Subject: 80s, 90s nostalgia in 2020

Written By: violet_shy on 10/15/20 at 11:05 pm

I can definitely understand why there is all this nostalgia and people bringing back fads from previous decades. I mean, this year has been quite a stressful year with so much negativity going on in the world. This horrible pandemic taking people's lives so quickly...it's traumatic for me and maybe for others as well. I think 2020 is the year of nostalgia.

I find that people want to relive happier times and bring back fads like music and fashion from their happier days. And even people who weren't around during the 90s or 80s...or before. I'm all for it! If it makes people happy during such dark times, then it's more than a good thing.

I just hope the 2020s will develope it's own identity in the years to come because we do need to see changes in our culture. I know the 80s were a fun time but 2022 can be as well with new innovations and fads that define it.

The way people just wholesale plagiarize 90s fashion shocks me. I get flashacks of childhood memories I didn't even know I had when I walk down the street these days. ;D

I know the 2010s were accused of copying the 90s, but other than plaid patterns and jean jackets (which were a 70s revival in the 90s anyway) there wasn't really much else. Things like skinny jeans, yoga pants, Uggs, stylized beards, manbuns etc. are uniquely 2010s. I'm sure you could find someone from 1983 or whenever who fits that description, but those things will be identified with the 2010s in the end.

With 2020, you could seriously play a game of  "1998 or 2020?" and other than face masks (and white tennis shoes) I think it would be challenging. Kids these days dress identically to how me and my friends, cousins, younger aunts and uncles etc. dressed circa 1998-2000, the resemblance is uncanny.

It reminds me of the real life version of the movie "Ready Player One" where people were living in a virtual world and listening to mostly 1980's music, because their reality was very dystopian. It was a good movie, btw. There's even 2000's nostalgia as even that decade was much better looking back. I think 2020 would have been a fun year if it hadn't been for the pandemic and more remembered for its own unique style in addition to being retro.

Uggs was actually 2000's. I remember them becoming popular in the Mid-00's in MySpace pics.

I also don't mind the onslaught of nostalgia from decades past in a crappy year like this. "Blinding Lights" is my favorite song of 2020, and it's an 80s synthpop throwback.

I enjoy listening to it as well. It's a beautiful throwback...it sounds very 80s.  :)

Charlie Puth also loves his throwback vibes for 2020!

The track definitely has that George Benson "On Broadway" hook.

It does! And this is off topic, but I just love Charlie Puth!

Me too! He's the only current artist that I've added to my itunes in the last 2 years lol. I also love "Attention" and "How Long"... but that's also off topic lol.

I enjoy the nostalgia in 2020 as well. '80s nostalgia is really big still on its third wave.

I remember in the late 2000s/early 2010s people used to say that we dressed to alike to people in the 80s with all the shutter glasses and neon colors

It seems like the pendulum today is about bringing back the early 2000s aesthetic. Y2K is in full swing now for inspired fashion sets

I guess people are just always experimenting with fashions of recent past decades nowadays. You can see on Instagram or the street outfits from the 90s, 80s, 70s and 2000s all in the same place.

I guess it takes a while for things to have they’re own identity or at least form one

The 1980s aren’t a recent decade that was 20 or 15 years ago anymore. It’s in it’s more mature phase like the 60s was in the 2000s when it was turning 40.

The 80s are on they’re way to become the new 50s/60s.

Just curious when were the first and second waves? I remember a wave in the early to mid 00's and even as early as the late 90's, but was that the first or second, and when was the other one?

The waves never really ended. People never stopped getting nostalgic for the 1980s. It was almost a continueous thing. Even in 2020 we still got an '80s throwback.

Just sayin.

It's the 1960s and 1970s for me.
Albeit  recently I have begun to have nostalgia for the 1980s, a decent chunk of the music was still good in the 80s (at least until the mid 80s before a significant drop off) , and some television sitcoms in the 80s were also decent.
I seriously doubt I will ever have any nostalgia for anything 1990s since there was nothing in pop culture/films/music then I particularly enjoyed.

I'm feeling more Mid-2000's than early, especially with the music samples and aesthetics.

The best one was a song that came out in September of 2020 by French DJ David Guetta and Australian singer Sia called Let's Love.  It is 100% an homage to the 80s including the music video and even the single cover!  This made it to #9 on the US Dance chart and ranked #79 on the year end dance chart of 2020, which is quite an achievement considering the song was only released in September

Is it really though?

Of all the decades you have lived through, what does this era remind you of the most?

I honestly don't know about that. I mean from what I've heard from other people, the late 1990s early 2000s was when fashion was at peak baggy. I mean the chicks my age and younger (98 to 2003, and 2003 to 2007) definitely have that mid and late 90s vibe to them, especially with the pants (mom jeans/ wide leg baggy pants, and now even flares), white striped socks with white shoes (Airforce ones, adidas super stars, stan smiths), and hairstyles (Long hair with blonde high lights and middle parts). But the dudes on the other hand, still wear joggers and skinny jeans, except for me lol. Not to mention those god awful ankle crops and fugly chunky shoes. The hairstyles have gotten longer, and I see way more middle parts and shaggy hairstyles for younger guys. For people in middle and high school the undercut/fade is still there, but dying out fast. Especially considering that the pandemic meant the barbershops were all closed and you either had to keep your hair growing or cut it at home. High maintenance hairstyles like the fade/undercut would require constant product application and styling. As well as trims every 2 weeks or so. Personally, I'd put it more at 1995/1996 if you ask me.

The crop tops combined with the baggy jeans look for women is very 1998, although back then the jeans would have been low-rise.

For dudes the curtain hair, chain necklace, graphic tees with baggy jeans look is also very 1998. We're not at frosted tips yet though thankfully.

Not everyone dresses like that, but some people do bring back memories I didn't know I had. I guess this was in in 1995/1996 too but I don't really remember those years.

I remember when fashion gave off '80s vibes in the late '00s and early '10s, with shutter shades, rubber bracelets, neon colors, off-the-shoulder tops, and leggings coming back into style.  ::)
