Does anyone remember the show "EMERGENCY"  with John Gage and Roy Desoto?  Captain Mike Stanley, Chet, Marco, Mike, Dr. Brackett, Dr. Early, Dr. Morton, Nurse Dixie McCall.

Oh yeah.. great show!  It had some pretty good action in it!  I actually liked it better than CHiPs.  I used to watch it right after "SWAT".   :)

Of course, how can we forget Johnny Gage????

the actor who played Roy DeSoto recently played in Rose Madder (Steven King Movie).

Randolph Mantooth (Gage) was on General Hospital when I used to watch it!  That was a treat and so was seeing Don West (Lost in Space) again.

I loved Emergency. Used to watch it religiously. I always loved all of Johnny's antics. And Roy just allowed Johnny to be Johnny.  ;D  I always thought that Dixie had a thing for Dr. Bracket but it was the other doctor (played by Bobby Troop) who she (Julie London) was married to.

I loved Emergency.  In fact, I believe that the shows are coming out in stores on DVD.  Randolph Mantooth was a hotty.  I think he still is.  He was just on As The World Turns for five weeks.  He took over for someone that had to go in for surgery.  Randy still looks good.  He also got married last August to Kristen Connors.  Boo Hoo!!!!

I am on the Randolph Mantooth Web-Site Fan Club.  The Announcer must of made a mistake because Randolph Mantooth only goes by either Randolph or Randy.  He is never referred to as Randall.

I thought the show was very educational.  It wasn't a silly show.  Did you know that all the emergency calls that came through Station 51 were actual 911 calls?  They were re-inacted.

I didn't know that.  When I was a kid, my favourite episode was the multipart one about the forest fires.

One of the things I like about that show is that it didn't seem to have the holier-than-thow attitudes you find in characters in shows like "ER" and such.   :P

I caught a couple of episodes a few months ago and it's funny to see the fire trucks looking so old now.  I still think it's neat how they transmit the electrocardiogram (betcha didn't think I could spell that, eh?  :) ) via radio to Rampart.

Also, a friend of mine says that the original fire hall in the show is still there and that the Rampart district is pretty much a crime ridden ghetto.  Can anyone verify that?

KMG365 is the LA Fire Department radio transponder that sits on Mount Baldy.

Each of the LA Emergency services has their own radio transponder which relays radio signals to the area.  That helps all of the crews in the field to hear all radio calls, no matter where they are.

If you listen on some episodes of Adam-12, they will give out the callsign KMG367, which is the LAPD Transponder.  I know they have said the transponder callsign in CHiPs a few times, but I forget what it was.

A little more for those that remember Emergency!, but may have forgotten:

Emergency! was a spin-off of "Adam-12", both shows were created and produced by Jack Webb (Of Dragnet fame).

In 1974 they had a spin-off called "The Rangers", which featured the adventures of forest rangers in the Yosemite National Park.

It only ran one season, and one reason it was cancelled was because of the National Park Service pulling their authorization to film in the park.

It seems during the filming of the pilot episode they had a rescue of a climber trapped in his sleeping bag on one of the cliff faces in the park.  In order to make the shot better, they painted the rock to dull the reflection.  The Park Service got so upset at this (and other issued including the traffic they caused and the litter) that they pulled the permit.  The show ended after only one season.

They also had a spin-off "Emergency+4" on Saturday morning.  It was a cartoon show, and I thought it was pretty cool.  Then again, I was only 8 when it came out.  :)

A little bit of trivia:  the Squad 51 truck they drove in the series was an authentic Chrysler fire department vehicle.  After the seried ended in 1978, Universal Studios donated the truck to the LA Fire Department.

The rig was placed with a training unit, but during emergencies it was occasionally placed into service as a functioning fire truck!

In 1999, they refurbished the rig and placed into mint condition.  It now sits in the LA Fire Department museum.  I remember a year or so ago seeing a spot about that (I think it was on the History Chanel), and they got some of the old cast members together to see the refurbished unit.

OK, enough obscure trivia and old memories for now.  :)  But if you want to see what Swuad 51 look like now, here is the web site:

Well, if you look in the 2000 board and read the postings about Hollywood, you will understand.

Hollywood (and most of California) does not live in the normal reality.  To them, appearance is much more important then substance.  That is why they can take a classic like "Hunchback Of Notradame", and totally change the end to give it a happy ending.  If anybody ever read the Victor Hugo story, you will know how it really ended.

From what I remember, the quartz in the rock reflected to much light into the camera, so they painted it to dull the reflection.  I guess it never occured to them to use gells and filters to dull this reflection from the outside.  But as usual, they did not care what damage they did, they only wanted what they wanted.

That's a typical attitude among people that have the slightest bit of self-serving ignorance.  They probably think that they are out in the middle of no where so who would notice it? .. or painting one "little" rock isn't going to end the world.

It probably won't (I hope!  :) ) but unfortunately, millions of other people are thinking the same way.    99.9% of smokers exhibit this attitude everytime they toss their butts out their window or onto the ground.

But I must say that I loved camping/backpacking at an extremely young age (thanks Dad!) and that show made me want to become a forest ranger when I got older.  Almost did too.

Well, that is typical of them.  After all, most of them have no idea what camping is really like.  To them, sitting back in their Star Waggon is "camping" for the most part.

Well, I am a smoker myself.  But please change that to "Some Smokers".  I would NEVER throw a cigarette out a window.  Living in Idaho and California taught me respect for the dry brush.  I either put it in an ashtray, or "field strip" it and put it in my pocket.  (Field stripping a cigarette is crushing it so the tobbaco is scattered on the ground, and the paper and filter go into my pocket for the trash later on.  This is something most people in the military learn.

I can tell you stories about Hollywood types camping.

After I got out of the Marines in 1993, I spent 1 year working for a surplus store in LA.  We had a famous actor come in with a buddy.  Seems the star had just finished a big movie shoot, and wanted to go camping.  They proceeded to buy the best of everything, with the total comming to around $900.  Then he was amazed we did not accept American Express.  For more of his visit, read my post about Hollywood in the 2000 message board about having to explain to him how "501 shrink-to-fit Levi jeans" worked.

To Hollywood types, camping is going to some sanatized park in a $50k motor home.  Very few have any idea what "roughing it" is really like.

Uh-oh, this may turn into a "The People You Meet On The Trail" camping subject.. heheh  :)

I've noticed over the past 7 or 8 years a noticable increase in the number of smokers I meet in the back country.  And it coincides with the increase in butts I find along the way.  A buddy of mine and I slogged our way up a steep mountain trail for a couple kilometres, when we got to the top, we took a rest and shortly after a couple of guys carrying more weight in their gut than in their packs sat down and proceeded to light up.  I guess they were getting too much oxygen in their lungs!  ;D

LOL!!!!  So true.

I also remember when I was stationed in Los Angeles in the early 1980's, and a Gunnery Sergeant I knew ran in the first LA Marathon.  And yes, he smoked during most of the run.

He even had the photograph of him crossing the finish line enlarged, with a cigarette in his mouth (it was even posted in some of the local papers).

And yes, he finished in the top 10% of the runners.

But most hikers and campers now have no realization what it is like.  Back in the 1970's camping was very popular.  And most middle class families had either a cabover camper or a van conversion.  Now, they have huge motorhomes with satellite TV and internet connections.  All the comforts of home as you camp in a sterile KOA 5 miles from the freeway.

In November I bought a 1975 van conversion, which a prior owner had ripped out all the camping fixtures (stove, sink, ice box).  I am working on replacing them all to get it into camping shape.  And this weekend I am putting in another old standard of the 1970's, a CB radio.  :)

Randolph Mantooth was a MAJOR HOTTIE! And Kevin Tighe looked good as a sandy blonde. I don't think Tighe was as handsome with the dark hair.I think the show made people aware of the need for paramedic and EMT services in their communities. Often paramedics are the difference between life and death. Also the role of the FIRST RESPONDER is important. often it is a policeman or a fireman equipped with stuff like the AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR,oyxgen, and other first aid gear that makes the difference BEFORE the paramedics and ambulance crew arrives on scene!! ;)

And then the bookie that had a massive heart attack while manning several phones to take illegal bets! It looked like the poor sap was doomed but after several attempts at defibrillation they gave him some drugs and then shocked him again. He got his heartbeat back, and even bantered with Johnny and Roy while they took him out on a stretcher to the ambulance. What a colorful charachter he was! :P ;D

There is one episode that I remember clearly, because it was a parody of a local TV celebrety.

"Cal" Worthington is famous in LA where he owns several car dealerships.  Even though he is now in his 80's, he still does commercials for them.

He did them in the 1950's with his dog, spot.  Then, they got surreal.  By the early 1970's, the commercials would open with the announcer going "Here's Cal Worthington, and his dog spot!"  And next to cal, would be animals from seals, to bengal tigers, to bears, to almost anything else you could imagine.

They did a play on that on one episode, having a car dealer being mauled in a car by a lion if I remember right.
