Subject: What was the first LP you bought?

Written By: Indy Gent on 01/15/02 at 07:18 p.m.

I received a copy of Kiss "Double Platinum" as a gift in 1977, but the first album I really bought was Foreigner "4" in 1981.
I'm sure there are some good 70s albums I somehow missed. :-[

I received a copy of the Genesis album with the song "Abacab" (may be the album's title as well) on it as a gift...think that was around 1979 or 1980.  But the first lp I remember buying myself would have to be Billy Idol's Rebel Yell.  Great idea for a thread, America!   ;)

First purchase was probably KISS' "Love Gun", from the cheap bin.

Yep, the album was titled Abacab as well. "No Reply at All" was the other hit single...  ;)

The first LP I ever bought was a K-tel album called "Out of Sight."  The first real LP I ever bought was the Bay City Rollers' "Rock & Roll Love Letter."  (I was led to believe that the Bay City Rollers were the next Beatles.  Go on, laugh.)  :o

Although I would never admit it to anyone in my family, I was quite fortunate to have two older brothers who had superb musical tastes (back then).  We (they) had an extensive record collection (and a crappy basement stereo - LOL) so I never really had to buy my own records - I'd sneak downstairs when they were out and listen to whatever I felt like).  KISS was a favorite as was April Wine - in fact, whenever I hear a particular April Wine song, it reminds me of Lipton Chicken Noodle soup because for about six months, when we'd get home for lunch, my brother would cook us his specialty and blare "Rock and Roll is a Vicious Game" throughout lunch.

Anyway, I know my very first record was a Blondie album and for some reason, I tend to think that it may have been "Parallel Lines", too  ???.  The album coverwas black and white and had Deborah Harry and the band standing on the front.

The first album I took possession of was an album from the Beatles.  I didn't purchase that one so I guess it doesn't count.

I can't quite remember the first LP I purchased but the earliest I can remember were from Leif Garrett and Shawn Cassidy.  Had major crushes on them back then.  My walls were plastered with their pictures.  Never really cared for their music (even then) but I had to buy their albums.   ;D

By the time I was buying music, most people my age didn't buy records any more. I bought cassette tapes first, then CDs. The first cassettes I bought were "13" (the Doors), "Who's Next" (the Who) and the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack.

Steve Miller Band/ Book of Dreams
Boston/ Boston
&
Stevie Wonder/ Songs In The Key Of Life

The first album I bought, with my own saved up money aged 14 in 1977 was "Waiting For The Night" by The Runaways.

Going back to The Monkees (Hairspray, rf and Holly), you may be interested to hear that their TV shows have recently been repeated on the UK Disney Channel during the school holidays. My two elder daughters (aged 8 and 6) absolutely loved it and can't stop talking about it.

It made me smile 'cos I remember watching these shows during my school holidays in the 70s....and they were old repeats even then!

The first album I bought was a part share in the Grease soundtrack.  I clubbed together with one of my brothers to buy it.

The first one I can remember buying on my own was The Changeling by Toyah.  I was a big Toyah fan and have most of her albums.

I must confess I was also a victim of Rollermania.  LOL!  Me and my best friend both got the Bay City Roller's first album for Christmas and we played that album about 10 times a day.  I remember we had to put a nickle on top of the needle arm so it wouldn't skip.
