Sealed 'Back to the Future' VHS tape sells for $75,000 at US auction

Copy of film on now antiquated format was previously owned by actor Tom Wilson, who played Biff Tannen in movie series

A sealed VHS tape of the hit 1980s movie "Back to the Future" has sold for $75,000 in the first ever auction of the now antiquated video-playing format.

The auction, held by Texas-based Heritage Auctions, featured 260 sealed VHS tapes, most of which were first-edition copies of movies from the 70s and 1980s. The Hill reported that the price tag meant the tape was probably the most expensive ever sold.

The copy of "Back to the Future", was previously owned by the actor Tom Wilson, who portrayed Biff Tannen in the movie series.

It included a signed note from Wilson that said: “This is a VHS tape of the first release of Back to the Future, sent to me by the studio at that time. Since I knew that the VHS platform would be around forever, I saved it for later and now I can’t find a VCR. Oh well. Enjoy!”

There is a mini-boom among collectors for old VHS tapes, especially those that are first editions of hit movies or are in their original wrapping.

That a lot of dough. Who would have thought it would fetch such a price.

Perhaps the same will happen with DVDs once something else completely replaces them.  If you have DVDs or VHS tapes in their original wrapping, don't open them! Might be worth a lot.

Let's fix up that DeLorean vehicle with a flux capacitor. Then get 1.21 gigawatts of power and go 88 miles per hour back to 1985 and buy more of those VHS tapes and return to 2022 with a sh!tload of them.      Damn I hope none of us who go back have covid coz them we'll be spreading covid in 1985 and disrupt the space-time continuum.
Think contigo, think!!! Oh and lets not forget to grab that sports almanac.

I have a few DVDs still in the sealed wrapping, but I think not worth so much.

Most copies of back to the future 1,2 and 3 are digital trash I wouldnt pay 2 cents for!!

They have been flattend out like a pancake and look horrible...

I finally found GOOD copies of 2 and 3 (They were rentals) but the first one sadly I dont think exists on VHS in its original analogue format.... (I got that recorded from HBO on 4/1/87)

I don't think it would go for much. The value in the VHS tape seems largely to be for whom it's previous owner was.

I say if you were to check eBay, it would go for between 20 and 30 dollars for the blank ones.

I think he means a Betamax of "Back to the Future", as that's what this topic is about if you check.
