Subject: Didn't the '70s look the same Animal as the '60s?

Written By: Paul S. on 09/02/02 at 02:18 p.m.

I don't mean to rag on the '70s, I was born in 1978 so the 1970s will always have that special place in my heart.  But whenever I looked at stuff from the '70s, damn the decade always looked like the same animal or creation as the 1960s.  It didn't look that different from the '60s.  Hippies and hippie outfits, flower power, Vietnam and Nixon, going to the moon, that was all the '60s.  Oh sure there were things like Disco and Mood Rings to set it apart a little, but it basically looked the same.  Though I realize the late '70s were different.

That's one of the great things about the '80s.  The '80s were very different from the '60s or '70s, a complete pop culture paradigm shift.  Now granted the '90s were just a repeat of the '70s, but at least it was different from the '80s.

I get the feeling the '00s suffer the same fate as the '70s.  The '00s look to be the same pop culutrual animal as the 1990s.

Well, there is going to be a natural flow of continuity from one decade to another...it is not as if on the very first day of the new decade the reminders of the old decade suddenly vanish, and there are new clothes, new music, and new trends to take their place on Janusry 1st.  That being said, sometimes a decade is a few years old before the trademark trends of that era make themselves known.  For instance, 1980 and 81 had a residual 70's flavor to them, as did 1990 and 1991 of the 80's.

Only my opinion, of course.

I dunno

As I was born in the early 60's, there seemed to me to be a lot of difference between the two of them.

I tend to think only in musical terms though

For me there has been a downward graph in musical terms, since the early to mid-70's, and the spiral continues today.

I am talking in terms of the quantity of quality music.  Granted there is lots of good stuff around now, but there is such a large proportion of mindless dross mixed in with it.  So many cardboard cut-out pop stars now....

Yes we had them in the 60's and 70's too, but even blatent marketing exercises had talent (e.g. Monkees) - These days it's find a cute chick, dress her in a piece of sticky tape, and get her to do some mind-numbingly boring dance routine for four minutes to a song with 1.5 notes, no chorus, no melody, and probably little to no singing.......

End of whinge..... ::)

I don't think that can be helped.  It's like Banasy said.  No one actually watches the numbers and makes sure they switch gears.

Personally, I think "decades" in cultural terms are usually actually more like x3-4 to x3-4.  Amazing how long it can take for things to change.  I agree, for ex, that the early/mid-'70s were really like the late '60s.  And the late '60s were not like the early '60s really.  I know that my middle school years (early '80s) were actually more like the late '70s.  When I got to HS in '83, it finally seemed like things were really changing (and I mean on a daily basis, not pop culture at large).  Yes we already had some pop icons change some things like music and style, but few everyday people were copying them.

It's weird, it's as if underneath it all we have this nagging need to change for a number.  But it doesn't show at 1st.  People just carry on what they've been doing.  And then it's as if a few years after the 3rd digit changed, people are thinking "whoa, we hafta change everyday life from that last 3rd digit so this 3rd digit has its own identity!"  So really, the '80s are '83-'93, and the '70s are maybe '73-'83.  Or something like that!     ::) ;D
