Subject: Heathrow Airport during the pandemic

Written By: Philip Eno on 10/28/20 at 9:06 am

Heathrow says it has been overtaken as Europe's busiest airport for the first time by Paris Charles de Gaulle because of a slump in demand for air travel. Some 19 million passengers used Heathrow in the first nine months of the year, versus 19.3 million who used the airport in the French capital. Heathrow said Amsterdam Schiphol and Frankfurt were "close behind". It said all three rivals had adopted testing regimes as a way of people reducing or avoiding quarantine.

Subject: Heathrow opens dedicated facility for red list passengers at Terminal 3

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/06/21 at 4:01 pm

Heathrow has opened a dedicated terminal for passengers on direct flights from red list countries, following concerns that they were mixing with those from green and amber nations.

Travellers on direct flights from red list destinations will now go through Terminal 3, although a dedicated facility for processing such travellers is eventually planned for Terminal 4.

Sky News understands that the government is covering the cost of operating the terminal, but a final sum has yet to be agreed.

The cost of operating a terminal varies depending on its size, but usually requires around £2.5m to £5m per month.

It comes after airport staff raised fears for their safety because of overcrowding, amid concerns that travellers arriving from red list countries were mixing with those from green and amber.

I would guess less COVID and more Brexit. Leaving the continent will not be good for trade and travel.

Subject: Self-isolating staff cause 'total chaos' at Heathrow Airport

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/13/21 at 5:24 am

Passengers complained of "total chaos" at Heathrow Airport, with long queues and large crowds building up as more than 100 staff were off work and self-isolating. The airport said the issue, which only affected Terminal 5, was due to alerts issued by the NHS Test and Trace app. Meanwhile, in Scotland, airport bosses are urging the government to match the relaxation of restrictions in England, where from 19 July fully vaccinated travellers will not have to quarantine when coming back from amber list countries.

The last time I've been to Heathrow they had like 5 terminals and they were building more and this was back in 2010. Probably even more massive now. Heathrow is like its own city.

Indeed it was back then, but now, Terminal 1 has closed.

From wiki:
"...announced that as of 6 April 2020, the airport would be transitioning to single runway operations and that it would be temporarily closing Terminals 3 and 4, moving all remaining flights into Terminals 2 or 5. Dual runway operations were restored in August 2020. Heathrow returned to single runway operations on 9 November 2020. On 11 December 2020, Heathrow announced Terminal 4 would be shut until the end of 2021. Terminal 3 was reopened for use by Virgin Atlantic and Delta on 15 July 2021.W
