Subject: Neumorphism

Written By: Early2010sGuy on 07/23/20 at 7:49 pm

Neumorphism is a new form of graphic design in websites that combines Minimalism and Skeumorphism, with flat icons being distinguished from the background thanks to some shadowing techniques and bevels. Fun fact, to some extent, it even takes inspiration from the Y2K aesthetic as shown in the new PS5 controller, but what do you guys think?

In my opinion, I think its a smart direction for art and web design. It could remind us of the past, which could be the Y2K Era or even the Early 2010s while still having that modern feel.  :D

I'm loving the aesthetic. The mixture of gradients, cleanliness, and flat shapes looks really appealing and I hope it becomes more popular with companies around the world.  :D

I even found a neomorphism CSS color generator to play with: https://neumorphism.io/#5c85ff

It is kinda nice - the thing with skeuomorphic graphic design is that I found it elitist since one needed to be good at art. I like flat design but it does present some accessibility issues (i.e. not knowing which UI elements are even buttons in the first place).
The design language itself also looks more clearly futuristic because, well, we don't really have tech that changes shape in a very organic manner.

The design is bad along with the flat UI. I really enjoy skeuomorphism though. It's not even just the nostalgia factor I really personally think that design is very nice and futuristic even though it looks dated today. The iOS icons were never as good as they were before IOS 7 for example. Today's design looks like it's from the 80s, very flat, even the new concept. But I know this is subjective. It's just my humble opinion.

Ahh I see 🤔 I just grew up with the flat aesthetic which is why I never got tired of seeing it, but there are some things that we never get tired of, speaking of which, what is your favourite type of aesthetic/UI?

I like(d) skeuomorphism but it looked like one needed an art degree to even design those icons and the other countless UI elements. An effective UI comes down to how well one can organize information, really, and IDK if computer programmers could create something like an internet icon that actually looks like the planet Earth as opposed to an abstract representation of it. It's at least uncommon for a computer programmer to have good art skills too.
