Subject: Joni Mitchell fadaway...

Hi all, please write your favorite Joni songs, memories, etc.  I recently bought the 1975 album on disc (with the snake on the cover), it's still beautiful, good songs, Joni's lovely voice.  Also just bought a 1994 album, her voice is not actually gone, but not the same, and the songs are not as good as the 70s ones.  Oh well, what do you all think?

bj...don't do that! I thought from the subject title that she'd passed away or something...!

"Chelsea Morning" is the one I go for - marvellous song...I don't really have much memory of her (she rarely crops up on any sort of TV here, either), but, from what I've heard, a great performer nonetheless...

I think I recently read somewhere that she intends not to record any further material (something to do with the hypocrisy of the record labels - her words not mine) which is a bit of a loss...

As you can see from my signature, "A Case of You" is my favorite.  I cry every time I hear it.

I think my fave Joni song is "This Flight Tonight" however I much prefer the version by Nazareth :)

I prefer her version of "Big Yellow Taxi" though...

Joni was recently awarded a special achievement award by the Society of Composers and Authors of Canada (SOCAN) "for bringing international recognition to Canada through her music over the course of her career". Here is a quote:

"I always thought of myself first as a painter," said Mitchell, on accepting her award. "But in terms of writing lyrics, generally I would write comedy for my peers and serious things privately. If someone committed suicide, as a friend did when I was in high school, I would write privately about it and not show it to anybody...From the beginning I've said I'm getting out of this business, and I've said that recently, but I'm still here!"

I sincerely hope that's so, Jonman...I did manage to find my bit of doom-and-gloom news - this was reported in Record Collector Issue #281, January 2003...

...Joni Mitchell has announced that her recent double-album "Travelogue", is the last she will ever record, citing the current state and hypocracy of the music industry (not labels as I said) as the reason for her decision...

...and that was it - four lines long!

But if she says she's keeping on, who am I to disagree?

Regards...

Paul, my story originated in the official SOCAN magazine Words & Music and the awards ceremony was on November 18, 2002 when she gave that quote...right after Travelogue was released here in Canada.

I guess we wait and see what Joni does...
