Subject: The vibe of 2021

Written By: batfan2005 on 06/10/21 at 8:23 am

Here is one commercial by the Norwegian Cruise Line that I feel perfectly captures the vibe of 2021, of life going back to normal after the depressing vibe of 2020. Feel free to discuss, share picture or any videos that shows the vibe of 2021. *Unfortunetely I couldn't find the YouTube video for this commercial but I found one in iSpot.tv which I don't think I can embedd (tmk) so here's a direct link:

Unfortunately the return to "normal" might not completely be a honeymoon. Things are probably going to be more on the crazy side like we've been seeing lately such as unruly airline passengers or spectators at sporting events, or at my office. It's like people forgot how to act in public.

life going back to normal

This is going to be depressing for me. Not the managing of the disease, but just... Typical expectations of socializing becoming typical again.

Same. Lockdown eases my social anxiety in public a great deal as well.

I think it's going to happen in the next couple of years.

It's looking like the vibe of the second half of the year is not looking as good as the first half. The first half had the vibe of going back to normal and the pandemic is just about over, but then came the Delta variant and it's like 2020 all over again.

First half of 2021 looked good but then this Delta variant spread and now they want to bring back the masks again and it does remind me a bit of 2020 again.

I don't mind wearing masks as I started wearing them again even though I just got vaccinated. It's just that it seemed like this whole thing was about to be over but it was like a tease.

I guess I am lucky I live in Alberta. Business as usual like the pandemic never happened. The health official even said they are treating Covid like the flu so no more isolation is necessary if you get it. No masks (except on transit), no social distancing, and you can have all the gatherings you want. For now at least...

Now I wonder when this one will be over again?

People still wear masks here but it's up to personal discretion which is fine. You don't have to if you don't want to. The only bad thing is you still have to wear masks on public transit since it is mandatory on there still.

Looks like my prediction of late 2021 looking more normal seems to be dwindling with the Delta and (possibly) Delta PLUS variants.  :\'(

I think that we're gonna have back-and-forth waves with this pandemic for a few more years at this rate.

I wonder when people will stop wearing face masks on public transportation?

How would they get rid of this Delta variant?  ???

That was awesome! I love the K-Pop smartphone promos. I remember this one from 2009, you could say it captures the vibe of that year too (sorry for 480p) :P

I thought that the early 2000's were dark and dystopian, after 9/11 and when the Iraq War started. I felt the late 2010's had an early 2000's vibe with a bright and happier twist, while the early 2020's have more of a mid 2000's vibe with a dark and dystopian twist.

Actually you are right it does feel very mid 2000sey like a dark version of it.

It doesn't seem happy now, it's more dark and depressing cause of the pandemic outbreak.

If it wasn’t for the pandemic it would have been more like it, especially with The Batman getting released on time (June 2021). Trump would have probably been reelected, so it would have been like GWB's second term. Meanwhile the Afghanistan situation might be considered Biden's Katrina.

No Afghanistan isn't Biden's Katrina, though Ida certainly might be. You can't compare an "act of God" disaster like a hurricane with a man-made disaster like Afghanistan. It's apples and oranges. Very, very different.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of Katrina (when it made landfall in Louisiana). The fact that we're still on the letter "I" and it's still in the Gulf of Mexico indicates that this is relatively slow/less active hurricane season, so far anyways. It was predicted to be worse than last year's.

Edit: The projected path is expected to target the Louisiana coast tomorrow so everyone in that area stay safe!

The reason it feels like the 2000s is because of the music (pop punk) and because Britney Spears is making headlines again. This, mixed in with the nostalgia for simpler times, is why it feels like the 2000s.

She was making headlines mostly in the mid to late 2000's for her personal life, from her marriage to Kevin Federline, having the baby with him, the divorce, and then her breakdown (like the time she shaved her head).

I notice that the nostalgia happens with each decade. In the 2000s, it was '80s nostalgia. In the '10s, it was '90s nostalgia. Now, it is 2000s nostalgia.

I won't be surprised if in 9 years we start to see '10s nostalgia pop up as well. To be honest, some of it is already happening since the early 2010s was 10-11 years ago.

BatFan is right though it's totally a mid 2000s vibe going on. It's like the mid 2000s + the pandemic and modern tech mixed in.

It doesn't feel like the 00s. Only one pop punk song got popular and Britney Spears was still popular in the first 4 years of the 2010s.

It would be a miracle if late 00s/early 10s nostalgia actually becomes mainstream. I'm nostalgic for it but a LOT of people hate on that era and it's hard to blame them to be honest.

Britney Spears was "popular" in the 2010s? What are you smoking? Yes it does feel like the 2000s. Only with the pandenic and modern day technology.  And I've heard many songs incorporate pop punk recently.

She was popular in the late 90s/early 00s and late 00s/early 10s(she released some songs in the early 10s like criminal, till the world ends and scream and shout). Not the mid 00s which is when pop punk was popular. She isn't even making music now, it's just people are paying attention to the conservatorship case.

What songs? Are they mainstream?

Also in the later part of each decade there's the first signs of nostalgia for the early part of the previous decade. In the late 90's there was nostalgia for the early 80's, in the late 2000's there was early 90's nostalgia, and then in the late 2010's for early 2000's.

I think the peak of nostalgia rn is centered around the mid-2K's & rock-oriented music is clearly making a comeback. But every era ends up unique & new so even if we have a core 2000's revival it'll still be different

2021 just like 2020 is a serious year. The 2020s are completely opposite of the 2010s where the 2010s were very superficial and about dumb challenges and memes. In the 2020s, since the seriousness of the situation we are in with the pandemic and all that it is a lot more serious and mature. You can kind of see this reflected in the music and people's attitudes in general. It's not that corny memey vibe and social media vibe anymore. It is more serious.

Also the current it girls like Ariana Grande and Doja Cat have reached the status similar to Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton in the mid-2000's. Before there wasn't as much of a celebrity obsession other than Kim Kardashian.
