I know this is easier said than done but try to relax. I tried out for a musical in jr. high and we all had to sing "My Country Tis of Thee." I couldn't understand why everyone was laughing while I was singing. I didn't realize that I seem to have set the speed record for singing the song. I was so nervious and didn't noticed I was singing VERY FAST! Just TRY to relax and give it your best. Break a leg!  ;D

Thanks for the advice.  I recently played sarah brown in Guys and Dolls and I take voice lessons and have been learning the songs from Grease, so hopefully I will do ok.  If you have any more advice for me, I would really appreciate it, especially on how to play the role of Sandy in the best possible way!  8)

In the play, Sandy was NOT from Australia. They only did that in the movie for Olivia Newton John. I have studied acting and it is best not to "imitate" other actors-make the role your own.

As a fellow actor, all I can say is break a leg! If this director cast you as Sarah Brown then he/she obviously knows your talent...take advantage of that! I wouldn't sing a song from Grease unless they ask for it. Director's like to hear you sing and think "she'd sound great singing Hopelessy Devoted To You"...and don't sing anything from G&D b/c he/she obviously knows that you can...find a nice 50s song along the same lines as Hopelessly Devoted and do that.

My advice for what it's worth ;D

I agree that I should not try to imitate Olivia Newton-John, but what r some things that I should be aware about for the part of SandY?

Our director has a certain way of running audtions, and he never has us do a prepared song, unfortunately.  He will have everyone sing a part from a song from the show.  But I have a question for you? Hopelessly Devoted To You isn't in the stage version of Grease, is it?  I thought that I read somewhere that is was and you are telling me to sing a song similar to it, so I am really confused!  ???

I agree with Cat, here. I studied  with an actress who was in the original production of "Grease" on Broadway. She said that, during the duration of the run, the cast all switched roles and everyone got to play one role or another during the first run of that show. If your're an actor, you can create your version of the part . :)

Best wishes on your audition ! Do post us how it went !

Well, the one thing I can say is that you mention a vital bit of info in your post - THE DIRECTOR KNOWS YOU. Pretty much a biggie in your favor ! ;)

I auditioned for "Grease" (nonEquity version) in 1980 in Northern CA. I was stupid to audition because I can't dance  :(

I sang two songs - we had to sing an upbeat and a ballad -can't remember what ballad I sang, but I sang "Georgy Girl". I hated myself during the dance part - can't follow choreography-ugh !(I am a Rizzo type, by the way) I keep telling myself that Rosie O'Donnel can't sing or dance but she was IN a BROADWAY production of Grease.

Just try to have fun with it. The thing I liked most about auditions was the social chit chat aspect of it.

No, "Hopelessly Devoted To You" (along with "You're the One that I Want") is NOT in the play. Again, they added that for ONJ. Sandy doesn't have too many solo songs in the play. If you get to choose which song you get to sing, I would have to say, "Raining on Prom Night." If I were trying out and got to choose, I would pick "There are Worse Things I Could Do" only because I would be trying out for Rizzo.  ;) Keep us informed.  ;D

(I could prob also be the one who goes to beauty school- the drop out...)

I would sing "There Are Worse Things I could Do" , also.

In my college voice class, for my first/introduction solo , I sang "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" with much success.Ah, nice memories . Have you found the book (script) in the library ? When I was in college, a friend had the book (from a library) and we used to cold read from it.

I'll try and search for the script in the library, but I doubt that I'll find it.  I have a copy of "There ARe Worse Things I Could Do" in my broadway voice book, but I think that it is lower than the one they would actually use on stage and it is too low for me to sing. but, I can sing along w/ the one on cd pretty easily. I would like to play Rizzo too, but I have a feeling that I would probably make a better Sandy....... :P

Well, we don't get to try out for specific parts--we try out "generally" but usually get to write down if we wish to play a specific part.  I dont really like the song "Raining on Prom Night" that much but I really like the song "Summer Nights".  I would like to play Rizzo too, but I'm afraid that some of her songs may be too low for me and I think that I would prob. make a better sandy....... ;D

Hey there Goofygirl!  Best of luck with your audition.  I have seen a touring production of Grease that did do the songs from the movie too.  But it is true that the original musical didnt have some of the songs from the movie.  HOWEVER, if you can sing one of the movie songs pretty well, then use that as your audition song, even if you dont get to sing it in the actual production.                                                                             You know, back in the early 80s my high school did Grease for our annual musical, and believe it or not, I auditioned for-and LANDED- the part of Patty Simcox!  And being a guy made it all the more fun.  I got great reviews too!  I think I may have been one of a handful (if not the only one) males to ever play that role!  It was a blast and I wish you best of luck again with your audition as Sandy! :)

HI! I was thinking, maybe there is a new "version" of Grease out that contains some of the songs from the movie, b/c I know that there is a version of Les Mis made especially for high schools.  I just really like the songs "You're The One That I Want" and "Hopelessly Devoted To You."  Oh well, at least Summer Nights is still in there!  :) So what was your name when you played Patty Simcox? Were you supposed to be a male cheerleader or something?  I just think that that is so funny, but I supppose that it works out!  :D

Well I WAS Patty in our production of Grease!.No other changes.  I wore a wig and all the costumes that you would see Patty wore. (Yes it was a "drag" role I guess!)  Actually, a couple years before that a girl played the lead role in "Oliver", so it isnt that unusual to play the parts of opposite genders.  (Peter Pan comes to mind too)  Anyway, I got to wear a cheerleading uniform, poodle skirt and pouffy party dress...It was lots of fun!   I made a goofy yet likeable Patty from what my friends and others who saw the play told me.  (And I DIDNT have to kiss Eugene at all!!)

A couple of years ago at our local college, a woman played the part of Falstaff in the "Merry Wives of Winsor." She wore a fake beard and mustash and did an excellent job. I had to keep reminding myself that it was a female doing the role. Of course in Shakespeare's time, ALL the actors were male doing ALL the roles.

Hey, I think that that is so cool! Honestly!  Just unusual I guess, but not really, I just haven't seen it that much!  I was in Guys and Dolls (as Sarah Brown) recently and I had a friend who was also Sarah in her high school's production, and they had a girl play "Arvida" instead of Arvide.  Sometimes changing characters like that improves the play!  So......do you like playing the part of a girl, esp. a cheerleader! haha!  ;)

Yes, I really enjoyed playing the part of Patty!  I have always been a big fan of Grease and always thought that Patty would be a fun character to do, so when the opportunity came up to audition for that part, I jumped at it.  She is still the only female character Ive ever played on stage, and I would do it again if the right opportunity came up.  Yes, the cheerleading costume was fun, but remember, the skirts werent as short as they are today.  My Patty cheerleading uniform had a red and white pleated knee length skirt and a plain white sweater with a big red "R" on the front.  Not as fancy and short as the uniforms today!  But still fun!  I also wore the party dress from the sockhop scene to the cast party after the final production.  I should dig up my photos from then and post em!  LOL  ANYWAY Goofygal, keep us all posted on your audition and heres hoping you land your star part!

Hi everyone!  Well, tryouts for Grease on on June 4 and 5.  I found out that we can come with a prepared song, which is good.  However, I don't have a copy of any song from Grease, except for "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" which is a really low version of the song, and too low for me to sing.  However I have worked on the songs "I Could Have Danced All Night" "In My Own Little Corner" "Think of Me" etc.  Would any of those be good for me to sing?  Just wondering, and thanks!  ;D 8) ::)

They all sound good. I would pick the one you are most comfortable singing. If "Think of Me" is the one I am thinking of (from Phantom) you must be a saprano because I can't hit most of those notes in that song. Break a leg and let us know how it goes.

Hi everybody!  ;) Well, I tryed out for Grease last Wed. and just found out the results yesterday (Fri.) Well..........I didn't get the part of Sandy, but I got the part of Jan!  I am excited though, b/c I get to play a charcter role and playing Sandy would have been too similar to playing Sarah Brown, my most recent role in Guys and Dolls, and it wouldn't have been that challenging.  I think that it will be good experience for me to play a "funny" role for once.  :D By the way, did I mention that I will be majoring in theatrea and minoring in music in college?  Just thought I'd mention it!  ;) Anyways, if anyone has any advice, comments, hints, or whatever on Grease or the part of Jan, etc. let me know!

Just a side note on the subject of Grease...  On Friday, June 20 I went to see Olivia Newton-John in concert in Wisconsin.  She performed all of her great hits, incl. three songs from Grease, and was amazing!  She still looks gorgeous and was charming and can still sing as great as she ever has. I got to go up to the stage and shake her hand, it was an amazing night!  If anybody gets the chance to catch her show on this tour, dont pass it up!

I like Xanadu. Of course I LOVE Gene Kelly and it doesn't matter what he was in. Just to watch him.

Hi! I've been meaning to post a message, but I've been so busy w/ work and college coming up and stuff.  OUr show went good, it was from July 24, 25 and 26 at 7 pm.  We did some different things in our show.  We added the songs "Hopelessly Devoted to u" and replaced "All Choked UP" with "ur the one that I want" and we also didn't do the song "Rock and Roll Party Queen".  On costumes....well, we had our pink lady jackets of course, and we wore white shirts w/ them and jean capris and funny glasses and whites shoes and socks.....the other gurls in the chorus wore poodle skirts.  the guys wore like leather jackets and jeans and stuff....and we work our pajamas at the slumber party......and dresses at the dance......i dunno, what else do u want to know? any questions, just ask!! bye!!!

That is all that matters-if you had fun. When it stops being fun, then it is time to do something else.

No, I have never heard of that musical (and I thought that I knew them all-at least most of them).
