Subject: The late 2010's (2017-2019) were quiet

Written By: batfan2005 on 07/07/20 at 2:14 pm

I've mentioned this in other threads, but I thought I'd start its own thread about how 2017-2019 were relatively quiet with a lot of chill vibes. Of course no need to even talk about 2020 since we all know how that's going, but remember how 2016 was. I think of 2016 as 2020 without the pandemic, but it had a lot as far as civil unrest and skyrocketing crime rates from the Ferguson Effect since 2014. 2015 also had a lot of tensions and terrorist attacks like in Paris or the Charleston church shootings, and also Trump's campaign caused a lot tensions on its own. 2017-2019 did have isolated incidents of mass shootings though like Charlottesville VA, Las Vegas, Parkland FL, Dayton OH, etc. but overall I feel like it was the calm before the storm years.

More like 2018-2019 I'd say. 2017 still had the tense feel of 2014-2016, to me. But yes, I agree. Late 2018-2019 felt weirdly calm.

Nah, late 2010’s weren’t really that calm, to be honest. Only 2019 felt like a calm year. The 2018-2019 school year felt like the calm before the storm. It was oddly very chill events-wise compared to 2017-2018. The economy was still doing great and unemployment was at an all time low. It did feel like the world was improving a bit in 2019. Too bad it’s the exact opposite.

2017 was fairly dark in the UK, we had two major terror attacks that year.

2018 and 2019 were better though.

2016 and 2017 were very heated. I think by 2018 we were just too emotionally exhausted to care much anymore. 2019 had some tension with the climate change protests and Hong Kong protests, but still not too wild. I think by 2018 and 2019 the shock of everything wore off. And then of course, this year sh*t hit the fan. I think the only reason 2018 and 2019 seem so calm is because we are comparing those years to 2016, 2017, and 2020. They weren’t really all that calm. The early 2010s were much calmer than any of the years in the late 2010s. To get a good replay of all of the years I like to go back and watch the Google Year in Review videos. Both the 2016 and 2017 videos had apocalyptic vibes. 2018 and 2019 videos were more optimistic. In terms of pop culture, however, I do agree the vibe has been super chill.

Edit: here are the year in review vids for 2016 - 2019

Late 2010’s were dark, cynical and depressing compared to the early/mid part of the decade. Music videos became less vibrant in the late 2010’s.

2018 and 2019 were relatively quiet in terms of the reactionary climate brought on by things like Brexit and Trump's election win. Most people were content on Trump being president, despite praise and opposition towards him. 2018 had the zero tolerance immigration policy debacle, historic midterms, and the US-North Korea Deal while 2019 had the government shutdown, Climate Change protests, and Trump being impeached.

2017 had a lot of tension, especially with  events like Trump's inauguration, travel ban, Charlottesville, the Manchester bombing, and others.

In terms of music, the general tone was rather dark, downbeat, minimalist, and chill with trap being the main popular genre for the youth (and still is today).

Early and mid 2018 weren't quiet at all. That was the peak of school shootings, March For Our Lives, it was when kids became more afraid of going to school because of school shooters. Hell, my school even made a new rule right after Parkland happened to not line up at the door when class is about to end. It was very divisive.

Now, late 2018 was when it got a lot more calm. And the entire year of 2019 was a break from 2017 and the first half of 2018.

It seems lately the election years are the crazy ones, particularly 2020 and 2016. And look who the common denominator is in those two elections. It makes those conspiracy theories believable that he is behind some of the craziness.

I don't think it was quiet. I think 2018 was really bad though it was a dark and depressing year and quite dark. 2017 felt like a normal 2010s year... and 2019 was good it kickstarted the transition in music at least.

I thought 2018 was the best year out of the last 5 years (since 2015) for me personally. It just had a happier and laid-back vibe and had some nice memories. I also liked the culture/music of that year, and it had some good movies as well.
