Subject: What was the first single you bought?

Written By: Gis on 12/21/01 at 03:14 a.m.

I would love to say it was 'I don't like mondays' by the Boomtown rats but sadly I must confess to 'Coward of the county' by Kenny Rogers :-[
This has to be the first one you bought yourself not ones bought for you!

Good idea for a thread!!  Mine was "Rock On" by David Essex - never bought the 80's version by Michael Damian - he ruined it.

Thirty five years, but how did they pass so fast. Seems like it couldn't be that long ago.

But not as long ago as the first 45 I ever bought--"Bottle of Wine" by the Fireballs.  That song came out in 1968, a year after "Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever."  I bought it with money I got on my 11th birthday.  (I'm really that old!)

I got most of my singles as hand me downs from aunts & uncles (most only 10-15 yrs older than me) or from the guy that ran the jukebox at the bar my parents managed.

The first ones I can remember buying are "Short People" by Randy Newman and "Morning Train" by Sheena Easton.  (hmmmm, Sheeenaaaa.....)   :o

The fist 45 I ever bought was Lay Down Sally.  I can even remember who sang that song.  Oh crap!  Now the tune is stuck in my head........

I bought 4 songs the first time I could buy 45s. But the only ones I remember were "Turned To Stone" by ELO and "Theme from 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'" by John Williams (the dance mix).

I have never bought a single. Why bother? The radio is going to play it once an hour until I'm so sick of it that I don't even like the band anymore.

Welcome Hair!

I like your name a lot.  ;D

Is it just me, or can anyone else see Hair's avatar?

I fully agree with Hair's statement. I no longer buy singles for the same exact reason.

"Lay Down Sally" was by Eric Clapton.  I had the "Cocaine" 45, myself ("Living on Tulsa Time" was the b-side).

One of the first singles i bought was "so this is christmas" by john and yoko 1971(?)  It was transparent green.  On the other side was a horrible yoko song (are there any good ones?)  Before that All I had was  Banana splits and a Bobby goldsboro albums that my mother bought me.  I'm still feeling the effects from that.... 8)

This is an interesting thread from a personal view, since, out of all the CD's I have (a couple of thousand) none of them are CD singles. After all, the best of songs only gives a maximum of an hour and a half listening before you (or anyone else who's listening to it) gets bored.

Subject: Re: What was the first single you bought?

I'm talking about continuous listening here, by the way... one and a half hours of continuous listening of the same song.

Hmm my first single wasn't really that long ago, but completly laughable, Spice Girls 'Say You'll Be There' ( Come on, i was 11!) I had two casettes for my b'day when i was 5, and they were Kylie Minogues and Jason Donovans albums! :) However, the first album i bought with my own money was Ace Of Base - Happy Nation. Still listen to it now and again actaully.

"Footloose" by Kenny Loggins (I was 12).
My first albums on cassette were Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Def Leppard's "Pyromania."
My first 12-inch single was Paul Hardcastle's "19."  Sorry, all 80's posted on the 70's board.

My first single I bought with my whopping $5 dollar a week allowance :D was  Anabella by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds and at the same time I purchased  Albert Flasher by The Guess Who....I also Love the B-side called  Broken. I can't seem to find either side on cd though.....oh well, I guess I'll just have to listen through the infamous  Snap, Crackle & Pop of the 45 :(

I gather this happens a lot from country to country.

I noticed the other day on your avatar (An album each day in May) that the AC/DC High Voltage cover was not the same a sthe one in Australia.

Mouthful of Grass, huh ?  Wonder what direction that came from ?

On the topic of AC/DC, I also used to own a copy of the Australian import for  "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" with animation in a pool hall on the cover.  Also, the version of that song had about 20 seconds "Cut" from it on the US LP.  I just recently found on the newer CD's that the full version has been restored...as you probably know already, I HATE when they cut up full versions of songs!

That one is a bit difficult as I rarely bought singles, but rather full LPS! But, I guess I wiss say ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT by Cat Stevens, because at the time it first came out, it was not on any LP! It did come out on his GREATEST HITS about a year or so later, which I also bought!

Peace,Cat Lover

Growing up I had a stack of 45s but never bought any until I was 18.  (I had older sisters.)  I always purchased albums because it was a better deal, 10-12 songs for $5 rather than 2 songs for $2.  But when I was 18 I was in love with this guy and I bought "Magnet And Steel" by Walter Egan, "You Needed Me" by Anne Murray, and "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner.  You see, those were 'our songs' and he dumped me six months later.  Alas, what memories music brings...LOL :)

A'isha

Flip Your Wig (album) by Husker Du on cassette (just for the song "Makes No Sense At All").

The Aladdin Sane LP by David Bowie (just for "The Prettiest Star" song).

I don't recall the first single I bought, but I'm sure it was a DeMode one. I think it was "See You" or else it was "New Life."

The first 45 I remember buying myself was Donna Summer's "BAD GIRLS"  I was with my grandmother and she gave me $5 to buy something at Treasure City (the Wal-Mart of its day)... Even at 11 or 12 I was sure that I shouldn't have been listening to it and knew my mom would think the same thing...
I also remember seeing Blue Lagoon with Brook Shields and Christoper Atkins... I think my grandmother almost had a stroke when they were half naked! HAHA
Seems like the best times of my early yrs were financied my Grams... I miss her to this day! May she rest in peace!
