Subject: Song that Touches You

Written By: Twinkle on 06/30/03 at 09:45 a.m.

There are some songs that creates a cetain mood either throught the music or lyrics that affect you....

"Everything I Own" by Bread and Queen's "Bohemian Raphsody" are two of such songs.

Both tell a sad story about love that is beyond the usual. The vocals played a big part in conveying the emotions too...

Sample lyrics from "Everthing I Own"

You taught me how to love
What it's of, what it's of
You never said too much
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you
Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can't let go

Is there someone you know
You're loving them so
But taking them all for granted
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And they don't hear the words you long to say

There are really too many. But two that come to mind right off the bat are Taxi by Harry Chapin and Angie by the Rolling Stones.  I'm sure I will probably think of many more later.

Yup, "Everything I Own" tops my list, too, along with "Baby I'm-A Want You".
I would also have to say "Love is the Answer" by England Dan and John Ford Coley, and "Sour Suite" by the Guess Who - a truly great, depressing song.

"Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks. This song traumatized me when I was little, and to this day it still gets to me.  :'(

Also, "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear some Flowers in your Hair)" by Scott McKenzie. It didn't have an impact on me when I was young but since growing up it makes me weepy.  I am from the SF area and the song makes me homesick and nostalgic.  :'(

Recently I was listening to the song "Galveston" by Glen Campbell and for the first time really took notice of the lyrics.  All of a sudden I found myself with tears in my eyes and thinking what a beautiful song.  There are lots of songs which can reduce me to tears!

I Love You - Climax Blues Band
When I was younger man I hadn't a care
Foolin' around, hitting the town, growing my hair
You came along and stole my heart when you entered my life
Ooh babe you got what it takes so I made you my wife

Since then I never looked back
It's almost like living a dream
And ooh I love you

You came along from far away and found me here
I was playin' around, feeling down, hittin' the beer
You picked me up from off the floor and gave me a smile
You said you're much too young, your life ain't begun, let's walk for awhile

And as my head was spinnin' 'round
I gazed into your eyes
And thought ooh I want you

Thank you babe for being a friend
And shinin' your light in my life
'cause ooh I need you

As my head was comin' round
I gazed into your eyes
And thought ooh I want you

Thanks again for being my friend
And straightenin' out my life
'cause ooh I need you

Since then I never looked back
It's almost like livin' a dream
Ooh I got you

If ever a man had it all
It would have to be me
And ooh I love you

I've only recently heard Bread's version of 'Everything I own' after years of listening to Ken Boothe's reggae version and Boy George's 1987 cover - it was quite a refreshing change.

'Mandy' by Barry Manilow is quite touching. His vocals sound really genuine. 'Bright eyes' by Simon and Garfunkle make me feel the same way.

Banananator, I can understand how Terry Jack's 'Seasons in the Sun' can traumatize you. My dad played it when I was young and I thought it was the most depressing thing I had ever heard.

"Same Auld Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg

"Met my old lover in the grocery store....

We drank a toast to innocence, we drank a toast to time,
Reliving in our eloquence, another 'auld lang syne'....

Just for a moment I was back in school, and felt that old familiar pain-
and as I turned to make my way back home, the snow turned into rain...."

This is a beautiful song. Remember?

Alright all you Canadians, I can't believe you didn't mention the most soppy pop song to come out of your country, from 1978:
DAN HILL
Sometimes When We Touch

You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly

At times I understand you
And I see how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by

At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

:P
Make me wanna fwo up!

And, my dear neighbors to the north, don't forget the one hit wonder duet by another Canadian outfit, from 1971:
The Bells
Stay Awhile
Into my room he creeps
Without making a sound
Into my dreams he peeps
With his hair all long and hanging down

How he makes me quiver
How he makes me smile
With all this love I have to give him
I guess I'm gonna stay with him awhile

She brushes the curls from my eyes
She drops her robe on the floor
And she reaches for the light on the bureau
And the darkness is her pillow once more

How she makes me quiver
How she makes me smile
With all this love I have to give her
I guess I'm gonna stay with her awhile

------ harmonica ------

How it makes me quiver
How it makes me smile
With all this love I have to give you
Guess I'm gonna stay with you awhile

How it makes me quiver
How it makes me smile
With all this love I have to give you
Guess I'm gonna stay with you awhile

Stay with you awhile

(whispered)
I guess I'm gonna stay
:o
Oooh, this is too much for me, I better scram!

Stevie Wonder's I believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever). Beautiful song.
It's not so much of a love song as it is an ideal..I think we all wish "it will be forever".
If you notice,  you can her Stevie slip in "this time" after the last chorus..its obviously a very personal song and sounds like hes hoping (but not expecting) for a new chance at everlating love..

Some songs touch me and others feel like they actually grab hold and shake me. I've heard that this is the mark of a true artist, someone who can evoke strong emotion in the audience. Anyway, some of my favorites...

Springsteen: "Candy's Room", "The River", many others
Billy Joel: "Honesty"
David Bowie: "Word on a Wing", "Letter to Hermione"
Elton John: "I've Seen That Movie Too", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", the original "Candle in the Wind" & "Friends"
Eagles: "The Last Resort", "Desperado"
Foreigner: "Waiting For A Girl Like You"
Henry Gross: "Simone"
Linda Ronstadt: "Long, Long Time"
Joni Mitchell: "People's Parties/Same Situation"
Quicksilver Messenger Service: "What About Me"
Rolling Stones: "Time Waits for No One"
Roxy Music: "Just Another High"

More recent (non-70's) stuff...
10,000 Maniacs: "What's the Matter Here"
Paula Cole: "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone"
Indigo Girls: "Prince of Darkness"
Vonda Shepard & Emily Saliers: "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow"

Pearl Jam's cover version of "Last Kiss" - Never liked the 60's original, but I can really "feel" the cover.

Oh, lest I forget, Jim Steinman's power ballads:
Celine Dion: "It's All Coming Back To Me Now"
Bonnie Tyler: "Total Eclipse of the Heart (long version)"
Meatloaf: "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad", "Heaven Can Wait", many others.

Tuesday's Gone,Simple Man, Thing's Goin On, Free Bird (mostly because it reminds me of Ronnie and what the band would have went onto had that plane not went down), I Never Dreamed, all by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Seasons In the Sun was a good call.

Some John Denver stuff : Poems and Prayers and Promises, Leavin on a Jet Plane, For Baby For Bobby, Rocky Mountain High, Annies Song.

Was Bridge Over Troubled Water 70's ? If so, I have to add the greatest love song ever written to my list.

Some lesser known Eagles songs : The Last Resort, Sad Cafe, Pretty Maids All in a Row, Saturday Night........better known maybe: In the City, New Kid in Town.

KISS : Beth

The song IF and I have no idea who it was by.

The Rainbow Connection (written by Paul Williams and performed by Kermit the Frog :) )

I'm sure there's tons of other 70's songs that bring that kind of feeling to me, just gone brain dead.

"Sometimes In Winter" from Blood, Sweat, and Tears second album is a gorgeous song. Also their cover of Billie Holliday's "God Bless the Child" is absolutely STUNNING. I think David Clayton Thomas really nailed the vocals on that song,he sings it like he MEANS it! Also a lot of Chicago's songs bring back great memories for me. "Color My World",with it's simple and heartfelt lyrics,is one of the most beautiful love songs of the 70's! Also, Yes's "Fragile" and "Close To The Edge" were cool 70's albums.

Oh, wow!  'Seasons in the Sun' was killer.  The lyrics were good, too. Someone told me once that Rod Mckuen(?) wrote those lyrics.  I knew he had a book out with the same title, but I never verified his credit to the lyrics.

Okay, yeah, he co-wrote it:

Speaking of Terry Jacks, didn't he have a sister by the name of Susan Jacks?  She did a song called, "Which Way You Going, Billy?"
