Also on that day, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay threw the second no-hitter in MLB postseason history. He allowed only one Reds batter to reach base, and that was on a walk.

(It was the first postseason no-hitter in 54 years. The only other one was Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.)

October 27th 2010, the World Series began at AT&T Park (now Oracle Park) in San Francisco. It was the first time that the National League had home field advantage since 2001, due to an All-Star Game rule that was implemented in 2003. The San Francisco Giants defeated the Texas Rangers (a team making its World Series debut) by a score of 11-7.

This was also the first time that a team that won the National League West division title reached the World Series since the Arizona Diamondbacks did so exactly 9 years earlier, in 2001. (The 2002 Giants and the 2007 Rockies were both wildcard winners.)

November 1st 2010: In MLB, the Giants finally won a World Series for the first time as the San Francisco Giants. They defeated the Texas Rangers in Game Five to capture the title. Veteran shortstop Edgar Renteria was named series MVP. (Coincidentally, 13 years earlier he knocked in the series-winning single for the Miami Marlins to capture the 1997 World Series title. And in 2004 he was the final batter of the World Series again, this time for the St. Louis Cardinals as he grounded out to Boston pitcher Keith Foulke to end Game 4, giving Boston a sweep. But in 2010 with the Giants, he made key contributions that earned him the WS MVP honors.)

Personally, I don't like that format. Day before month, when written numerically, confuses me (therefore I would tend to read that as November 1st). In fact, in many cases I have utilized the YYYY-MM-DD format, especially for naming document files.

Not to worry though, in 10 months we will see the 10th anniversary of 11/11/11!

August 28th, 2011-Tropical Storm Irene devastated our little state of Vermont.

These were pics I took shortly after:

This one was taken almost a year later:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51408597108_8ec0f8e9a0.jpg

The local media is having a "10 Years Later" bit and the stories pretty much have the same theme: Community. I read in this morning's paper about a couple who bought a farm in 2010 and their first growing season was 2011-that got wiped out by Irene. As they were thinking about moving and giving up on farming, there was a knock on the door and a stranger handed them a jar of coins and said, "Rebuild." So they did. Neighbors came together for neighbors.

There is a wonderful quote by Calvin Coolidge (who was from Vermont) that he said after a major flood in 1927:

I love Vermont because of her hills and valleys, her scenery and invigorating climate, but most of all, because of her indomitable people. They are a race of pioneers who have almost beggared themselves to serve others. If the spirit of liberty should vanish in other parts of the union and support of our institutions should languish, it could all be replenished from the generous store held by the people of this brave little state of Vermont.

(The bold is my emphasis. It is the part that I REALLY love.)

If was after Irene that we adopted the motto: VERMONT STRONG!

October 27th 2011, Game Six of the World Series was played. (It was supposed to be played the previous day, but it was postponed due to inclement weather.) In the 9th inning of that game, the Rangers were one strike away from capturing their first title in franchise history, but David Freese hit a game-tying extra base hit which ultimately forced extra innings. In the top of the 10th, the Rangers scored a pair of runs to go up 9-7, and in the bottom of the 10th they were again one strike away from winning...but Lance Berkman of the Cardinals knocked in the tying run, and ultimately forced an 11th inning. The Rangers failed to score in the top of the 11th, but in the bottom of the inning, Freese once again stepped up to the plate, and this time he hit a solo walkoff home run, thus making a Game Seven necessary the following night.

Joe Buck, who was calling the game on television, said "We'll see you...tomorrow night!" when said home run was hit.

10 years ago today, we lost Carlos' dad & my dad. Yes, ON THE SAME DAY!!!!  :\'( :\'( :\'(  I was supposed to go down to be with my dad in D.C. the day after my birthday because he wasn't doing well (pancreatic cancer) and one of my sisters was there by herself. The day before we went (on my birthday), his dad ended up in the hospital here. We couldn't leave so my sister in Oklahoma took my place to be with our dad so my other sister wouldn't be there alone.

Here, his dad went into "comfort care" and we were basically on death watch. 11 days later, he finally crossed over.  :\'( :\'( :\'( That evening, all of Carlos' kids (well the ones who live here in Vermont) came and made us dinner as we got ready for our trip to D.C. which would take place the next day. My sister kept calling me telling me that Dad was not doing well. She put the phone to his ear and I told him that I was coming the next day and to hang on. About 10 minutes after that phone call, the phone rang again and I said, "uh oh." I knew. Yup, it was my sister telling me that he also crossed over.  :\'( :\'( :\'( We still went down to D.C. the next day. All my sibs were there and we closed up Dad's house.
