Subject: Help- Japanese Monsters

I have been trying to remember a saturday morning show I used to watch sometime in the mid to early 70's.
It resembled the Godzilla genre somewhat, but it was on every saturday morning. It was a "real" show, and not a cartoon. I think it centered around some kind of robot, which was human sized when at rest, but when the city/country was threatened by some sort of monster it would grow huge and fight off the monsters.
I've been trying to remember this for years... no one I know remebers this at all, including my brother/sisters.
Please help!!! I know I am not insane, well maybe just a little.

Are you thinking of Ultraman? He had a big jewel on his chest that would blink when he ran out of energy from being on earth too long
