Subject: Things 2021 will be remembered for

It's only the 6th day but I think it's not too early to start this topic as it's already eventful, starting with the protests in DC over the election certification.

No, 2021 is the 22nd year of the 21st century. It starts at 0. 2000 is part of the 21st century too.

To be accurate, once this year is complete we would be 22 years exactly into the 21st century. Right now we are 21 years and 1 month.

Since it's commercials it's technically more entertainment than sports even though it was aired during the Superbowl event. They are a reflection of the current culture and trends. Anyhow here's another one, for those 90's nostalgia fans:

Time for an probably unpopular opinion of mine. That interview was pure cringe and a huge snoozefest. And plus, Meghan's opinions of racism in the royal palace seem suspicious at best. She never named names or provided further info on what or who she was talking about. And Harry said that he was trapped in the royal family and that's why he left with Meghan, even though they're already rich with millions of dollars and can do whatever they please. I do believe that suicidal ideation should be taken seriously, so I think that part's probably true.

In the 70s, president Gerald Ford was always tripping and falling all over the place. it became such a thing that Chevy Chase made a routine of playing a bumbling Gerald Ford on the original Saturday Night Live. We all used to chuckle about it, but Ford was a robust looking guy. It doesn't seem as funny when someone Biden's age does it.

As I mentioned in another thread, this year seems to be uneventful and not much really noteworthy compared to 2020, other than the Insurrection in DC at the very beginning (January 6), and maybe the Delta variant and the #StopAsianHate movement. Even pop culture has been stagnant, other than some movies coming out. Music might be best remembered for Olivia Rodrigo.

Probably won't be remembered in a singular way, especially since Richard Branson already did it a few weeks ago. But it may be remembered that there was a trend of a small handful of incredibly wealthy civilian men getting their kicks by spending billions building rockets and going "into space".

Generally speaking the Afghan people want to be dominated and oppressed, that is the conclusion we can draw here. They had an “army” of 300,000 and an Air Force, but they folded like a cheap suit. Being oppressed is a lifestyle in that part of the world..; they’re just doing what they do.

Perhaps. When Biden announced the end of the mission to take place on 9/11 I sarcastically said that the Taliban will be back in power on 9/12 then. Well, guess it's actually sooner. What a disgraceful sheet show.
Now all the guys who were stupid enough to help the West try to leave the country in fear of retaliation while the Taliban are already moving into Kabul. Our glorious leaders wanted to start an airlift to get Germans and people who helped our armed forces out on Monday... Guess they can save that money now. Reminds me a bit of Saigon....

Biden is right about getting out of there. After we punished the country for hosting Al-Quada, we should simply have unloaded as much destructive power on it  as possible on our way out and said “adios, mofos”.

The countrymen of Afghanistan ARE the problem. This is something that Western people do not seem to understand. The culture in that part of the world is to oppress and to be oppressed. It’s what they do. They hate Jews. They hate Christians. But most of all, they hate Muslims that do not subscribe to whatever flavor of Islam happens to be their favorite, and subjugate them. Sunnis hate Shiites. Shiites hate Sunnis. The only thing that keeps order there is brutal force. That’s all they understand. They harbored terrorists and they allowed their own country to become a hell hole long before the Americans (or the Russkies beforehand) ever set foot there.

The same dynamic surrounded the laughably-named “Arab Spring”. Westerners actually thought that those people would miraculously become democracy-loving capitalists. Instead, the “spring” was just another excuse for Faction A to kicks butt over Faction B and cause more mayhem. Libya is immeasurably worse off due to the intervention advocated by John McCain and authorized by Barack O’Bama, an intervention based on a juvenile view of foreign policy.

Lack of Western understanding is also what led to the absurdly incorrect opposition to the Assad regime in Syria and support for the opposition. Like him or not, Assad kept regional order. (His father kept order through absolutely brutal force against the Muslim Brotherhood in Hama back in the 80s, and they didn’t screw with him again.) The Syrian opposition in the 2010s was committed to unbridled mayhem. The Russians saw things correctly and backed the right side. The US backed the wrong side and still does not want to admit it.

It is what it is. Afghanistan is too far gone and there was no way that the US in the past 20 years was going to somehow erase their penchant for violence and self-subjugation. That was idiocy. We simply should have unleashed unbridled destructive power against them as punishment for their support of 9/11 and then walked away back then. They can now resume the lifestyle that they chose long ago.

A new movie called "Karen" is out today. Time will tell if it resolves the conflict that it depicts or if it just makes things worse. Is anyone here going to be watching it? Before it even opened, this movie received strong reaction from critics and the American public, mostly negative. If I watch it (and I plan to give it a chance) it will be the first 2021 movie that I've seen. I don't know if 2021 will technically be remembered for this movie but I haven't paid too much attention to popular culture this year and yet this film has caught my attention.

I noticed there's not any iconic movies that I think 2021 will be remembered for. Maybe Cruella, the Black Widow, or F9. It's not like 2005 or 1989 which had a long list of movies to watch. The movies lately have been mediocre at best, and it was that way even before the pandemic as the box office was oversaturated with Marvel/Avengers films. Although at least 2019 had the Avengers: Endgame and 2018 had Black Panther.

The same happened in "Bruce Almighty",

From wiki:
"As God (Morgan Freeman) contacts Bruce (Jim Carrey) using an actual phone number rather than one in the standard fictional 555 telephone exchange, several people and groups sharing this number received hundreds of phone calls from people wanting to talk to God, including a church in North Carolina, US (where the minister was named Bruce), a pastor in northern Wisconsin and a man running a sandwich shop in Manchester, England. The producers noted that the number (776-2323) was not in use in the area code (716, which was never specified on screen) in the film's story, but did not check anywhere else. For the home-video and television versions of the film, the number was changed to the fictional 555-0123."

The Omicron Variant, just before Christmas. It will probably go into 2022 as well.

I think so too, the way this variant is going. :(

The ideal thing to say is to wait and see how it is in ten days time, and continue to be safe.

Britney Spears was constantly making headlines in 2021 regarding her conservatorship and this is the year she became "free".

I wonder if there will be a new variant in 2022?

Atlanta Braves winning the World Series (the one good thing that happened)

Yes, I was actually glad to see them defeat the Houston Cheaters. Even though they defeated my team in the NLCS, I had to root for them because I didn't want the Stros to win it. (In fact, a number of my Facebook friends, and other Dodger fans, actually rooted for the Bravos too.) This gives the city of Atlanta its second-ever WS title (the first of which came in 1995, after back-to-back failed attempts in 1991 and 1992).

Interesting article about the pop-culture of 2021. It did mention the shift like we always discuss on here.

Omicron

Christmas 2021 will be remembered as the Omicron Christmas, while Christmas 2020 is remembered as the socially distanced/Zoom Christmas. Meanwhile Christmas 2018 I remember as the one that the song "Baby It's Cold Outside" was deemed offensive by the #MeToo movement.

Now that the year only has one more full day left, here is my final list:

- January 6/Insurrection at the Capital
- Joe Biden's inaugural year
- Continuation of COVID pandemic (Delta and Omicron variants and vaccines)
- The #StopAsianHate movement
- Crazy weather, including the ice storm in Texas, fires in Greece, floods in Germany, Hurricane Ida on the anniversary of Katrina, tornado in Kentucky
- The Afghanistan situation
- The supply chain crisis
- The cargo ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal
- Prince Harry and Meghan Markle interview with Oprah
- Space flights of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, and especially William Shatner

In pop-culture:

- Music - Olivia Rodrigo, BTS, Doja Cat, The Kid LAROI
- Movies - Dune, Spider-man: No Way Home?, Space Jam 2 (for how bad it was), Cruella, Encanto
- TV Series - Squid Game
