Subject: Electric Football!

Who else had the electric football game with the little plastic figures that, in theory anyway, were supposed to run plays on the little metal field just like real football players.

In reality, they tended to run around in circles, but it was fun anyway. There was a special "quarterback/kicker" figure that was supposed to throw like Bart Starr and kick like Garo Yepremian, but usually threw like Garo Yepremian and kicked like a little leaguer.

I got this for either a birthday or Christmas, it must have been 1971. I know this because the game always came with the teams from the previous season's Super Bowl. Mine came with the Baltimore (NOT Indianapolis!) Colts in white jerseys and the Dallas Cowboys in blue. This was the 1970/January 1971 SB matchup, so it must have been my November 1971 b-day or Xmas 1971.

I have always been a Green Bay fan, so I ordered a set of Packer figures in green jerseys, and I think I also got their NFC Central (now NFC North) rivals Detroit, Minnesota, and Chicago in white "away" jerseys. Tampa Bay, who would later be in the same division for a while (although they are not anymore) was not even in the league then.

Anyway, the game board and figures have long since been thrown away, but I still remember having them. About the only things I still have from the electric football set are the Baltimore and Dallas pennants that came with it.

I had one....I also had "Talking Football" in 1971...you had small records with offensive plays on one side then you opponent had to spin it to the defensive selection on the other side...you then popped the record down into the little red box machine you held in your hand and listened to the result of the play.

That had to be the most wanted toy for a sports minded kid in the 70's. But it turned out to be the stupidest toy of all time. You had no control what so ever over your team. Your players might be going around in circles or going backwards, or sideways. They had little brushes underneath the base that you could supposedly control their direction(didn't work) :-[ This was the most ridiculous game around. >:(

Yeah I had one of those I think I bought it from my uncle when he had a garage sale.  It was more of a late 70s model.  It was the Steelers vs. the 49ers.  It looked fairly realistic too.  I dont know what ever happened to it.

Hmm, that's strange because I thought they always came with two teams that met in a Super Bowl, but Pittsburgh and San Francisco never did. Pittsburgh dominated the late 70s, San Fran did not get good until the early 80s by which time the Bradshaw-Greene-and Co. Steelers' run had ended.

As I remember, all of the other teams were available through a catalog that came with the game as well.

This was the GAME!  If i could get back with a bud who lives 50 miles away, i might still be playing it.

We used to have round robins in the hood between us figuring out who was the best with what team.  He used to kill us with Chicago.  I could fare quite well with Denver (Denver?).

Yeah, you had to order any other team you wanted.  He had the catalog.  Really what you did was order figurines in representate colors, and they came with a sticker pack so you could number the guys how you saw fit.  They came in a few different poses that resembled a typical move of their position so you could get an idea how to use them.  But you could also order individual figures to replace others, or alter your line-ups.

The adjustable contact "teeth" at the base of those figures must've been technological breakthroughs for the time.  to be able to rotate them and make the guy go in whichever direction you wanted him to (kinda).  I could never figure the kicker out though.  And typically we never wanted to use him.  Usually his leg was so powerful you couldn't find the ball after you kicked it!
