Subject: I Want To Know, Again, Who Likes Disco? Faves?

Written By: Hairspray on 03/14/03 at 08:58 p.m.

Am I the only one who still enjoys Disco?

I know there are some of you who do, actually. I just want to gage if there has been any change since the last time we did this.

Go to town!  :D 8) :D

I'll start with:

Disco Inferno by The Trammps

I hated it at the time, but perhaps I am mellowing in my old(er) age.....

It doesn't seem anywhere near as bad now....

I will put my mind to any particular faves and respond later  ;)

I wasn't a big fan of disco at the time, but I watched Bill Murrays Meatballs lately, and heard the song "Makin' It", did make me feel a bit nostalgic. Anybody for the hustle?  ;D :D

I love love love Disco!  I love the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, The Trammps, Ohio Players, KC & the Sunshine Band, Chic and so many more!  I am also a big fan of "Funkadelic" too.

When I go to clubs, I would much rather dance to disco than rap or techno!  And if you ever go to a city that has a "Polly Esters" (it's a chain of dance clubs) GO THERE!  The one here in DC is so fly!  Even has a replica of the dancefloor in Sat. Night Fever.  And yes I do dress in my finest disco 70's attire when I go! ;)  I just wish I could have been around for Studio 54.  :(

I sort of didn't like it back in the day but now it brings back memories.  I have the "Pure Disco" and "Pure Disco 2" CD's as well as the single-disc release of the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack CD…

Playing in a southern rock band in the 70's made me a true soldier in the "Disco SUX" army. But like Fuss said, maybe I'm mellowing out in my twilight years ::) or maybe it's just that when I hear "Boogie Ooogie Ooogie" or "Dancing Queen", it takes me back. I have to admit, although I would have been burned at the stake if my "biker buds" and "hippie pals" had found out about it, I was a closet KC and the Sunshine Band fan, and I used to ROCK to "Play That Funky Music White Boy".

I do.

I think 'Spray's covered the essential list, sans Foxy's "Get Off."  ;)

We used to have a club called Have A Nice Day Café that was strictly disco.  Tons of fun.  And I used to go to trash disco night at Nettwerk (? or whatever it was called at the time) in Dallas all the time.

I'd rather go out dancing to a club that plays house or disco versus hip-hop.  And most gay dance clubs have the best music to dance to; I've always had a great time at those clubs.

I'll admit that I have most of these songs on various compilation albums.  ;D ;)

Because I grew up with older brothers who played rock music (and despised disco), I was also influenced in that direction.  While I always loved The Bee Gees, I didn't really develop an appreciation for disco until I was an adult and started to collect music.

Like any other music genre, there was good disco, and bad disco. IMO, the majority of it was good, although by 1978-79, its overwhelming popularity had forced it to become quite derivative. This is my chronological list of the better ones, followed by their peak position on the pop chart here in the U.S. Those in bold would be my personal top 40 picks to burn onto two "ultimate disco" CD-R's, similar to what Jonman just did. (I intentionally avoided predominantly funk artists such as the Ohio Players, Bar-Kays, Brothers Johnson, Rick James, etc., since that's a whole other list!) And while compiling this list, I also made a top 10 "disco hall of shame", lol:

01) I'm almost shocked you think that song belongs here. It is an icon to the Disco era.

02) I never figured it to be a Disco song, nor would I personally consider it to be.

The list wasn't based on critical acclaim or "icon" status; heck, the same is often said of #7 as well. Just my personal taste, and nothing more. If you like any or all of them, great - considering that most were top 20 hits, somebody must've enjoyed 'em. :-) And truth be told, I do happen to like most of Rick Dees' '80s songs & comedy, and some Barry Manilow tunes as well - just not the ones I put on the list. And your list of 10 worst disco songs would be...?

Quoting:02) I never figured it to be a Disco song, nor would I personally consider it to be.

Yes, I agree that one is a stretch, but I have seen it included on disco compilations in the past...

Funny that my favourite Disco artist is Jean-Marc Cerrone who kept on cranking out Disco music way into the 80s (at least the music I like by him came out in the 80s).

Magazine 60? That was 1985 :) :D ;D I still like 70s Disco, I just can't name names as easily. I really like the sound of "More, More, More" though... really soothing and lurid 8)

How can you possibly classify this as a disco tune?  :o It's a classic rock song if I've ever heard one!!!

There are others you mentioned that I would hardly consider to be "disco".  This makes me wonder if you based your list on the years that disco was prevelant or if you actually went by the style of music...

I assume you're referring to such songs on my list as "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones, "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" by Rod Stewart, "Heart of Glass" and "Call Me" by Blondie, and "I Was Made for Lovin' You" by Kiss, in addition to the ELO tunes. If so, while it's true that none of those acts specialized in disco - and are generally associated w/ other music genres - they were clearly influenced by the movement (and their record cos.?), and thus recorded the very disco-leaning songs named, for the sake of keeping their careers alive. So yes, believe it or not, those specific songs are all generally considered disco... :-)

I'll say it again, you can argue "this is disco" or "that is R&R" until the cows come home. Just another example of why putting labels and catorgorizing types of music is ludicrous.

Agreed. When I was growing up, we didn't say, "This is hard rock; this is pop; this is disco; this is new-wave...", etc. We just called it all "rock".

I must agree here. These groups were, indeed, influenced by Disco and some even felt they had to in order to compete. Those were very good examples, by the way.
