divide it into smaller parts, but you need to look at the big picture. Perhaps only those who are over 23 can see it.

Kinda like 1989-2000, the post Cold War and Pre 9/11 world ? Although it’s just easier saying the 90s which is what Most people call these “big eras”

Yeah I guess it makes sense, but that just sounds another way of saying the 2010s without saying it. Most people would call that the 2010s

I felt that lage 2005 to 2008 was very transitional with the decline in McBling hip-hop and more dance pop that became more electro each year, as well as autotune based R&B. Also TV shows like The Office and HIMYM as opposed to the Reality TV craze that dominated the first half of the 2000s. This reminded me of the 1989-1992 period despite that time being numerically on the fence between 2 decades, which is why people think 2009 and 2010 was transitional even though it was more of an established and finalized culture.

I think we all agree 2009 was the real first year of the 2010's culture wise. However there were still some last breaths of 2000's energy in there

The second half of the year was. First half felt like a transition from the late 00s to early 10s.

2009 was the year I enrolled and attended Cosmetology(Beauty)School.

I remember our instructor giving us hair assignments, and chatting with us. We were allowed to play music, and everyday it was either "Poker Face" or "Boom Boom Pow" as we did our assignments on our mannequin heads. Lol. Fun memories!  :)
