Subject: 2014 appreciation thread

Written By: Dundee on 03/16/20 at 3:48 pm

I used to be one of the biggest haters of that particular year on this forum but 2020 is currently really putting stuff into perceptive...

So as an apology thread towards it let's celebrate this extremely goofy of a year.

2014 (and 2012 and 2018) are my favourite years of the 2010s.

Year started off ultra-positive with everyone dancing to Happy

Canada kicked ass in the Sochi Winter Olympics, and the 2014 World Cup was a lot of fun to watch too, especially the final :o

It was one of Katy Perry's biggest years, a lot of good indie music, the fashion was damn fine (probably the best we have seen in the last 50 years), and it is my favourite year in movies (Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, Boyhood etc.)

And the end of that year with North Korea hacking Sony over The Interview was LOL

I enjoyed 2014, for with my love of cinema, I had an unlimited cinema pass, on which pay for one month (it was a year contract), and it is as described viewing unlimited films for the month, even if it is the same film on the next screening.

2014 is actually the year when my mom died due to liver disease. So I didn't enjoy the year as much as anyone else. :\'(

But besides the heartbreak, I liked some trends from this year. The ALS Ice Bucket challenge (which unfortunately spawned an offshoot just called the Ice Bucket Challenge for no cause), I loved songs like "Happy", "Boom Clap", and "Love Runs Out". Frozen and especially the song "Let It Go" was EVERYWHERE.

Vine continued its dominance, but I didn't really follow it until early 2015.

Yeah, there really isn't anything else that I can remember from that year, except seeing more people with smartphones.

I'm glad you joined the club ;). I've genuinely missed 2014 since 2017 or so. If I can just go back to pre-2015....

I really enjoyed 2014, it felt BRAND NEW and clean. Minimalist Pop, Early Trap music, Pop Trap, Hipsters, 8th-Gen consoles, Vine, and more!  :D

This is really growing to be one of my favorite songs of the 2010s. Those lyrics are so damn relevant now...

Also, look at how cool that video is! It literally screams 2014.

2014 is a year that I feel like I took for granted. It really wasn’t as bad as I thought, especially when it comes to music and my personal life. The only thing that actually sucked was that my grandfather died, and I didn’t choose to spend the last time with him, which is probably one of my biggest regrets. But spring and summer 2014 was honestly chill.

Looks like we both lost someone that we knew and loved that year.

Other than that, 2014 was pretty good for everything else. I forgot to mention the phenomenon of Flappy Bird as well.  ;D

Thank you for making an appreciation thread for 2014. Too many people bash on that year but it was the third best year of the decade pop-culture wise in my opinion. It was also the first full mid 2010s year and when things started to really feel different. "Dated" is a strong word to use for 2014 but I will say it's pretty distant. Also the funny thing is while 2014 was going on I thought it was a boring, bland, and bad year but looking back I see how it was a lot better than many other years in the decade. I feel the same way for 2016 as well.

I get what you mean in that it felt "new and clean". 2013 was a unique year and it was transitional in that we saw many mid '10s things come but we still weren't completely sure what the new era will feel like. But when 2014 hit we knew what the new era was and that we were finally in the mid 2010s. The mid 2010s only lasted around 2 years though (2014 and 2015) and it was just a small transitional era to the late 2010s. But I think the mid 2010s were definitely the best era of the decade by far.

Ahh I see. For me, things really went downhill around 2018 when everyone became depressed and pessimistic  >:(

I find it hilarious how some of y'all are appreciating 2014 now when only a couple years ago on this forum y'all were trashing, thrashing, and bashing the year heavily with everything the pop culture offered for the year, but I always loved 2014. It was my senior year and I loved the pop cultural atmosphere throughout the time. Amazing how you're missing it now, but when I first joined this forum 5 years ago, I already appreciated 2014 heavily. I've been reminiscing that year since New Years 2015 hit lol.
