Subject: 1995 vs 2005 vs 2015. 10 to 20 years apart, what has changed ?

Written By: CarCar on 02/08/20 at 12:18 pm

1995, 2005 and 2015 best reflect the culture and core of each of they’re respective decades due to being in the middle of they’re decades. People who lived all three years or remember and can list all the trends of each year can you list them and give a perfect picture of how different they are from one another

Pictures are welcome

I wasn't alive in 1995, so that's out of the picture. ;D

Personally, I was 5 in 2005, so I couldn't really remember anything except for a couple shows I've watched like Go, Diego, Go! or Blue's Clues. But here are some of the trends from that year.

- YouTube was founded that year, but didn't experience widespread popularity until 2006.

- Myspace became the most popular social networking site.

- The most watched TV show in the U.S. was American Idol (for the first time ever). Other popular TV shows included Desperate Housewives, Lost, 24, House, Grey's Anatomy, and CSI.

- Crunk, snap, gangsta rap, pop punk, and R&B were the most popular music genres at the time.

- Most people owned Nokia bar/flip phones.

- Emo, boho-chic, skinny jeans, crop tops, and cargo pants were amongst the fashion trends.

- The major sixth-gen consoles (PS2, GC, Xbox) were still on the market (until Xbox 360 was released in November)

Here's a picture of a group of teenagers from that time:

I remember 2015 quite well. I liked a lot of pop music from that period, I enjoyed games like Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, Vine was still huge, and the Star Wars series came back with tons of hype.

- Tropical house and trap were some of the most popular music genres.

- Eighth generation video game consoles were in full swing (except for the Wii U :\'()

- Video streaming services like Netflix became more popular with original shows like Narcos, which came out that year.

- Instagram and Snapchat were exceeding in popularity and they were/still are the most used social media apps by teenagers.

- Most phones people used were/still are iPhones or Samsung smartphones.

- Fashion was inspired by grunge (with flannel shirts and ripped pants) and monochromatic colors overtook neons in clothing.

1995

Lots of alternative fashion
Not many people had Internet, if they did it had slow dialup modems
Not many people had cell phones. If they did it was the large flip phones with the long antennas
Discmans and CD's
Disposable cameras
VHS for movies
PS1 debuted that year, but it was mainly still the 16-bit era in gaming (Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis)
End of the grunge era and gansta rap, and alternative rock was big
Friends on TV

2005

Boho-chic fashion
Many had desktops or laptops, beginning of Web 2.0 and social media (mainly MySpace)
Mostly flip phones and Blackberrys
iPods or another mp3 prayer (Zune, Sony Walkman)
Digital cameras
DVD's for movies
Xbox 360 debuted that year, but still the PS2 and Gamecube era
End of the glam rap era, beginning of the emo era
Premier of The Office

2015

Fashion? Maybe the end of hipster. I really don't keep up anymore. I notice a lot of "athleisure", such as yoga pants
Mainly tablets and many do not need laptops, and certainly not desktops. More social media platforms.
Smartphones
Smartphones play music as well, no need for a separate device
Smartphones take pics as well, no need for a separate device. Selfie culture.
Digital movies, but Blu-ray still common.
PS4 and XBox One, and the failure that was the Wii U
Mid 10's trap
Not sure what TV was popular in 2015. Only shows I remember that premiered were "The Crazy Ex-girlfriend" and "F is For Family". A lot of streaming on Netflix and Hulu.

Technically there is no year in a decade that's right in the middle. Because 0 to 4 is 5 years and 6 to 9 is 4 years... Which means the 6th year isn't the middle. The 5th year (the year ending with '4) isn't the middle either. The literal middle of the decade is the instant the clock turns to midnight from year 5 (the year ending with '4) to year '6 (the year ending in '5).

This means the middle of the decade is a group of years (year 4 to year 7 but May to September of those respective years to be exact).

I hope that makes sense.  ;D

I was just born in 1995 so I can't help you with that. But 2005 and 2015 have quite a lot of differences. People were more edgy back then and "cool" in 2005 while in 2015 it's cool to be "uncool" and in to be a hipster geek. The culture is similar today as it was in 2015. I'll make the bet that there won't be a lot of differences between 2025 and 2015 because culture is much more slowly changing now than it was before. Everything is gradual and slow in terms of change compared to the 2000s and 20th century decades. People just don't want change anymore I guess.

I don’t get the point in you trying to correct me but okay, XXX3 to XXX6 is the middle years I could have said XXX and it wouldn’t have changed much, all the years I mentioned are 10 years apart and in the middle of they’re respective decades representing the core. Also no one can see the future, so I doubt that entirely tbh

I think technology has come a long way over the past 25 years.

It is all down to Moore's Law.
