Subject: Music of 2010: Closer to 2007 or 2013?

Written By: Rainbowz on 03/02/20 at 5:57 pm

I personally feel as though 2010 music has more in common with 2013 music. Drake had hit songs in both of those years, as well as other artists like Katy Perry and Bruno Mars.

2013

There was still some electropop in 2013. 2007 was dominated by snap rap, post-grunge, emo pop punk, Timbaland productions, and Contemporary R&B. A big far cry from 2010 if you ask me.

Yeah, 2007 was still pretty core 2000's. Both 2010 and 2013 had some electropop in it, which is why I believe 2010 was more like 2013 when it comes to music.

It’s hard to say, I feel like a song released in 2007 wouldnt feel that out of place in 2010 and I feel like a song released in 2013 wouldn’t feel that out of place in 2010 either. As a whole I went with 2007 mainly because it was the year electro pop started creeping up.

There was more electropop in 2013 than in 2007 though.

Electropop wasn’t the only genre of 2010  ???

I'm going for 2013, even though in 2013, there was a slow, but transitional shift in pop culture at the time. Electropop was on its way out, but there were still songs I remembered that were hits like "Scream and Shout" and "Applause" that derived from the electropop genre.  Alt-pop (or sad pop, as I like to call it) was first popularized by Lana Del Rey with her album Born to Die, but it further gained popularity by Lorde with her song "Royals" becoming a global hit.

EDM wasn't really a thing back in 2010 as electropop and other electronic-sounding pop was still dominant.

Music in 2010 overall definitely has more in common with 2013 music than 2007. This isn't even up for debate. The strong electro beats & electro background in music that was heavy in 2010 was heavy in 2013 as well. You didn't have much of that with a lot of 2007 music. 2007 was still in the core 00's era of music with a lot of hardcore emo/rock/punk music and hip hop music was still in that weird snap/crunk era.

Wow, looks like there's an equally divided response on which year sounds closer.

But it's still 2013 for me.

It was by far the most dominating tho.

If you look at the charts, there are some ballads and rap singles here and there, but it's unquestionably a full-on domination by electropop.

Both the 2007 and 2013 charts were much more diverse in comparison, but electropop singles were still lingering about in the first half of 2013, making it the closest to 2010.

There was hardly any electropop creeping up in 2007 tho. All that Timbaland-influenced synthy R&B and hip hop of 2007 is quite different from the distortion-heavy, EDM-influenced, reverbed electropop with buzzing synths of the early 2010s.

The closest I can think of 2007 electropop that wouldn't feel out place in the early 2010s would be some of the European stuff that predicted the sound:

^This for example predicted Ke$ha 2 years before her breakout

Wow, even Uffie (the singer)'s cadence was similar to Ke$ha's. Apparently, I've read that it was a coincidence that she sounded like Uffie in "TiK ToK" and other songs of hers. Also, if Uffie would've came out with her Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans album two years earlier from Ke$ha's Animal album in 2009, she probably would've been a superstar. I've read an article about it: https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/6897e3/how-uffie-should-have-changed-pop-music
