Subject: Favorite concert,festival,show,etc.

I couldn't decide whether to post this  in the PPP, the 2000s, or here but it just seems that back in the day a concert was much more of a major event. No fair posting about shows that you don't remember attending ::) ie. I saw Jethro Tull, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and quite a few more GREAT bands that I'm sure would be on top of my personal favorite list but being honest with myself now, I don't recall whether they were good concerts or not. ???   That said, my personal favorite show musically was Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, and Santana. How about it?

You mean none of y'all have any good concert stories? Maybe I shouldn't have limited it. OK you can post about the ones that are a little hazy memoriewise too. :D

I saw most concerts in the 80's.  (Not many since then).  But the best would have to be Bruce Springsteen in Brisbane in about '84 or '85.

How about the ones in which you DREAMED about attending, but weren't able to! Yes, back in the early 70s, as just a young teenager, I wanted, so desparately, to see THE CAT MAN in concert, but was never able to! I was too young to take myself, and had noone to go with! I was pretty devistated at that!  Of course, I DID see the ABC IN CONCERT SPECIAL on TV, way back when, Cat hosted a whole epicode! If TV concerts count, I will say that is the one!

Now, at those I HAVE attended, I've seen Sir Paul McCartney, three times, the last being just a few short months ago! I I can honestly say that was the best show I have been to! At 60 years of age, Sir Paul can still rock with the best of them, including those more than half his age!

My first one.  Styx, Lakeland Civic Center - FL, March 1979

It was the FIRST ONE!!  It was a spectacle.  John Waite's The Babys opened for Styx and they were great, too.  They sang (among others) "Isn't It Time" and "Everytime I Think Of You"...  awesome.

Now imagine...

The arena goes black.  We are all standing in darkness.  Not very loudly, you can make out the instrumental intro of "Grand Illusion".  The intro builds... and just before Dennis De Young starts to sing the opening line...

BOOM!

The stage blows up and as soon as the blast subsides...  Dennis sings...

"Welcome to the grand illusion! Come on in and see what's happening!  Pay the price, get your tickets for the show...."

Still gives my chills.

I've been to so many concerts that I can't remember them all. I would say the best were the Stones at the Pontiac Silverdome in 1981; Patti Smith at the Agoura in Cleveland in 1978 and Elliott Murphy at the Kent State Auditorium in 1976... :D :D

The two I never got to were the last Faces concert at the Cleveland Stadium in 1975 (it was the day after we returned from vacation and my parents insisted I would be "too tired" to go -- Faces broke up right after that! >:( ) and Bruce Springsteen at the tiny Civic Theatre in Akron in 1975 (got in trouble and was not allowed to go -- so missed seeing Springsteen at a small gig before he was famous >:( )

First concert was Doobie Brothers at Seattles Key (then Seattle Center) Arena.  It was 1978.  Good show.
Damndest thing I saw a few years ago was visiting a friend in Ellensburg WA home of Central WA U. and playing at some old hotel venue was Blue Oyster Cult!  Desperate I guess and kind of sad that a headlining arena band was playing some cheesey hotel in cow-town.

Zella mentioned almost seeing Bruce before he was famous...that brought back some memories of seeing bands that are mega-famous now, that were just struggling opening acts in the day.I saw ZZ Top in '74 backing up Earth Wind and Fire and The Doobie Bros. They came out with no stage props or big laser light show. Just a wall of Marshalls behind them with Longhorn steer horns on top of the amps. The arena wasn't even full yet when the lights went down, the air got thick (if you know what I'm saying), and the MC said something like "Ladies and Gentlemen, that little ol' band from Texas!" and at that moment, we learned the meaning of the term BOOGIE!! Sometimes the best things DO come in small packages.

I was too young in the 70's sadly so the nearest  I got was seeing Dana and Freddie Garretty of Freddie And the Dreamers in Cinderella the panto!!!

On growing up I have seen Bowie both alone and with Tin Machine,The Spiders From Mars (Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey the originals, fronted by Joe Elliot and Phil Collen from Def Leppard they work 2gether under the name the Cybernauts these days), Suede and All About Eve, Colin Lloyd Tucker, Yellow Monkey, the Rats, Eddie and the Hotrods, Ian Hunter, Smokie and Paul Young (this year!!) I don't tink anything quite beat seeing my husband live playing Bowie's guitar and singing for Bowie's  old friends and fans new and old last December, I was that proud!!! Followed by All About Eve acoustic in 2000. Julieanne Regan has got the voice of an angel.

Well I'm going to go with the ones I dreamed of going to, because either I wasn't alive then, or I wasn't into the band then etc.

First of all, I would have loved to have gone to the Monterrey Pop Festival 1967.  The one where Bob Dylan was booed off the stage for debuting his electric stuff.  It also had great acts like the Byrds, the Animals, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, etc.  That would have been one hell of a concert.

Woodstock would have been phenomenal, but if I had to choose, it would have been the Monterrey Pop Festival.

Finally, I would have loved to have seen the Black Crowes circa 1993.  It would have been them touring after the release of Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, and maybe even debuting new songs to come from Amorica.

My God, all of those concerts would have been brilliant.

Please Note that I am perfectly aware that none of those concerts had anythihng to do with the 70s.   ;)

Has anyone ever heard of a band called ANGEL?  I seen them at a theatre in Hammond Indiana back in 1975 or 76.  They were so awesome. There was alot of magic in their show.

I loved Angel...I have a couple of their albums. My fave song was "Don't Leave Me Lonely"...Gregg Guiffria on keyboards....the best logo in rock n roll..it still said Angel if you turned it upside down.....very cool. They were featured in the movie "Foxes" with Jodie Foster and Cherie Currie, the original lead singer for The Runaways...

My fave shows I've been to? Bon Jovi at Giants Stadium, July 2001......amazing......

Even though I didn't attend these concerts in the 70's, I thought it was appropriate for this board....

I followed The Grateful Dead around for about two/three years back in the late 80's-early 90's.  My memories are a little fuzzy though!  :-/  Go figure  ;)

Also ranking highly in terms of memorable events, seeing Ben E. King perform at a private function in NYC in 1998.

I had that album as well (Cal. Jam II) I bet it was awsome being there. I've seen Aerosmith 5 or 6 times too. They kicked @ss every time except for once in Roanoke, Va. It was during the "toxic twins" days (or should I say DAZE). Steven Tyler was pissd at the stage sound (and really at life in general, I guess). He ended up throwing a monitor out into the crowd and stomping off stage after  25 minutes into the show. They made up for it (and then some) the last couple of times I saw them though.

Freddie, that's ablast from the past, I saw him on Hullabaloo, he was beserk, but I loved "I'm Telling You Now", all the chicks screamed when Freddie did "The Freddie!"  Wish I could have seen Bowie and the Spiders...

Anyways, I saw the Allman Bros in '69 at GA State U in the old city auditorium, pretty cool, but my fave concerts were, The Tubes, REM (1985) and Arlo Guthrie in '72.

I haven't been to too many concerts so I can list them all.

The Cowsills-1972 (?) Yeah, I know. I probably shouldn't admit that. That really dates me.

Debbie Boone/B.J. Thomas-1978 (?) Again, I probably shouldn't admit this one either. A friend wanted to go and didn't want to go alone-so I said, "what the heck." Had nothing better to do.

Blue Oyster Cult-1981  Not bad. It was a last minute decision to go. It was ok.

Loverboy/the Hooters-1986(?) I loved Loverboy. They were really good but the Hooters sucked.

Bob Dylan-1989 (in Greece) I wasn't impressed

Meatloaf-1993-GREAT!!!! EXCELLENT!!!! (need I say more?)

Jethro Tull-2003 I'll let you know in August when we go.  ;D

We do go see a local group called the Wood's Tea Company a lot. If they ever come to your area, I highly recomend seeing them. They put on a great show. They play a lot of Irish/folk music. I have seen other groups but no one any would know.

I'm not a Dylan fan, but this is the third time recently that I've heard something negative about his live performances. Two people I know saw Dylan in the last year, and said that didn't even address the audience during his show.

I wholeheartedly agree.
Spring of 1989 at a little club called Network (since razed to make room for a drugstore.. "paved pasadise and put up a parking lot..." but I digress) in Pasadena MD. My brother an I went to see Meatloaf. The roadies were putting terrycloth bath towels at various places onstage. He didn't understand and I explained that Meatloaf sweats profusely during the show. I can still remember my brother bitching, "11 bucks for a concert at Network, that fat f**ker better sweat his ass off". We weren't disappointed. The show was excellent. We were ten feet from the front, the sound was crystal clear and the music was awesome. I was stone cold sober and the rush from the music felt like a powerful high.

Some other great shows:
David Bowie and Jethro Tull - I've seen each six to eight times from the 70's to the 90's, always a great show musically and theatrically.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon tour 6-10-75 Capital Centre (recently razed, paved paradise, etc) Largo MD. They showed a rear-projection film synchronized with Breathe and Time that changed my preconceived ideas about the tunes.

Led Zeppelin 5-28-77 Largo MD. A friend camped out and scored five front-row seats. The show was great. Laser lightshows were pretty much unrestricted back then. I remember Jimmy Page playing Dazed & Confused within a pyramid of green laser with CO2 smoke hitting it, looking like food coloring drops in water from the Brownian effect. It was so cool.

Just reading this and lo and behold, a Dylan song just came on the radio, "You go your way and I'll go mine"!  It is outstanding, but it's from the 70s era when Dylan did legendary concerts.  Just saw Steve Forbert in a small venue, and he played sideways, I mean he stood vertical, but he wouldn't face the audience at all, he faced the wall, and also didn't address the audience, he sang and talked to the wall.  He sounded great, but it was bizarre that he played in that position.

This is my first time on this site, so I hope I'm doing this right. It's so cool to hear of someone else being at Cal Jam 2. In 1978 I was a Jr. in high school. I went to Cal Jam with a carload of girls. We left to go to the concert in the wee hours of the morning, when it was still dark outside. I remembered that Ted Nugent was there-from where we were he was just a small figure in white pants and lots of hair! And also Dave Mason. I remember he was there because one of my friends and I braved our way to as close to the front of the stage as we could get. We thought Ted Nugent was coming on next, alas it was Dave Mason. BIG dissapointment. thanks for jogging my memory as far as who else was there, and where it was. There were also a couple of other concerts featuring lots of different acts in the mid to late seventies. One was at Angel Stadium, I believe. Anyone remember anything about that?
BTW, my first concert was Black Oak Arkansas, at the Swing Auditorium, which has since burned down I'm told.

I definitely know where Norco is. I used to live in Fontana, but grew up in Rowland Heights. I don't remember where the Swing Auditorium was either. It was somewhere in the area of Riverside I believe, or in that part of California anyways.

When I was in high school we used to go to Gazarris all the time. They never carded you! It's not Gazarris anymore, but some other club is in it's spot. We used to go to all those clubs in Hollywood too and see up and comers like Van Halen and Motley Crue. We used to see Motley Crue walking around in the clubs with their hair in those big roosters, anyone remember that hairdo? And they'd have these coats called dusters on.

I think I went to my first concert in 1979...may have been 80. It still ranks as one of the best. It was Queen, in a tiny club in Tottenham, North London. They played 13 club dates for a laugh. Honestly - seeing then so close with the full Queen light extravaganza was just awesome..
