Subject: What year epitomized the 70's??

Written By: Helpinghand on 04/21/03 at 02:33 p.m.

I am a  baby of the 70s (literally, born in 1977 lol)..so I don't have too much info firsthand of the 1970s..so to those who trully lived the 70s in some way (mostly people age 35+ now I'd assume)..what was the year that was most "70ish"?? Obviously the decade changed a lot between 1/1/70 and 12/31/79..but when you think "seventies", which year do you think of most. Many say mid or late 70s rather than early 70s (since Vietnam, pop culture were still rather 60s until 73 or so). Very curious here!

This is certainly a very difficult question to answer. No one year epitomizes any decade.A decade is more like an evolution. But for me, when I think of the seventies, I think of the early seventies.Perhaps it's my love for the 60s that causes me to  focus so much on 1970-1974.

I was 11 in 1970 and 15 in 1974.Certain music and certain fashion really spark memories for me.I graduated high school the year you were born LOL ! ;D

The late 70s didn't really stand out too much for me. I remember Saturday Night Fever epitomizing the late seventies, though. Disco, short hair on guys, polyester shirts and (gulp) gauchos, tube tops and pucca shell necklaces.

I think the answer to this question is subjective for each individual. For me, when I think of the 70's, I remember the music & style of the era and the entertainment aspects of it more than anything else. My memories lie within the latter part of the decade. I certainly didn't pay attention to politics, world news or much else. As much as I loved the Rock music of the time, mostly what stands out for me in memory, music-wise, is Disco music. I loved it too; Just like with clothes and style, mostly what stands out for me are things like polyester, bell bottoms, plattform shoes, sideburns and afros. Granted Glam Rock was also "in" and held a similar radiance to the styles of club-goers hitting Studio 54 and similar Disco dance clubs.

So....

To finally answer your question, IMO, the year was

For me the year was 1977. I turned 11 that year. We lost Freddie Prinze, Elvis, and Bing Crosby that year. Star Wars arrived in theaters in May, Billy Joel released "The Stranger" and Eddie Money's debut album was released.

For me it was 1975...I was 11 that summer...Canadian bands topped our local radio...Trooper with "Two For The Show", April Wine with "Tonight Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love", Sweeney Todd with "Roxy Roller"...I went to my first concert (April Wine w/guest Heart)...I lived at the local pool and when I wasn't there I was at the lake...I joined the water-ski team...And then there was Verna...I'll never forget Verna...*sigh*

It was 1975 for me also. It was the year I met my future husband. I was 14 yrs old and life was good. I went roller skating every Friday and Saturday night. My favorite song " Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen was going strong. All I had to worry about were zits and keeping my hair shiny clean, ah those were the days before I had my own kids and bills, bills, bills. I don't know how anyone else here feels about the 70's but oh how I would love to go back for a week and relive some of those good times.

That's funny how around 1992 that song was again popular with people BORN around that era with the Wayne's World  movie..my lil sister who was only 12 when the movie came out thought Bohemian Rhapsody was a NEW 1992 song, lol..

I gotta tell ya, personally, as a child of the '70's, all of those crazy years still hold a place in my heart.  Even though I graduated high school in '79, the period between '74-'79 had the biggest impact in my life and epitomized the decade for me.  We're talking music, fashion, friendships, first loves...wow I'm gettin' all misty thinkin' about those years ! (grin).

Having been born in the second half of the 60's, I was around for the whole 1970's decade.  For me, the year that stood out the most would probably be 1978.

Here's why:

~The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack was huge and the Bee Gees were heard everywhere!  :D

~Grease also hit the theaters, and along with it we got another great soundtrack!

~Al Stewart and Gerry Rafferty were having successful solo careers.

I have to go for

1977
why?

- The Clash and The Sex Pistols
- Teddy Boys and punk rockers fighting on the streets of London
- getting in to see Rollerball and Tommy at the cinema
- copping off with a girl from the Catholic school at a party
- arguing with my parents about the music being played on the radio
- buying a crappy old bass guitar and WEM amp and forming a (terrible) band with my mates
- working on the ice-cream stand at the outdoor swimming pool in the summer and watching all the girls
- basically, being 14 years old....

1976 also had one little even you might remember, the US Bi-Centinnial.  I was 10 and remember it well, it was the last year my father was in the Army before retiring at 37 (my age now :-/).  I remeber the '76 quarters and and lots of specials on TV.

I was born in 1976.  When I want to get a perspective of what kids born in the 80's think of us 70's babies, I just read a thread like this, and start remembering what I used to think of you guys born in the 60's and raised in the 70's/early 80's.

For me, it was 1976.  It was the bicentennial.  The fashions, the music, the trends.  Not a lot of 60s influence left and the things of the 80s had not come to the forefront yet.

I would have to say although I like all the years from this decade,1976 was my favorite. I guess you could say that it was the first official year of my childhood, since it is the year that I started remembering things more clearly (I was born in '68,and can actually vaguely remember things that happened to me and my family in '71,and '72). I guess I remember too much?  :-[By 1976,our culture was assuming an uniquely '70's atmosphere since the earlier years of this decade were still in the same vein as the '60's,and by '79,the 80's were around the corner, and as we know, things would never be the same! LOL!  I remember the Bi-centenial spirit going through the country that year, the CB radio craze, the war in Vietnam coming to an official end,the rise of Disco, and Jimmy Carter running for President. Speaking of the bi-centenial,does anybody remember those short vignettes that were shown on tv, featuring celebrities talking about the history of the USA? I think they were called "Bi-centenial Minutes". ??? Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

I'll go with Stevie's vote for 1976.  You still had an appreciable holdover of the hippie '60s peace & love AND the cocaine hedonism of disco was just coming in.
Not to mention the bicentennial hoopla.

I was seven and had to learn what a bicentennial was!  My most vivid memory of Independence Day (and I do call it Independence Day, I don't like this "Fourth of July" nonsense) 1976 is rather gross.

At our big holiday breakfast I gorged myself on toast and strawberry jam.  Just as the parade started, I started feeling queeeezy.  I vomited projectile-fashion a strawberry colored torrent which managed to work its way across the narrow main street of our quaint NH town!
:-[
I wonder if that was a prescient suggestion about my future sense of patriotism. ???

The '70s was definitely a split decade.  The first half was basically Part 2 or a mainstream version of the late '60s.  Remember, in 1969 only a small percentage of people actually looked like Hippies.  Most guys in 1969 still had short hair!  So I give the '70s just as much credit for that Vietnam Era as the '60s.  Even when Vietnam slowed down, it was quickly replaced with Watergate, the Woman's Movement, Inflation, Forced Busing, and tons of other social/political issues equal to the much overrated '60s.  All that crazy chaos back then straddled both decades.

The late '70s, however, was in its own world with Corporate Rock, Disco, hedonism, the Me-Generation, Carter, Punk, more inflation, No-Nukes Movement, etc., etc. and finally, Music Videos (remember HBO's Video Jukebox?), New Wave, and even Rap began in the late '70s.  So the late '70s was almost a springboard to the '80s.

Right smack in the middle of the decade (1975) was the transition.  I entered High School in 1975, and that year seemed to hold a little bit of each quality during the entire decade.  Still some political chaos, but yet some withdrawing into superficial realms like Hot Tub parties and Coke infested Discos.  So I think 1975 accurately reflects ALL that the '70s had to offer.  A little bit Disco, a little bit Country, a little bit Classic Rock, a little bit Soft Rock, a little bit Glam Rock, etc. So to answer your question, 1975 epitomized that very confusing decade of extremes!

Depends on where you were.  In the urban and urbane areas, such as the Bay area, L.A., Boston, NYC, Chicago, hippies were just part of the landscape in 1969.  In rural America, say, Alabama, west Kansas, Montana, or Utah, the hippie thing was both rare and unwelcome.  Think "Easy Rider."  In 1969 America was not as pop-culturally integrated via mass media as it is now.  In 1979, nobody but a Klansman had a problem with a guy having a ponytail.
I found it sickening the way the bikers were rallying around the Bush administration's war in Iraq.  Ronald Reagan considered bikers and hippies alike social excrement.  Today, as then, the interests of no genuine biker are served by corporate conservatism.  Even Harley Davidson is betraying its legacy.  The bikers rallied with the Right with the intention of supporting soldiers and veterans.  This shows how suckered they've been by Republican rhetoric.  The Bush administration is pro-Pentagon, and pro-corporate defense contractor.  They've proven they don't give a crap about the soldiers or the veterans.
Anyway, we have to bear in mind that the countercultural movement was revolutionary.  That is, it arose suddenly in the mid-60s on college campuses and in cultural centers.  It's no surprise that it took until the early '70s to realize its pop-culture potential.
In 1979, there were no U.S. suburban high school kids with mohawks.  Punk and new wave reached its American zenith in the early to mid-'80s, whereas it exploded in London, NYC, and L.A. in the mid-'70s.
