What is the worst song-EVER? My money would be on "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by William Shatner.

The worst song ever to be taken seriously at the time is easily Captain and Tenniles Muskrat Love. What were they thinking,  ??? what were we thinking ;)

"Jungle Fever" by Chakachas.  It's an instrumental.  The song itself is good, but every so often the music stops and a woman starts to moan.  They could do without the woman moaning.

"Wicked Game" - Chris Isaak (how in God's name did this loser get his own show??)

This is gonna be kinda tough, because when I think I know what the worst song is, another one comes along, or pops in my brain.
The worst I can think of right now is called "China Dolly". I had this on a 4-song EP called "Halmark". I don't know if this was the name of the record company or the group.
It was a country song that was some sort of ballad I guess. It sounded like they were making it up as they went along, but it was written by somebody, because the EP lists not only the songs, but the name and complete address of the people who wrote each song.
This song mentions China Polly, the China dolly as being "from beyond the Land of the Rising Sun". (That's Japan, you morons - oh, they said "beyond". Ok.) Some of the words are as follows:
What a gal,
My China Dolly!
On a fateful night
her lover was shot.
Oh, what a sight!
China Polly
Mounted him on her steed,
and vanished into the night.
Months & months she tended his wounds
with the odds of her land (?)
and finally he was in good health again.
Note only 1 rhyme in all of that (unless you want to count "land" and "again"). This song was truly horrible.
If there is possibly a worse song than this that comes to my mind, I'll mention it here.

I didn't get my name from Cat Stevens if that is what you mean. I do love his music though. My favorite is "Father and Son." My 7th grade English teacher introduced the song to us and I loved it ever since. Even though the gender is wrong-it does discribe the relationship between me and my parents when I was a teen.

Worst song EVER may be "MacArthur Park" the original.  Yes there was a thread about how it was a joke and all, but good God.  How awful!  Stupid lyrics, terrible vocalization (a medium-toned guy w/no singing talent about to cry?).  But I don't recall if that was '70s or '60s, so I can't say yet if it's worst of the '70s......

Just a quick note back to my answer of Muskrat Love.  I must have been about 10 years old and my mom was driving this Datson B210 with AM radio and Muskrat Love was playing on one of the 3 stations that came in.  My mom says to no one in particular "That is the stupidest song I've ever heard."  and changed the station.
I thank God that I was raised by an intelligent woman.

My list of worst songs include:

There's no one quite like granda, a horribly cute little girl sang that with a lisp

And something I think was alled Hey Hey Paul/Hey Hey Paula and was a sickley loveydovey duet

I'm only a poor little sparrow with feathers all tattered and brown , is another

Grandad by Clive Dunn.

There are probably more but they are the most memorable for being the worst!

Another song I can't hear without cringing is "Smoke on the Water." When I was a kid, we had a band who lived next door. That was the only song they knew how to play (or should I say knew how to massacre). Can't listen to it to this day.

As a teenager, I loved Springsteen. Yes, Darkness was his fourth album and I love that one, as well as the three earlier ones. He seemed to be able to capture a certain something that went way down into the depths of one's soul...

But after 4 albums, suddenly it all became like a formula IMHO. All the soulfulness was sucked out of his later music and it just seemed repetitive and mechanical. It may be an age thing too. Springsteen's songs seem very romantic when you are a teen, then when you suddenly find yourself a bit older and actually living in the world he sings about, it gets very old very fast... :P

....it ain't so teenage, anymore...

That said, I think the '4 album' rule applies to a lot of artists -- it is very difficult for music to sound fresh and innovative after #4 -- the formula thing kicks in! Some artists can manage to change and grow, but most cannot...

I could never listen to the Pschedelic Furs past their fourth album, nor Marianne Faithful either (and I had great admiration for her), nor Patti Smith, just to name a few.

I would be happy knowing I would never have to hear these monstrocities (sp?) of music for the rest of my life!  :P

"Fly Robin Fly" was by the Silver Convention.
"Wildfire" was by Michael Murphy, before he became country star Michael Martin Murphy in the 80's.

What number is Nebraska?  That's the only Boss CD I have, and I have to admit I like it a lot.  The early stuff was great, but not anything I really wanted to own.  I thought Nebraska was a tight concept album.

Some drek from Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids called "Did You Boogie With Your Baby...?" Truly awful. I can't believe our WHOLE 6th grade class got in trouble when someone stole that song.

Other bad songs:
Run Joey Run-David Geddes
Undercover Angel-Alan O'Day
Paper Roses-Marie Osmond
Arielle-Dean Friedman

My list of worst songs include:

There's no one quite like granda, a horribly cute little girl sang that with a lisp

And something I think was alled Hey Hey Paul/Hey Hey Paula and was a sickley loveydovey duet

I'm only a poor little sparrow with feathers all tattered and brown , is another

Grandad by Clive Dunn.

There are probably more but they are the most memorable for being the worst!
End Quote

Yep! You're talking about the British novelty record scene of the late seventies/very early eighties. 'There's no one quite like Grandma' is absolutely hideous!

'The Sparrow' by The Ramblers and 'Grandad' by Clive 'Dad's Army' Dunn were unique - and they were in my dad's record collection! ;D

I think you ought to add 'Ernie, the fastest milkman in the west' by Benny Hill to the list as well. Talking of novelty records, has anybody heard 'Daytrip to Bangor' by Fiddler's Dram - I think they only had the one hit.

Somebody mentioned 'Honey' by Bobby Goldsboro. Absolutely shocking! That man shouldn't have continued his career after that one.

As a footnote, 'Hey Hey Paula' was surprisingly written by 'Paul and Paula'.

I cannot stand, "The Edmund Fitzgerald."  That song bores me to death.  The song, "Bye Bye Miss American Pie" is another song I cannot stand.  That song is way too long!!!

I believe "American Pie" came out in 1972. Our Comp/Lit teacher in high school had us analyze the lyrics for the supposed "hidden meaning". She had an article that she showed us afterwards explaining what the words meant;

i.e, "Bye bye Miss American Pie" - name of the plane that Buddy Holly died in.
"The halftime air was sweet perfume" - tear gas at an anti-war rally
"Quartet practiced in the park" - Beatles reference
"I met a girl who sang the blues" - Janis Joplin
"And as I watched him on the stage, my hands were clenched in fists of rage" - Mick Jagger at Altamont

I remember reading about this on the net a few years back. Apparently, Don McLean denies putting any hidden meaning  the song.

Oh, I forgot to mention the "Worst Song". I think the "Circle Jerks" must have had this discussion before composing "Jerks-on-45 -- Golden Shower of Hits". They did a punk medley a-la "Stars-on-45" of some of the worst songs ever pressed on vinyl, including:
"Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band"
"Having My Baby - Paul Anka"
"Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain & Tennille"

Any of those tunes could have inspired Moon Zappa to quip, "Barf out... gag me with a spoon..."
