Subject: Songs on the cusp of mid 2010s and late 2010s.

Written By: mc98 on 06/18/20 at 12:55 pm

Inspired by the other thread, I want to list some songs that feel like they are in the cusp of mid and late 2010s.

This is a dancehall inspired track but it has lowkey vocals.

This song has that funky groove that was popular in the mid 2010s but has that "echoey" sounds throughout the song

Here's a song that's on the cusp of the early 2010s and late 2010s, weird as that seems.

The chintzy horns, motivational lyrics, electropop feel, lensflare and skyscraper imagery, etc. makes it feel like a 2011 song, not a 2018 song. Funny enough, it apparently was made around 2011 and languished in the vaults for years.

I'm not sure about "Shape Of You" being on the cusp. That song sounds firmly late 2010's IMO.

What do you guys think about "Despacito"?

This one's a toughie because the mid-2010s were essentially one big transitional era towards the late 2010s, musically at least. But I'll bite:

Kind of a mid-road between trap and DJ Mustard. Even features those Mustard "Hey" chants that were most common in the mid-2010s:

^Although released all the way back in 2013, this song was notorious for introducing the triplet flow into trap music which had become the golden standard of songwriting by the late 2010s.

I guess but it's a generic reggaeton song, and only by virtue that reggaeton in the early 2010s had bright synths, faster rhythms and things like kuduro influences so it could have only been made in either the mid or the late 2010s.

You could say that lots of DJ Snake/Dancehall songs from Mid 2015 to Early 2019 are on the cusp

Lean On sounds super mid 2010s.

It's another DJ Mustard-produced song, but I feel like it's a cusp with trap basslines and electro-R&B instrumentation.

Also, I'd like to point out that lots of songs from twenty one pilots sound very Mid-2010s because of how upbeat they sound, although the dark messages is what puts it in the cusp.

Ride (2016) is a good example, while it sounds like a motivational Mid-2010s rock song, it has dark lyrics which lots of Late 2010s songs are known for.
