Nobody Does It Better...than the BBC? Who are they trying to kid?!!

Devaraj, I'm pleased to say that a good proportion of Carly's work is still available - suffice to say, start with a Greatest Hits and work from there...I would imagine there'll be some input to this question, so just pick it up as we go along...

My personal preference is one of her earliest successes, "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" - a beautiful song with incredible dynamics...

I've always liked "You're So Vain". Any song that rhymes the words 'yacht' and 'apricot' has just gotta rule.  :)

...and then effortlessly slipping in "gavotte" - that's gotta be some kind of genius!

She also did the 80s hit 'Why' and was also vocals on the Will Power's hit 'Kissing with Confidence' (anybody heard this song? I get the feeling it is parodying the keep fit videos of the early eighties.

Gawd yes - remember that! That (I think) was Lynn Goldsmith with a voice synthesiser making her sound like a man (well, that was the gimmick, anyway..) - still got the thing stashed away somewheres - not only Carly, but I think Todd Rundgren and Stevie Winwood are in action on there somewhere...

You're right Paul UK, Lynn Goldsmith was the voice. Wow! I didn't know Steve Winwood was involved in it as well. I liked that song.

Did 'Will Powers' have any more hits?

Carly Simon is a wonderful artist.  I also have her greatest hits collection and would highly recommend it.

Here are a couple of facts about Carly:

~She was married to folk singer James Taylor for a time and they have 2 kids.  Their son, Ben, is also a recording artist and has toured with his dad.

~She hails from New York and is the daughter of one of the co-founders for Simon & Schuster publishing company.

I just heard "jesse" and "haven't got time for the pain" , thought both of them were real good.."jesse" sounds familiar though..don't know why.. ???
Do keep the suggestions coming...I'll check out the ones mentioned above...

No, that was it...over here at any rate, though (and I should be shot for knowing this!) the follow-up "Adventures In Success" was big in clubs...I think Ms Goldsmith went back to photographing the stars afterwards, instead of being one...

Back to Carly - and I'm pleased to see that she's more or less OK after her recent breast cancer ordeal...long may she continue recording...

a few years ago, I learned that her song Anticipation was
written while she waited for her date who happened to be another great singer/songwriter, Cat Stevens.

My favorite Carly Simon song has to be "That's the Way I Always Thought it Should Be." I love that song.

That's another good one, lebeiw. :) Carly is better known for her music from the 70's, and I believe "Coming Around Again" came out in the late 80's.

Carly Simon's song "Your Are So Vain" is included in the movie "How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days"  starring Kate Hudson and Mattheew McConaghey

I watched the movie partly because of the song featured in the trailers for the movie..

She wasreally great in the 70s and had some soulful hits then.  In the late 60s she was in a duo with her sister called the Simon Sisters and they sang "Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod."  In her 70s group her bass player was Klaus Voorman of Trio, remember "Da Da Da?"

I certainly do know of Trio. They used a very small keyboard that gave a very tinny beat. 'Da Da Da' was their only hit (in Britain at least).

I kinda liked "Da Da Da", ha ha ha, one keyboard, yes it was a funky "tinny" sound - early New Wave techno pop!  I met Klaus Voorman in St. Lucia a few years ago, he had a cute Brazilian wife and a 1 year old kid, nice guy.

A personal favorite of mine has always been "Tired of Being Blonde", a minor hit for her here in the U.S. in the Summer of '85. It's a very uptempo song, and a bit different from most of her usual material. It was off her 1985 album, Spoiled Girl, her only one for the Epic label...

Like Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon has always suffered from stage fright, so she rarely gives live performances or makes special appearances. But in the Fall of '95, she was brave enough to appear at an in-store signing just outside of NYC for her then-new box set, Clouds in My Coffee: 1965-1995. So having always been a fan, and w/ the store being only about a half-hour away, I knew I wasn't going to miss the opportunity! Of course, I bought my own copy of the box set at the store that day, but was a little disappointed to see that "Tired of Being Blonde" wasn't among the 58 songs included. :( So when it was finally my turn to meet her, I asked her why the song was missing, and told her how much I liked it. She immediately laughed, turned a bit red, and looked over at the man seated at the table beside her (who I believe was her manager). She then said to me, "Wow! You're about the only one!" Ah well, guess it's not one of the ones she wants to be remembered for, lol! But she happily signed my box set for me anyway... :)

My top 5 CS songs:

01) "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be"
02) "You're So Vain"
03) "Tired of Being Blonde"
04) "You Belong to Me"
05) "Coming Around Again"
