Subject: GUILTY PLEASURES--Singer(s)

Written By: KtelChick on 04/11/03 at 11:33 a.m.

So, is there a "guilty pleasure" 70's singer that you know you'll catch h*ll for if you admit (out loud) that you like??

I feel the need to purge ("give her room, she's about to blow!!!").  I must come clean and admit this (for the first time):

TOM JONES does it for me!  There, the deed is done...the burden lifted.

So fess up, what 70's era singer do you secretly like to listen to?  Your secret is safe with us (hee-hee).

hmmmm, I would have to say Barry Manilow & Neil Diamond.  I have an immediate meltdown whenever I hear "Weekend In New England" or anything off "The Jazz Singer" album.  ::)

I LOVE the Jazz Singer (was just watching it the other day).

I really hate to say this (don't even want to admit it to myself) but Ed Ames. My mother had just about every album that the dude recorded-and believe me, he recorded quite a bit. I like to cringe when I hear the name only because that was what my mother listened to ALL THE TIME. But, I confess,  I used to borrow my mother's records and listened to them. There were a few songs that he sang that I really did like. Don't have any at the moment so maybe that is a good thing.  :-/

It would have to be all of the following:

The Carpenters
Air Supply
Neil Diamond
Barry Manilow
Crystal Gayle

Manilow's song Copacabana has to be one of the coolest ever.  If that song doesn't make you want to get up to dance and shake your a$$, something's wrong.

I have a couple guilty pleasures from the 70s:

Tom Jones
Fifth Dimension (That "Aquarius" is irresistable)
That "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" dude
Burt Bacharach
Barry Manilow
Carpenters (a little bit)
Jim Croce
Styx (Their ballads were kinda cheesy when Dennis sang them, but they are one of my fave bands!!)

Carpenters definitely for me...Karen had one of the best and most distinctive voices of all (and I do mean all) time...

I like Carly Simon too.

I did own a Barry Manilow album in high school...but I kept it in back of my collection away from all my rock-n-roll...didn't want Barry to get "infected"... :P
