Subject: Deliverance

Written By: karen (Guest) on 04/01/03 at 07:47 a.m.

I'm not sure if this is the right board for this because I don't know what year the film came out.

Anyway the other day I caught part of the film Deliverance on TV.  I've only ever seen the same clip.  It's the bit in the woods where they are attacked and eventually someone gets shot with a bow and arrow.

It started hubby and I talking about the guitar music one of the characters plays.  We both thought that it came from an earlier, possibly Western, film.  I think the music is called Battling Banjoes or possibly Duelling Banjoes.  Hubby thinks its called Deliverance.  Does anyone here know a) the proper title of the music and b) what other film (if at all) it is from.

Hi karen!

I can confirm the song is called "Duelling Banjo's". I have no idea what other film it was in although I have a picture of it in my mind being played in a somewhat slapstick kind of situation, like maybe Smokey and the Bandit or something...

I was so tempted to say to Ned this morning, "Squeal like a pig!"  But I didn't want to get fired.

That movie sat us in the south back 100 years in trying to convince the rest of the country that we weren't all backwoods, toothless, holler dwellin', yahoos. I'd like to have a dollar for every time that someone up north (I'm not using the "Y" word ;)) heard my accent and either started to "sing" Dueling Banjos or yelled out "Squeal like a pig!!" ;D

So am I right in thinking that somewhere in this film is a scene of two people playing this as a duel?  I get a mental picture of an old guy in a straw hat being one of the players.  I just don't remember ever watching the film in full.

What year did the film come out?  And was the music ever released as a single?  I'm thinking that perhaps I saw the film clip on Top of the Pops or something.

Hi karen

Glad to help.  The name of the tune is indeed "Duelling Banjos" and according to my records at least, was performed by Steve Mandell and Eric Weissberg.

IMNSHO, the only decent thing Burt Reynolds ever did !

In later movies, I would have paid good money to see him take the arrow !

Here is a little reminder :

I love that movie but there is no way in hell I am ever going canoeing now !  :-/

Some other interesting info :

This was Ned Beatty's first movie and it haunts him to this day. According to Reynolds in an interview, the scene was shot with five cameras in one take, which is a good thing, because it's doubtful if Beatty would have done a second take.

Much of the dialogue in that scene was ad-libbed. The actors worked without insurance because no company would insure them because of the kinds of risks they were taking.

I just wanna know why they can show dreck on TV in prime time, but excellent films like this and the original "King Kong" get buried in post-midnight time slots! This was on at 1.30 in the morning last week.

Gore

You should move to the UK  I'm not quite sure what time Deliverance started but I think it was probably 10.00 or may be 10.30.  Channel 5 shows some excellent films.

I watched Deliverance on TV the other night. The scene with the duelling banjos is actually one guitar played by one of the canoeing party (actor Ronnie Cox, later of Robocop fame) and a banjo played by a young "mountain" boy who looks like he is supposed to be mentally subnormal. He never speaks, just plays the banjo. He grins while playing the banjo but otherwise looks hostile and a bit sinister.

I remember once I boarded a plane and they were piping "Duelling Banjos" over the muzak system...I didn't think it was a very appropriate or comforting choice of music!

Maddog
My dictionary says either spelling is o.k.  ( Which makes me feel better given that I used -oes throughout my first post)

Thanks to everyone who replied to this post.  I didn't expect it to generate so much interest
