Subject: What defined the 2018-2019 school year?

Written By: mc98 on 07/21/19 at 10:51 am

As we're heading towards 2019-2020, how would you describe this year (Aug 2018 - Jun 2019) culturally? High school is definitely taken over by core Gen Z'ers. TikTok became the new Vine. Ariana Grande ruled this year with "thank u, next" and "7 Rings". Trap rap like Sicko Mode, Zeze, Mo Bomba, and Old Town Road were huge this year. You also saw peak popularity of current artists such as:

Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
Happier by Marshmello
Without Me by Halsey
Sunflower by Post Malone
Talk by Khalid

There was a comeback of 2000s artists such as Panic! At The Disco with "High Hopes", Lady Gaga with "Shallow", and Jonas Brothers with "Sucker". Avengers Endgame was the biggest movie this year, if not the entire decade and also all-time. I saw many airpods this year at my college,  I thought 2017-2018 was peak late 2010s but this year will be viewed as peak late 2010s looking back. How would you describe this year culturully?

“Captain Marvel”?

“The Big Bang Theory” going off the air?

Ed Sheeran performing “I Don’t Care” with Justin Bieber

Don't know, I graduated in 2018 so I don't know what happened. I do think that it was the last school year of the late 2010s or that will be associated with the late 2010s. The 2019-2020 school year, on the other hand, will be very different and will overshadow what happened in 2018-2019.

Hopefully, there will be some changes in the 2019-2020 school year to get rid of the predominantly late 2010s vibe we've been living in since the second half of the 2016-2017 school year.

It was arguably the most boring school year of the entire decade. Nothing defined it. It will definitely be forgotten in the future.

Compared to the other years of the decade, I think that it was needed. We hadn't had a calm year for a couple of years now ;D.

I guess the benefit was there wasn't as many terrorist attacks as prior years, though there were still a handful of mass shootings.
