Subject: When will the 2020's form its own identity?

Written By: thisismelemon on 01/01/20 at 9:40 am

Happy New Year and New Decade everyone  :D
Today is the first day of 2020 and the 2020's decade.
How long do you think it will take for this new decade to form its own identity

I feel like 2020's culture will actually start to develop sometime in 2021.

Maybe in late 2020 as well?

2021 at the earliest.

2001 was noticeably different from 1999, at least musically speaking. And 2011 was even more electropop than 2009.

Maybe in a couple months if we're lucky. But more likely 2021.

Please let's not go there again... Don't compare it to the 2000s which started early/on-time and did not have ANY '90s culture part of it when it started. 2000 was not '90s in any way, shape, or form, period. It was different from 1998. 1998 was the last true '90s year. The 2000s started early, in 1999, or around late 1998 to be specific. The Y2K era is part of 2000s culture, not 1990s culture.

The same case happened with the 2010s, it started early... In late 2008 is when 2010s culture began.

This is not the case for the 2020s obviously. It still feels like the 2010s. So the 2020s culture may start later, like in 2021. This is similar to what happened in the 1990s, where 1980s culture still was around until 1991. But this is not the same or similar to what happened with the 2000s. Most people here know I hate when people say that lol.

The 2010s is just a long a** decade, we need to accept that lol.

I think it already has, but it will only be obvious to people later. 2019 had a lot of new trends, and 2020 is only going to build on that. The good thing is that's it's a new decade now so people can't say "I saw a dude with pigtails back in 2017 so it's a 2010s trend not 2020s" (not that I ever saw a dude with pigtails, but to give an example of people denying obvious new trends).

I don't agree that it has personally. Even some core 2010s elements haven't fully gone away such as trap music.

Right now it's way too early to form an identity.

2000 was very late '90s, the change from the '90s to the '00s was extremely gradual but 1999 and 2000 was the epitome of late 1990s trends, it was the peak of teen pop and boybands.

I can forsee years down the road from now we will be on here debating whether the shift occurred in late 2020 or 2021.

I think The 2020's needs to be it's own identity and be a different decade.

No it was not. It was 2000s. 90s culture died in 1998.

I agree. January 2020 feels the exact same as December 2019 of course, but it has a different vibe from most of the 2010s. Things just look and feel different now.

I can't agree besides the fact we are actually in 2020 now and mentally we can feel things are different because we are in a different decade. But in reality everything is the same.

The only thing that is different really is that EDM isn't mainstream anymore (but trap still is).

I have a feeling we’re gonna look back on 2020 as the year that was 2010’s in everything but name alone. I think the second half of this decade will be very different.

I'm gonna predict that these early months of 2020 are gonna feel like an extension of the late 2010s.

*TikTok's still gonna be thing
*The "nobody:" memes will still be commonplace (I grew tired of them already)
*Trap and Synth/dancepop will still be the most popular music genres
*Hostile political discourse
*Streaming will continue to dominate the TV landscape

True with me now, I tend to watch television on Catch-Up now.

Nowadays it can be frightening to speak to a stranger.

Yesterday I said good afternoon to a stranger walking by staring at me (who was a teen) and he just looked at me in fright and kept walking. I’m still very social (despite having social anxiety). My therapist has given me great tips on how to confidently regain my social skills that I lost as a teenager when I had low self esteem :(. Even when I’m in a taxi or uber I try to spark conversation and it always ends in dead silence. Kinda weird. I didn’t grow up like that.

Really? I can't get Lyft drivers to shut up ;D

I do notice that teens and younger Millennials are less likely to say hi/good morning on the streets or the bus stop though. It's extra awkward when you see them everyday too.

Also, nowadays, women do not expect men to open the door for them, on many occasions some women are surprised to see me do it for them.

I'm a young millennial, and I will always say hi especially if the person says hi to me. I would never ignore them that's so rude. People these days...

It's not that they don't say hi back, it's that they don't say hi in the first place. Like, they'll keep their headphones on or look down/away.

2010 from 2025 is 15 years apart

Maybe 2021 if the pandemic subsides around the world and we become a different society afterwards (like how life changed after 9/11), but that's just a guess.
