What do you mean?  Are you talking about stuff like people say Paul's talking backwards on Beatle's albums?

They Might Be Giants have a couple of songs where they fake it - it  really sounds as if there is backwards singing, but they are just singing forwards in that distinctive oooWAH style :)

I have heard some songs before that had reverse lyrics and it was done intentionally. I think Pink Floyd had some, Beatles, Ozzy and some others I don't know the names of.

'Another One Bites The Dust' by Queen has 'It's fun to smoke marijuana' if played backwards.  My husband used to be fascinated by this ides, so he broke apart the cassette, flipped the tape, and listened.  ::)  Hey, I didn't marry him until later.  LOL  But he did let me hear the tape. ;)

Some of the more famous examples of backward masking are songs by Led Zeppelin ("Stairway To Heaven"), The Eagles ("Hotel California"), The Beatles (numerous songs), Prince ("Darling Nikki"), E.L.O. ("Fire Is High"), Front 242 ("Masterhit"), Pink Floyd (I'm not exactly sure which song, but it's from "The Wall"), and others. Blondie's "Call Me", when played backwards, says, "We want out...we want out...we want out". Petra spoofed backward masking at the beginning of "Judas Kiss": when played backwards it says, "What are you looking for the devil for, when you ought to be looking for the Lord?".  I'm very fascinated by the use of subliminals in music.

But as realistic as the one site posted the backwards lyrics to "Stairway", that one wasn't done intentionally by the group.

Was it?  ???  If so..... Have they officially spoken of it anywhere?

Have you ever actually listened to it backwards?

Thanks to my unusual record player, which plays things backwards, I have.  Yes, you can hear Led Zeppelin sing "My sweet Satan, if, and I stress this, you really stretch.  If I hadn't already been told about it, and knew just where to play, and what to listen for, I would never have heard it.  As for it possibly ever affecting people who listen to the song normally being influenced by it?  No way.

Last year I found out that on the 1980 J. Geils Band album "Love Stinks" play a song called "No Anchovies Please" backwards after hearing a strange foreign speaking language and backwards the jibberish says...She he used to like chicken sh*t instead of Chicken salad.  Something like that anyway.  I also know as do many that the Beatles "Revolution #9" on the White album says "Turn me on dead man".

Interesting topic.  Yeah, I guess I too went through a short phase of fascination with backwards masking and the like.  I found the most intriguing to be the ones which appeared to be an unintentional and coincidental result of playing seemingly sensible lyrics in reverse.  As opposed to the instances when the artist(s) obviously and intentionally tossed in some unintelligible jibberish when played forwards, which would say something like, "Hey kids, buy all of our records!  And by the way, praise be to Satan!"  Ha!!!  A little less 'spooky', wouldn't you say?

I've heard, or at least heard of, about every one mentioned in the replies up to now.  Forgive me if I missed this one being mentioned.  It was brought to my attention by a friend from work a few years ago.  The difference being, this is not backwards masking.  It is just something that you might not notice unless you are actually listening for it.

If you listen carefully towards the end of Def Leppard's 'Love Bites', you hear what sounds to be a kind of deep, mechanical sounding voice uttering some words of some nearly unintelligible sort.  I suppose it is best heard by playing the compact disc and using a decent set of headphones.

What is it you will hear you may be asking?

"Jesus of Nazareth...Go to Hell..."

Remember now, this is heard when the song is played FORWARDS, NOT backwards.  Still, I feel it qualifies for this topic.

I was kind of surprised by this myself.  Not what I expected from a Def Leppard that it seemed to me had become much more 'pop' and 'bubble gum' from their earlier efforts like 'High and Dry", still my fave Def Leppard release because it is seemed more raw and real, and less 'polished' by overdone studio 'enhancements'.  Can't deny the overwhelming popularity they achieved with their later efforts though!

Nonetheless, I will always hold them in high regard.  Not so much for their music as for their loyalty to a friend.  At the top of their success, as we all know, drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a horrendous car accident.  Undoubtedly pressured by the record execs to replace him and move on, the boys from Def Leppard flatly refused.  They had grown up together and been friends long before being successful musicians.  They risked everything for their friend and band mate, sitting idle for two years of his rehabilitation.  They found a way for him to continue as the band's drummer.  And upon their triumphant return to the scene, enjoyed a richly deserved return to the top!

How big is that?  It doesn't get any bigger.  What would have happened to Rick Allen had his band mates and, more importantly, friends, deserted him?  Would his despair become unbearable?  Would his will to live be lost?  It is certainly quite possible.  But his friends stuck by him, refused to continue without him, encouraged him that he would play again, and made it happen!  I don't care if their next effort is "Def Leppard Remakes Love Ballads from the 1970's"!  They will always have my deepest respect!

But guys, there really is no need for anti-Christian messages thrown in for giggles is there?  Leaving that little bit out at the end, and 'Love Bites' is one awesome tune!

Any comments?

not exactly backwards masking, but perhaps the most intriguing of all, is the Pink Floyd 'Dark Side of the Moon'/'Wizard of OZ' connection.  If you have never tried it, it is worth the effort...

You need the Wizard of Oz on VHS or DVD, and you need the CD of 'Dark Side of the Moon'....

Turn down the sound on your television...

Put the 'Dark Side of the Moon' in your CD player and put 'The Wizard of Oz' cassette or DVD in your VCR or DVD player...

Press 'PLAY' on your CD player with the third roar of the MGM lion at the beginning of the 'Wizard of Oz"...

you will be amazed at how the lyrics and the music go hand in hand with the movie...from the beginning of the CD until the end...it does not go through the end of the movie...the CD ends when Dorothy knocks against the tin man's chest to listen for a heartbeat...it is very strange and fascinating...give it a try if you wish...

by the way, if you will notice, the cover of "Dark Side of the Moon' has a white light entering a prism and turning into the colors of the spectrum (or rainbow)...

'The Wizard of Oz' begins in black and white, and turns into color when Dorothy opens the door to the house after it has landed in the Land of Oz...

My favorite part of the whole thing is when Dorothy is balancing herself and walking along the fence where the pigs are kept on her Auntie Em's farm...asshe is balancing herself, the lyrics say, "Long you live, and high you fly, only if you ride the tide, balanced on the biggest wave, you race towards an early grave..."  the line, "you race towards an early grave" plays simultaneously with Dorothy losing her balance and falling from the fence...she falls face up...as one would lie in their grave...

that is just one of many...far too many to list...you can do this many times, and each time, you will notice something new that you did not catch before...it is really wild...

Anyone else tried this?

Just one -

You're wrong.

That isn't the line.  Keep in mind, the title is "Love Bites."  Joe Elliott has just finished singing "Just as you've got love in your sights, watch out!  Love bites!"  At this point, Mutt Lange came in saying, "Yes it does!  Bloody Hell!"

THAT'S what you're hearing.  This has been covered endlessly in many a Def Leppard debate, and the guys really wish it had been clearer, but the line is simply "Yes it does.  Bloody hell.", said by Mutt Lange, the producer, the same guy who gave us "Gunter Glieben Glouten Globen"

Backwards lyrics mean absolutely nothing to anyone who hasn't played them backwards.  I trust that there is no subliminal message that can get through to listeners unaware.  My thoughts are that it's producers having fun, like Disney animators that throw a quick nude in w/o the knowledge of others.  Led Zepplin evil satan worshippers?  Maybe, but they did some great music in there day and I haven't been swayed to the "dark side"

Thanks for your response.  Yes, I certainly could be wrong, as you say.  As I mentioned, I was told about this from a friend at work.  So obviously I went home and listened to it.  I think that it is unclear enough to the point that the power of suggestion can trick your mind into hearing whatever it is that you are trying to hear!  Does that make sense?

If someone had told me that it said, "bees buzz...skunks smell," then I am sure that is what I would hear when listening to it carefully!  Ha!

Right or wrong.  Wrong or right.  Doesn't matter.  If, as you said, this has been a matter of endless debate already, then there will always be differing viewpoints about what it really says.

As for me, all I can say at this point is that I am no longer sure exactly what is says!  But I guess this sort of thing always makes for interesting discussion nonetheless!

I just don't see how there CAN be differing viewpoints about what it says, when the band themselves AND Mutt Lange have both publicly stated that it's what I've stated it is.  But, people believe what they want to believe, and want to believe that there is something sinister in it, so they will always say so.

Backward masking??  I have heard many rumours and innuendo's (mostly made by extremist evangelists) of songs that supposedly contain backward messages.  I wrecked a precious first pressing of LedZep vol.4 trying to hear "hear's to my sweet satan" in Stairway to Heaven but I couldn't detect it.

Bob & Doug McKenzie "Great White North" had a spoof section on it.  Otherwise, backward masking is total BS. Any recording engineer will tell ya that.

Like Judas Priest said in an interview in 1990 after a court found their music not responsible for causing a 16 yr old to commit suicide - the recording time costs are huge to if they were to make a supposed message they'd put: "Buy 10 Albums"   ;D

There are a lot. I am too young to remember the "Paul is dead" and "I burried John" ones, which Nick at Nite spoofed for the Brady Bunch ("I killed Cindy," etc.)

But the one I will probably never forget regards backwards messages in a couple Styx songs, most notably "Kilroy Was Here" (Yes, the one with that Robot song ;)]:

Actually, with CD's and computers, backwards masking is much simpler to try than it once was back in the vinyl LP days.

Back then, the curious would have to put the LP on the turntable and place the needle down at the desired 'spot', then manually spin the LP backwards, resulting in uneven speeds and so forth.

With CD's, if one has the curiosity to want to investigate it, they simply need to load the CD into their CD-ROM drive and use their Windows sound recorder application to record the segment of the song in question.  Then use the 'play in reverse' option to hear the recorded segment in reverse.

Not only is it simpler, but it also plays in reverse with an exact and conistent speed.

Agreed?

But beyond it all, we have all heard extremely clear lyrics played straightforward that are as bad as any supposed reverse lyrics!  AC/DC's Highway To Hell, for example!  Black Sabbath's N.I.B. as another.  Far too many to name!

So we need not spin discs in reverse to hear these spooky Satanic lyrics!

Peace Out!

'Highway to Hell' is not Satanic. It's a metaphor for touring the US nine to ten months of the year in order to make the scene there. If that's the most "Satanic" song you can come up, you need to try harder.

You're a sleepy symphony, Bob :P

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida:

Forwards:

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida honey
Don't you know that I love you

Backwards:

Bunny, I'm late
No time to talk
Ha ha ha
Honey, go to North for egg

Hu huh, what?

BTW, I used a live version of the song off of the 1996 reissue of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. :P

In "Louie Louie" (a hundred versions, but here we're talking of the original by the Kingsmen) is not easy to get the lyrics. According to a r'n'b fan friend of mine, the single had the rep for having backwards talk on it, stating that "Satan is the prince" and so on. When it was brought to court, the judge took it home over the week-end and listened, and then gave the verdict:
"This song is incomprehensible at any speed whatsoever"

i agree, they don't need to have the  anti-christian statement in the song, i have always been a fan of def leppard from the first time i saw them in concert they opened for billy squier and they blew him away, i saw them before the accident and after the accident, and i also agree, they have my respect for sticking by their friend,i bet not very many would do that.

I recall many evenings as a teenager playing Pink Floyd's "The Wall" backwards with my finger on the turntable when I should have been doing my homework. I eventually found the message - I thinks it's in the playout to "Run Like Hell". It's Roger Waters giving some message about Syd Barrett, something about "please address your messages of support to Old Pink at The ? Farm, Cambridge".

I also remember that US court case about Judas Priest being accused of inciting a teenager to suicide through satanic backward messages on some LP track. I saw the court proceedings on a TV program recently where they played the track backwards in court. It sounded like "eeeeuuuuggggghhhh......eeeooowwwww" to me, but the prosecution claimed that this was actually "Do it, now!", by which "it" was supposed to mean "commit suicide". What a farce.

The famous Beatles one was "I buried Paul" wasn't it, spoken by John at the end of "I Am The Walrus" I think, also supposedly supporting the theory that Paul was dead raised by the "Abbey Road" cover shot with John as the priest, George as the chief mourner, Paul as the deceased (with bare feet) and Ringo as the gravedigger. Or something like that.

This whole idea of backwards messages was invented by enraged parents who tried to prove Rock was evil.::)
So they played some songs backwards, such as Stairway To Heaven and Another One Bites The Dust. The first one is true, but was not made on purpose. I don't think Robert Plant was actually paying a tribute to Satan...  ::) The second one is nonsense. Queen has denied any messages or the intention to be making such.
