Subject: Need To ID This Early 70s Song!...

Written By: Hovav Frenkel on 03/02/03 at 11:12 p.m.

All,
This was an early 70s or perhaps late 60s song.  A male group or perhaps a male performer.  I heard this song twice, in 1972 and 1973.  The general sound was like early Rock'n'Roll.  "Rolling piano" was dominant, Jerry Lee
Lewis/Little Richard style.  To the best of my recollection, the opening line was something like "Jo Joanne is a girl for me, shoo be doo be pah, pah..."  And if my memory does not betrays me, the chorus ended up with the line "my Joanne is in
love with me."  I know it's not much, but perhaps someone can identify this performer/title of this song.
Thanks!
Hovav ::)

You're probably thinking of "Joanne" by Michael Nesmith, a moderate hit here in the U.S. in the Fall of '70. (Nesmith, of course, was a former member of The Monkees.) It was off his 1970 album, Magnetic South. Unfortunately, the album is long out-of-print, and has never been re-issued on CD here in the U.S...

No problem, but to be honest, the lyrics Hovav Frenkel quoted don't really match the Nesmith song - however, it does fall in the era he stated, and well, it has been over 32 years, lol...

"Joanne" is currently available on CD on a Nesmith hits collection, so I wouldn't think it should too hard to find on a file-sharing site...

Oh, and BTW, other songs to consider: "Jo-Ann" by The Playmates, a big hit here in the U.S. in the Winter of '58, and "Joanna" by Kool & the Gang, a big hit here in the U.S. in the Winter of '84... :-)
