Subject: Things 2022 will be remembered for

Written By: batfan2005 on 01/17/22 at 8:11 am

I think we can go ahead and start this list.

- Omicron (continuation from late 2021)
- Passings of Betty White (although technically 2021 but on the very last day) and Bob Saget
- Beijing Winter Olympics (upcoming)
- Tonga eruption/tsunami
- Winter Storm Izzy and other potential climate disasters

Since I live in Georgia, this is probably something more remembered locally but UGA winning the NCAA football title, especially since defeating Alabama so it's a true underdog story.

It will be remembered for movies again as many that were originally set from 2021 and even 2020 are going to be released this year. Certain titles include The Batman, Jurassic World Dominion, Uncharted, and the Flash just to name a few.

...or the non-Beijing Winter Olympics, possibly?

That still ended up happening. So far the big highlights are with figure skaters Kamila Valieva and Nathan Chen setting records.

Also the possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. Hopefully and praying it doesn't happen, but even the tension and threat will be remembered as it's been all over the news.

One nice thing about Japan… if you are sentenced to death, death is what you’re gonna get.

They don’t tell you when you’re gonna be executed until the morning of the event. Your relatives are not notified until after the deed is done. And they do it the old fashioned way, the “long drop” hanging technique.

I worked with a Japanese company for nearly 20 years. In no way, shape, or form is it similar to what some Americans would proclaim as “progressive’.

In Japan you follow the damned rules or you are absolutely screwed. It is a cultural monolith. When I was there one time for three weeks, I only saw one black man, and he was part of my crew. When we walked the Ginza, he was the main attraction as people gawked.

I sometimes wish I still lived in Japan. Although I'm sure I'll handle the work culture. I was there with the military so I didn't have to deal with that. Although the military culture otoh, that's another issue.

The disco era did not originate in the UK. They did have the so-called "Northern Soul" thing (ALL the music of which originated in the US), but disco, as it became known in the mainstream, was originated in underground clubs of New York City frequented almost exclusively by African-Americans, Latinos and gay men. And the BeeGees recorded all of their disco hits at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida with US musicians, not in the UK.

Now that we're almost at the midpoint of the year, I'll go ahead and compile the list from the first half of the year:

- The Russian invasion of Ukraine (obvious top story, like COVID was to 2020)
- Mass shootings in the US (particularly Uvalde, TX) which relaunched the gun control debate and possible reform in Congress
- Inflation, gas prices, Bitcoin crash
- "The slap heard around the world" at the Oscars
- The potential abortion ban by SCOTUS
- Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard
- Monkeypox
- January 6 hearings
- Midterm elections (Dr. Oz, Herschel Walker, Sarah Palin's return)

Pop culture/trends: The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, Harry's House, Jack Harlow, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bel-Air reboot, Wordle

Here's an end of Q3 update. I noticed I posted this in mid-June so it was before the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and also since then:

- Passing of Queen Elizabeth II and coronation of King Charles III
- Boris Johnson resignation and election of Liz Truss
- Assassination of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe
- Hurricanes Fiona and Ian
- Record heatwaves, fires, and flooding
- Pelosi's Taiwan visit and China's subsequent response
- DeSantis sending immigrants to Martha's Vineyard
- More of Trump's legal issues such as the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago to find classified docs, the civil suit by the NY AG, and fraud charges
- Potentially the soccer riot in Indonesia
- The cooking chicken in Nyquil challenge

In pop-culture, I think I would remove Jurassic World Dominion, Obi-Wan, Bel-Air reboot, and probably even Jack Harlow; and I would add Kate Bush's "Running Up the Hill" that was popular due to Stranger Things 4th season, and also Beyonce's Renaissance album and Bad Bunny.

Now that this is the last day, I think it's safe to finally post the final list. Here it is:

- The Russia invasion of Ukraine
- The passing of Queen Elizabeth II
- The Uvalde, TX elementary school shooting
- Inflation and high gas prices
- Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars
- Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard
- Elon Musk and Twitter
- Kan(ye)'s rants and legal drama w/Kim Kardashian
- Trump's legal troubles including the January 6 trials, FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago, and release of his tax records
- Midterm elections
- Iran protests
- China protests against the Zero COVID policy
- China/Taiwan tensions
- Overturning of Roe v. Wade
- Monkeypox (or M-pox)
- Climate disasters (record heatwaves, fires, floods, Hurricane Ian, Winter Storm Elliott/record cold around Christmas)
- Boris Johnson resignation, then Liz Truss resignation
- Assassination of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe
- World Cup in Qatar, Argentina won as it was Messi's last game before retirement

In pop-culture:
- Top Gun Maverick, The Batman, Wakanda Forever, Avatar 2
- Harry Styles, Taylor Swift's Midnights album, Beyonce's Renaissance album, Bad Bunny
- Kate Bush's "Running Up the Hill" from Stranger Things Season 4
- Wednesday (particularly the viral dance scene to The Cramps' "Goo Goo Muck")

I think that's it, but please feel free to add anything. See you in 2023!

Yes it was, and notice there wasn't much to list for pop-culture.

Soon as there is something I think it will be really for.

I think a good time to do it is by the middle of the year.

Encanto (technically from 2021, but more of a 2022 movie)
Turning Red
The Bad Guys
Puss In Boots 2 (which will go down as more of a 2023 movie)
Everything Everywhere All At Once

That one has potential to be an Oscar winner. When it comes to movies, unlike songs, I associate them with the year they were released even if they remain popular the following year (even ones such as Avatar, Avatar 2, Titanic, etc.). Songs otoh may not be played much less chart until the following year.
