Subject: What years would you consider cultural shift years of the 2010s?

Written By: NightmareFarm on 04/21/21 at 1:06 pm

Early-Mid: 2013. 2013 was definitely a cultural shift year since you had electro pop go out of style with indie pop and slow pop being ushered in, Vine took off, Instagram took off, Snapchat took off, Youtube merged with google+, the last remnants of 00s influence like skateboarding being popular(at least from what I saw), emo/swirl haircuts, old style youtube videos, etc gone and replaced with the new. Windows 8 and Ipads also started getting popular. Breaking Bad ends its final season. Dragon Ball is revived with battle of gods. Gaming wise, the 8th gen begins with the launch of the PS4 and Xbox one as well as the Wii U getting its first wave of games. "The last of us" releases which influences many games in the 8th gen with its cinematic approach to game design. Pokemon Gen 6 began which revolutionised the series. Minecraft hits its peak in popularity. GTA V releases and shatters sales records, becoming the fastest selling game of all time. Super Smash Bros 4 is revealed. Final Fantasy XV is revealed. Kingdom Hearts 3 is revealed. DmC releases and kills off the Devil May Cry franchise until E3 2018 where a sixth game would be announced. Politics wise, Obama was inaugurated for his second term at the beginning of the year. BLM is founded. Feminism picks up a lot of traction.

Mid-Late: I'd say 2016 is the cultural shift year of the second half of the 10s. Because all the political stuff that happened that year with trump becoming president, brexit, sadiq khan elected mayor of london, alt right/conservatives uniting under the banner of trump and slamming SJWs left, right and center which set the precedent for the political scene in the late 10s. Also memes changing to resemble what we know today, post irony satire humor becoming commonplace, cringe culture at its peak with channels like leafy, pyrocynical, etc hitting their peak, youtube videos becoming a lot more "modern" and "professional". You also had streaming explode in popularity. I remember around the time 2016 began "netflix and chill" becoming a popular meme. The switch gets revealed too if that counts although it doesn't release until the following year. Not much to say about music since it doesn't change much from 2014 until 2018 where mumble rap/trap is everywhere. There are some new production elements used in songs that started this year which is synonymous with the mid-late 10s pop music. Lots of celebrity deaths.

I agree with 2013. I actually felt 2017 having more of a shift than 2016. Imo, 2016 was like a continuation of 2015 with Trump's campaign and rise to presidency, as well as the rise of the alt-right and SJW. 2017 was when Trump took office and really started to change things. Latin pop became popular and Cardi B/Migos started dominating trap. But overall the shift from mid to late was much less noticeable and much more gradual compared to the shift from early to mid, despite having a new president.

If you consider 2016 as the cultural shift year then that would be the year where changes happen before the new era. Like Trump getting elected and brexit. The new era starting in 2017 make sense to me since that's exactly when Trump took office, the switch released and then you have all those other changes like post irony humor and political warfare from 2016 which set the precedent for 2017-2019.

But I agree, the mid-late shift is kind of vague and hard to pinpoint compared to other cultural shifts like 2013 or 2008. It's mostly due to politics and internet culture.

The biggest shift year in the 2010s was undoubtedly 2013. I still remember looking back how different things felt in late 2013 compared to early 2013. You still have stuff around today that originated in 2013 such as Selfies, Instagram, Hashtags, identity politics, etc. (not all of these originated in 2013 but they became popular around that time). It's just the vibe felt completely different once 2013 was ending.

Definitely. 2013 killed off pretty much all 00s influence and was a precursor to the culture of the rest of the decade.

Mostly agreed except I think 2010 is the transition from late 00s to early 10s. I'm aware a year of the previous decade can start the culture of a following decade but I have my reasons(Smartphones starting to become commonplace for example).

Well the 2000s were long gone in 2013. The 2000s ended in 2008/2009. And any leftovers of the late 2000s (which I don't even consider true 2000s anyway) were long gone by 2011.

Nah, there was still a bit of 00s culture left over in 2011 and 2012 like emo haircuts, old style youtube videos(AMVs being extremely popular for example, notepad tutorials), skateboarding being popular, heavy usage of text emotes like XD. And 2008 and 2009 were late 00s. No one except super rich people had smartphones back then whereas they exploded in popularity in 2010/2011.

Not fully early 10s. Smartphones were anything but mainstream back then but instantly sold like hotcakes in 2010/2011 and they are arguably the most revolutionary tech in the 21st century.

Its just that I think of 2010-2012 as the Core Early 2010s, 2014-2015 the Core Mid 2010s, and 2017-2019 the Core Late 2010s.

2009 seemed more transitional than 2010, being an extension of the Late 2000s in the first half and Early 2010s in the second half, whereas 2010 just gives off full Early 2010s vibes.
