Subject: The Swagged Out 2010s or Hype Beast 2010s

Written By: oldmusicfan on 03/07/20 at 5:17 pm

Which part of the 2010s did you love? The Swagged Out 2010s (early to mid 2010s) or The Hype Beast 2010s (mid to late 2010s)?

What were your favorite clothing brands, music, shows, movies, online videos, social media pages, and websites from the swag era?

I was a 6-8 years old during that time so I wasnt that much into clothing brands, but I always liked the neon style with neon accents put in black sweaters and hats. With shows, I was into Phineas & Ferb, Adventure Time, and Spongebob, and I liked movies like POTC:OST, Despicable Me, Kick Ass, Karate Kid, Mission Impossible, etc. On my Windows 7 PC (THE MEMORIES, AHH!), I'd always visit Facebook and play the games there like YoVille, FarmVille, Fish World, Ameba Pico, etc... Not very popular, but I wanted to mention it nonetheless. For music, oh boy I could go with this for HOURS, but LMFAO, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Usher, and Chris Brown were my favourites.

I meant swag related pop culture.

You mean like dubstep?

I love the early 2010s but I didn't go out of my way to be "swag" ;D

Have you ever listened to Drake, Lil B, Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, Shawty Lo, and Riff Raff? What did you think about President Barack Obama’s swag? Did you watch
Swag Inc. on BET this past year? Have you seen the teen documentary Swagger? What about the short silent film SWAG from 2014?

Personally, hearing the word "swag" was so  annoying.  >:( Glad it died out.

No, I wasn't into any of those things except Drake. I do remember in my orientation week for university in late 2011 that the bag that was handed out to every freshman which included essentials such as... condoms, was called the "swag pack" ;D

What do you make of the hype beast era that started in the mid to late 2010s?

I'm not a fan of "hypebeast" or Supreme clothing; they're too tacky for me.

I enjoyed Netflix shows that came out during this time, like Stranger Things, BoJack Horseman, and Big Mouth.

I was a fan of Soundcloud rap (when I was 15-18), but I grew out of it and now I find it to be immature.

Never liked the increased political polarization we had pre and post-2016 election.

After 2017 (when the Galaxy S8 and iPhone X came out), smartphone reveals became more expensive and less exciting.

I laughed at a lot of memes.

So, you were not a fan of the 2010s in general?

I liked the 2010s, especially the early-middle portion of the decade. There are some good and bad things to be had about every decade. But when most people reflect on the 2010s positively in the future, I think they would gravitate towards the early or mid 2010s. Late 2010s (2017-2019), though? I'm not so sure.

How were the late 2010s to you?

Early 2010s pop culture sucked it was really embarrassing and corny in my opinion.

They were alright. I supported Trump (but not as avid now), but the increased political polarization was a turn off to me (and obviously many others).

Evolving internet memes pretty much saved the era for not being total dogsh*t to me.

I enjoyed music streaming like Spotify and watched shows on Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ on the tail end of 2019.

The only year from the late 2010s that I actually liked was 2019 (and it was actually my graduation year). Movies were great (Joker, Parasite, Endgame, etc.), I liked a lot of music on the charts (Circles, when's the party's over, Panini, etc.), and the only games that came to my attention was Kingdom Hearts 3, Borderlands 3, Death Stranding, Astral Chain (haven't really looked into it), but they were quite well-received games.
