Up until a year ago there was a BK about 100 feet from my office building. I worked in that building for roughly 3 years. I only grabbed a burger from BK maybe 3 times. Otherwise I went over there for a Frozen Coke, if the machine was working (which most of the time, it wasn’t). Place was a real suck-o-rama.  8-P

We have a joint here in Picksburgh called Eat ‘n’ Park. Not exactly “fast food” but pretty close, and they have a decent menu.

Way back when, they used to be a Big Boy franchisee. Instead of the Big Boy Sandwich, they offer the Superburger, :P which is basically the same thing.

The Big Boy sandwich pre-dated the Big Mac by like 40 years.  ;D

There are three McDonalds in the town where I live and they all seem pretty busy. The one in the main town square has a bit of a bad reputation as a place where yobs hang around (inside and out).  This week around 20 or so had banning orders preventing them from visiting the restaurant

My fast food of choice is either Subway or a local Mexican place called Plan Burrito

I think McDonald’s will always be the most popular fast food joint. If all fast food closed down, they would be the last one to do so.

So far we have a BK, Arby’s, and Big Boy that have closed for good. Big Boy had problems staying open last summer because of lack of workers. Dennys had the same problem.

Many in the north part of the state are now open with measures in place. Like 50% or less capacity, tables spaced apart and away from main walkways, masks required unless you are seated.

The governor finally gave us northerners some reprieve since through all of this, the confirmed cases for northern counties have only been about 1 per week, with a few more like 1 a day.

We are living through a time of great upheaval. Things long ingrained in our culture are being toppled. Be it statues, institutions or long entrenched beliefs. Things are being swept away. I would like to see McDonalds and their unhealthy, sick-making, smelly food be among them. The only thing I would be sorry about is people losing their jobs. But surely, nobody plans to stay  in "McJobs" for the long term anyway.

America would look like what it looked like 30 or so years ago. The American obesity epidemic (yes, that's what the CDC called it in 1999) basically started in the 1990s and has been growing ever since. Take a look at a picture from the Woodstock festival in 1969 for example. Half a million people in various states of undress and you see very, very few overweight people. Compare that to a more recent photo of a large gathering, say at a country music festival or large sporting event. You will see a large number of overweight people.

When I was couchsurfing and commuting 50 miles back and forth to work every day a few months back (long story) I'd hit up a 24 hour McDonald's on the way back to my sister's house because I work late and they were open 24 hours. I think their quality has improved quite a bit over the last several years.

I actually went to high school with a guy whose dad was an animal science professor at the University of Nebraska and who invented the process that allowed McDonald's to create the McRib.

Among other things. It boils down to too much food and too little exercise.

Read this:

www.publichealth.org/public-awareness/obesity/

Some pertinent excerpts:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the average American ate almost 20% more calories in the year 2000 than they did in 1983, thanks, in part, to a boom in meat consumption. Today, each American puts away an average of 195lbs of meat every year, compared to just 138lbs in the 1950's. Consumption of added fats also shot up by around two thirds over the same period, and grain consumption rose 45% since 1970.

Research published by the World Health Organization found that a rise in fast food sales correlated to a rise in body mass index, and Americans are notorious for their fast-food consumption ― such food makes up about 11% of the average American diet. Another study demonstrates the full effect added sugars from soda and energy drinks are wreaking havoc on American waistlines. So it is not just how much we eat, but what we eat.

Lack of exercise is also a major culprit in the obesity epidemic. It's been decades since most Americans worked in fields and on factory floors, a far greater majority of us are sitting throughout our workday. This means less exercise each day. According to one study, only 20% of today's jobs require at least moderate physical activity, as opposed to 50% of jobs in 1960. Other research suggests Americans burn 120 to 140 fewer calories a day than they did 50 years ago. Add this to the higher amount of calories we are packing in, and we get a perfect recipe for weight gain.

But lethargy goes well beyond the workplace. It is also how we get to work and what we do after. Americans walk less than people in any other industrialized country, preferring to sit in cars to get around. And at the end of the day, 80% of Americans don't get enough exercise, according to the CDC.

I'd rather be skinny than be obese, all my life from the times that I always weighed myself I've been less than 200 pounds between 150-170 pounds or less than that and I've learned to burn it off right after.

Me too. I’m 150 and feel freaking obese even though I can still wear my high school clothes. All through high school and until my kid was born I was 120 and felt better. I did get to 125 the winter after my last surgery. Lately I’ve been thinking about getting a used weight machine for the basement and maybe I could look a little better. But I’m most attracted to gals around 2x my weight, go figure.

I do eat a lot of junk food because it’s easiest for my body to handle. From stores not restaurants. Rarely do I go for fast food or restaurants, it’s too expensive and out of my way. But I don’t eat a lot of food in general. Go to a restaurant and I’m best with just a little side dish or two. A McDonald’s meal I can never eat in one sitting. Sometimes my body doesn’t want food for days and eating anything makes me feel yucky. I can go days or even a week without eating and still not be lightheaded or even hungry. I just eat because I know I’m supposed to.

Further to VotS post, two things I noticed when we lived in the States is the surprising range of food that had sugar (corn syrup, etc) in them that you wouldn’t find added in other countries. For example,  I started making my own coleslaw because what ever brand I bought, including from the deli, it would taste revoltingly sweet.

Another thing is car use. There were large neighbourhoods where you had to drive places because there were no sidewalks to walk on.

You weighed 120 in high school? Isn't that  little low for a male? Might I ask how tall you are? You must have been like one of those impossibly skinny kids with a size 26 waist I used to see in local heavy metal bands. They were always so skinny in those bands.

We were regarded as strange because we would park downtown and walk between the various shopping centres. I would see people drive to park in front of each shop in the same strip mall.

Yeah, American food is sickeningly sweet to most Brits.

Yes and at least when I was feeling good I ate like a horse. 5’8” tall. 29 waist. Haha yes I did play in bands back then in the 90s and had tons of energy. I weighed that until I was 24 and my kid was in the oven, then somehow I put on the weight instead of the wife. I shot up to 150. I felt huge and lethargic.

As time went on I ballooned out to a 32 waist. But after my 2018 intestinal surgery I dropped back to the 29 waist. I had bought a bunch of 32 pants but they feel huge and fall off even with a belt.

And I think just as soon as I got older closing in on 50 years of age I tend to eat a lot of junk food myself, sometimes with going to Burger King in the morning before work I'd buy hash browns and a cuppa coffee then I'd make my own lunch then maybe dinner I'd buy those spicy nuggets and a taco.

My dad was 5’6” or 5’7” and skinny like I was in high school. Then when I was in my teens he got up to 140 with a 32 inch waist. My mom constantly called him fat and told him to lose weight and even bought him a weight bench which he never used. Eventually she left him for someone more fit. So that’s where my perception comes from. She was a beanpole and to this day doesn’t look like she has gained a pound.

When I got bigger my face showed it too and my dad said it looked like my face was swelled and I got beat up. That made me go on a crash diet. He often criticizes me for being attracted to curvy partners. Yeah lots of fat shaming where I grew up. Well it stops with me. My kid’s mom is a shamer too but I taught my kid to be accepting of all.

But yeah we were talking about McDonalds. To me the healthiness isn’t much of a factor. I can eat reasonably or totally make myself sick with huge portions of junk just the same at a fast food joint as I can at the grocery store. Actually at the store I can get more junk for my money so in a way that could be unhealthier.

Depends on your height really. A 32” waist at 5’6 might be a bit overweight.

The rule is to stay under half your height. So someone who is 5'6" (66 inches) tall should have a waist under 33 inches. This works for centimetres too. This is a better measurement for overweight/obesity than using your weight, if you have a lot of muscle mass.

I’m 5’11 and have a 30” waist - I got up to a 34” waist before but thought I looked a bit too chubby. I never worked out back then so I had virtually no muscle definition.

I used to be skinny, I was between 125-140lbs and then I gained some weight probably right after High School but I've been able to weigh myself lately and I've never been over 200lbs which is a good thing. I eat a big breakfast, a somewhat light lunch then a big dinner at our around 6pm.

I think I'm 32-33" right now at 5'8" and it does look a bit chubby, at least it's the chubbiest I've ever been. I was 29-30" before I started weight lifting and I ate too much calories on a bulk phase. The worst part is since this pandemic started, I've lost 7 pounds, but it's almost all in muscle. My stomach hasn't budged.  :-[

McDonald’s may be the only one left eventually. All of our Burger Kings are closing because the one who owns all the franchises doesn’t want to do the renovations required now the 20 year lease is up. Arby’s has cut their hours down to nothing and is now only open while I’m at work. Wendy’s is supposedly filing for bankruptcy.

Yes it's popular, extremely popular because of Mcafe especially. There is no Chic-Fil-A here in Canada. I heard it's popular down in the states though. Up here, McDonalds and Tim Hortons are the popular go-to fast food restaurants. But McDonalds is actually becoming more popular up here than Tim Hortons because the quality of the coffee is a lot better than Tims and for the same price, it's a no brainer. I think Tim Hortons went downhill when Burger King bought them. They really need to change their coffee and make it taste better. I always go to McDonalds for the coffee, it has the best fast food coffee for sure.

To expand the marketability of the product. Having a sandwich with bacon, beef, and cheese excludes kosher adherents from enjoying the product. Maybe if they used that meat substitute product for the bacon and beef patties they could make it kosher.  And tasty.  :P

I like McDonalds, but they got rid of Ronald McDonald to make way for that Minion looking box sometime in the mid 2010s, and I even haven't seen him around in a while.

Foreign countries like Japan still use Ronald, and he's still in the PlayPlaces. But he isn't in the ads anymore.

Apparently the franchisees have to pay $18,000 to buy one, and they are only allowed to have the manufacturer maintain/fix them.

McDonald's has been a "only if I'm craving it" type of burger fast food place for me, I'll admit, they've got their breakfast down, no-other fast food place comes near them, in my honest opinion. The fries are pretty banger too, especially when piping hot and fresh out the fryer. Pretty popular, it's a familiar place everyone knows and has their favorite items and it's a quick bite to eat.

One time the camera itself wouldn’t even fit. They tried fixing it last year but it failed because the scar tissue is too tough. The only way to fix it right is to do an esophagectomy, which in my case has a 50% chance of failure, leaving me on a feeding tube the rest of my life. So I’d rather just nibble on dry junk food, it keeps me going and I can otherwise live normally.

I do miss the flavor of McDonald’s burgers. Back in the 90s a buddy told me they were made of part beef and part edible plastic. Might account for the unique flavor but I don’t mind if it’s true as plastic is nontoxic.

I imagine you’d have to do that with one of the plant-based “meat” products. That would take care of the problem  that pork is not kosher. Also since it’s not really “meat” then there’s no problem slapping a slice of cheese on top of it in a McRib Egg McMuffin. 😋

I wish that McDonalds would bring back their Angus Third Pounder premium sandwich offering. The stores would promote the delicious sandwich with a sign out front saying ‘Try our Angus Third Pounder”.  8)

It was hilarious when vandals would remove the “g” and the “third” letters from the sign.  ;D

Speaking of Teriyaki, I recall once we were in a Japanese chain restaurant, not in the UK. Because of dietary reasons we asked a waitress what are the ingredients of Teriyaki Sauce, she goes and asks the chef in the kitchen, and comes back saying, he does not know, it just comes in a bottle. So we walked straight out!

Apparently McDonald’s is not popular with some people.

Some lady attacked a Mickey D counter worker, for refusing to mix flavors in her slushie.  But then got beat down by one of the workers.    :o

Another article recounts…

“ With a cup in hand, Cleveland proceeded to walk to the restaurant’s soft drink machine, where she partially made a beverage for herself before heading back behind counter in hopes of reaching the slushie machine, the clip shows.

But the devoted employee wasn’t having it, cutting off Cleveland and taking her to the floor, where she repeatedly pummeled the do-it-yourself patron in the face while saying, “Don’t f–king hit me, biatch!””

There’s at least one poll that would say that McD’s is not so popular.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2021/07/06/chick-fil-voted-top-fast-food-place-mcdonalds-ranked-last/7878731002/

”Despite being the best-rated fast-food joint, Chick-fil-a dropped from its score of 84 in 2020. Here are the top five rankings:

  Chick-fil-A: 83
  Domino’s: 80
  KFC: 79
  Starbucks: 79
  Five Guys: 78

As for worst-rated fast-food chains, McDonald's claimed that lowest spot with a score of 70. Jack in the Box, Popeyes, Sonic and Wendy's scored 73. The average score of limited-service restaurants was 78. Subway had the biggest drop in this year's rankings, from 79 to 75. “

In my town all we have is a McDonald’s and Subway. Used to have Little Caesers, Taco Bell, KFC, BK. So McDonald’s is definitely popular.

In the next town it’s popular too. KFC and Starbucks are the only competitors from the list. They closed and tore down the Dominos like almost 20 years ago. So I’ve never been to one.

I haven’t been to most of these. Next town has a Wendy’s and nothing wrong with it. I was at a Sonic back in 2017, in the Nebraska panhandle. The food itself was fine but the service and even the quality of the building was horrid.

Never heard of a runza. Looked it up and it’s very similar to a pasty. The signature food of upper Michigan.

It was in Sidney. The Cabelas headquarters could be seen down the road. We were just passing thru and on a time crunch, broke and extremely sleep deprived as well. 3 adult sized girls in the backseat of a Nissan Versa for 4400 miles. That trip pretty much was the kick in the bucket for me and my housemate.

Except that this BK was paying its staff $10/hr and the store managers $12/hr.

I might go to Burger King once every 2 or 3 years, and that's only because either I'm on a road trip and there are no other options close by, or I had just forgotten how crappy it is, and I always end up being mad at myself for going there.

I liked Whoppers back in the day, but the last few times I ordered one at BK it was just a bunch of hot slop on a soggy bun. On the other hand, it seems as though McDonald's has made great leaps forward in their quality control, and although I don't eat much fast food anymore I have no qualms about going to Mickey D's. The last few times I went to McDonald's I was impressed at how well made and tasty the Big Macs and Quarter Pounders have become.

Good point, didn’t look into it that close. Lots of places here starting at $14-$18, but go about 30 miles and it’s $10.50. Food wise, I’ve never had a problem with either one.

Most of the BKs here closed anyway. One guy owns them all and didn’t want to do the required renovations to renew the lease. This was over a year ago, well before lumber prices went crazy.

I always thought that Whoppers were way too sloppy. It takes three hand to handle a Whopper. Two to hold the dripping mess and another to grab the napkin.

Model D a year or two ago went to all-fresh beef for their Quarter Pounder (it is called The Royals in France) and it indeed was a tasty upgrade. 😋

That would be me. My friends and I have been calling it Booger King since we were kids.  ;D

When I was in the Army 30 years ago I was stationed in Germany, and all the PX's (post exchanges, which were basically shopping centers ran by the government for the military) had Burger Kings exclusively. If you wanted to grab a bite to eat and you didn't want to eat crappy Army chow, then BK was basically your only option if you were on or near an Army base.

The BK's in Germany were absolutely horrible. I almost missed out on going to my first convoy to Berlin (which was one of the greatest experiences of my entire life) because I had a Whopper the night before and I got food poisoning from it. Thankfully I recovered by the next morning and I was able to go.

After I got discharged and returned home I absolutely refused to go to Booger King for at least 2 or 3 years afterwards.

I don't know, there's just something about Booger King that makes it so easy to hate.

I think it all started for me with those stupid commercials they made back in the 70's to try to compete with Ronald McDonald.

But I knew where he was coming from when we had pancakes once. They tasted like cardboard. How do you screw that up when you just add water to the mix? Did she not take it out of the box first?

I don’t eat at any restaurants anymore. Because of my medical condition. But if I had to choose I do like McDonald’s better than most. I could probably eat a hash brown or fries but that’s about it.

Also one reason I would choose McDonald’s over BK is McDonald’s still has plain honey for the nuggets. BK only has honey mustard which to me is nasty.

You get 100 points for every dollar spent at Mickey D’s. And you get an extra 1500 bonus points the first time you make a purchase using the rewards app.  8)

Most of ours ripped out the playlands years ago. Local word is some kid got molested in ours so they tore it out. Maybe, but it takes a lot of energy to heat and cool that big glass room, resources to clean and maintain it, and I would imagine the insurance is higher too.

The one in Reed City is still there to my knowledge. At least as of a few years ago. They remodeled it and kept the playland. I took my daughter there countless times on our travels back and forth. We were usually the only ones there on Friday nights. One time a kid had lost a toy pony behind the gated area, at some point earlier. So I pulled one piece of mat and put 8 straws together and nudged it until I got it for my daughter.

I loved to get the little toys that were in the Happy Meals. I even saved a handful of the ones I got between 1989 and 1991.

I also remember the play areas that some of them have. Of course, they've been remodeled over the years, but I often enjoyed going down the tubular slide when I was little. Sometimes I was the only one using it.

McDonald's didn't get ball pits until I was in my teens and too old to go in them, but I remembered wishing they had them when I was a little kid.

Now, after hearing how gross they were, I'm glad they didn't.  ;D

I think McD’s did not think out the whole app thing very well.

If you’re in the drive-thru lane, it slows everything down. The guy in the car in front of you fumbles with his cell phone trying to interact with the loyalty app. Slowing down the drive thru process is a huge problem.

Those Quarter Pounders were so messy sometimes, they just slop all the onions, pickles and condiments onto the bun that the majority of them slip out from the other side and then it gets hard to hold while the sandwich is falling out your hands.

McDonald's is still popular in Canada but in the past few years more and more people have complained that the prices are becoming too high. Their coffee is surprisingly decent for fast food coffee so it's one of the top preferred coffee chains, a lot of people go there just for their morning coffee.

I go there just for coffee. It's a hit or miss but I find it is much better than Tim Hortons, which is the competing coffee chain here in Canada.
