Subject: Favorite 70s Variety Show?

Written By: Indy Gent on 01/16/02 at 03:49 p.m.

What was your favorite comedy/musical variety show, including summer shows and short-lived shows? Most people remember "Laugh-In", "The Sonny and Cher Show", "The Carol Burnett Show" and "The Donny and Marie Show". But you're not limited to just those. ;D :D 8) :o :)

That's a hard one.  I really only remember Hee Haw, Carol Burnett, Sonny & Cher, and Donny & Marie.  We watched all of them!

I remember The Mike Douglas Show as well as Hee Haw and Donny & Marie.  I'm sure there are others that I just can't think of right now.   ;)

Ok, I was never any older than 7 in the 70's, so the Muppet Show was my favorite.   :)

Might have been '60's, but I remember watching a Jerry Lewis variety show when I was young. Also, can't forget the Smothers Brothers.

Was the Barbra Mandrell Show in the 70's or 80s?  We watched that and pretty much all the rest mentioned.  I've always been a fan of variety shows.

Flip Wilson, The Bradys, Tony Orlando & Dawn

Didn't Rich Little have a show?

I watched The Hudson Brothers...and does anyone remember The Rae's? I think they were only in Canada but there's was the first show I ever saw Pat Benatar on (she sang Heartbreaker and I was hooked)...I never forget seeing Rex Smith on there singing You Take My Breath Away...a girl in the crowd grabbed his vest and refused to let go LOL..and my Grandfather said "I've never seen anyone sing about their pants before!" b/c RS was wearing VERY tight leather pants...and I also watched Sonny & Cher....

"The Muppet Show" was my favorite. I also liked "SCTV Network 90", "Donny & Marie", and "Pink Lady & Jeff".

You must be the only one who liked "Pink Lady and Jeff" because the critics hated this show. The only English that the Japanese Pink Lady could say was what was on the teleprompter. My guilty pleasure was "The Jim Stafford Show", which featured all his hits except "Spiders and Snakes". I guess he had enough requests for that by the late 70s.

I never cared much for variety shows, the Muppet Show was the big exception of course, but it was aimed for kids which I was in the 70s.. Carol Burnett had it's moments though..

I remember being subjected to Hee Haw once or twice as a kid, but I only remember it after being subjected to regression therapy, having blocked all my bad memories and all...

Now that I think about it, yes I believe he did.  I seem to recall having watched it as a kid   :)

"The Rich Little Show" ran on NBC for a very short time in 1976. I remember when it was on.

My father used to watch Hee Haw all the time, and I hated it. Except when they used to do the mixed-up fairy tales. You know, where Rindercella danced with the pransome hince at the bancy fall and he lell in fove with her. Until she slopped her dripper...  ;)

Oh wow, there were so many!!!  I am gonna try and hit on some that most people may have forgotten:

Shields And Yarnell (The Mime Show)
Captain ANd Tennille (I still laugh when I remember "Staircase & Hutch"!!!!!)
THe Dick Van Dyke Show (My first viewing of Andy Kaufman...  as an Elvis impersonator)
Sid & Marty Kroft:  Kind of a prequel for The Muppets
Hannah-Barbara show: Also live action, with these bizzare puppets, and a very early example of what blue screen qould do to TV.
Flip Wilson Show: Was a true landmark, was sad to hear of his death.
The Smother's Brothers:  Clean-cut act that was banned by network censors many times.  Pat Paulson For President!

Those are a few of the more obscure ones, anybody else remember more?

The Carol Burnett Show was my all-time favorite.  Tim Conway was hilarious and he always seemed to make Harvey Korman crack up in the middle of a skit, which was part of the fun in watching.  I always liked the Mr Tudball/Mrs Wiggins skits.

I also liked Donny and Marie.  It's kinda corny to look at now, but back then, it was great!  ;D
