Subject: Things everyone thinks are 2000s but are really 2010s

Written By: CarCar on 09/02/20 at 3:44 pm

What are somethings that people associate with the 2000s but actually way more of a 2010s thing overall.

The electropop era. Despite starting in late 2008 / early 2009, its peak was undeniably in the early 2010's. Late 2006 - Early 2008 was still pre-electropop, and had more in common musically with the mid-2000's than the early 2010's.

LGBT rights increased way more in the 2010s than the 2000s imo. Also top-bottom text memes and rage comics are more early 2010s.

There was way more societal change between 2010 and 2019 vs. 2000 and 2009. IMO this is one aspect where the 2010’s are easily more changeful than the 2000’s.

Yup. Christian and other religious fundamentalists still had power in the 2000s, and same sex marriage was only a thing in a handful of countries (Netherlands, Canada, Spain, some others I don't remember).

Many social networks, even some that started in the 2000s. Reddit and YouTube began in the 2000s but the former had a really shady reputation, while the latter a far better but now likely forgotten reputation among its users (much like MySpace, deviantArt and Tumblr). These days Reddit is known for general discourse after having cleaned up their act, and YouTube, thanks to Google in part, has fallen into either:
The internet equivalent of Fox News (edgy stuff always existed, but became weaponized on the platform at least in part due to surrounding political events and the increased attention YouTube had gained by this point).
A place to shill VPNs, other streaming platforms, men's care products etc., just like freaking Instagram.
Tumblr could also be argued to be more 2010s (which I'm sad to say) than 2000s, even though it existed in 2007. Tumblr was largely unknown before like 2011 or so.

The number one thing I've noticed are social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Most people associate these with the 2000s. These sites have existed in the 2000s and were popular, but they were more 2010s things and they peaked in the 2010s. Besides, culturally speaking we already entered the 2010s by late 2008.

There are many more examples though. I think too many people forget the true identity of the 2000s which was the early 2000s. Sadly many people call it an extension of the 1990s which it most definitely wasn't and associate things from the late 2000s as "2000s". But the core identity of 2000s culture is found in early 2000s trends.

I would say the advent of high-definition television. HD quality existed back in the 2000s, but it wasn't as mainstream until the 2010s.

Yeah, I agree. HDTV started to emerge then (my household even got its first HD television set in 2008, with the wider aspect ratio), but not everything new was being filmed in the HD aspect ratio back then. For example, certain TV programmes and ads weren't being filmed that way just yet; it wasn't until the early 10s when they all were.

IPhones, I didn't know anyone who had an iPhone until 2010/11 even though they ushered in the modern era of cellphones.
