Subject: About Jim Croce

Written By: Twinkle on 08/12/03 at 06:30 a.m.

I have just found out one of my favorite song is called "I Got A Name" by Jim Croce.  Previously I didn;t have a chance to find out the song title and singer.

I'd like to hear your view about his singer and his songs ?

Like what are your favorite songs ? Does he stand out from the other singer/songwriter ? has he any hits ? etc etc

A singer/songwriter supreme, this guy, who only ever appeared here once - at the Cambridge Festival in 1973...

Although he had not one hit record to his credit here, he was building a very strong following, until tragedy struck...

On September 20th 1973, he was touring en route to Texas in a private aircraft which crashed in Louisiana - killing him and his guitarist Maury Muelheisen...

And the cruellest twist of all? His records then started selling like never before - culminating in one of his biggest hits - "Time In A Bottle"  - which stormed to #1 by the end of the year...

If that wasn't enough, as 1974 dawned, he also held the #1 AND #2 album slots in the US - as far as I'm aware, this has never been equalled...

A much missed performer - whatever he may have acheived if the tragedy had not happened is something we'll never know...but at least there are his recordings to remember him by - such is the strength of the man's work, they are all readily available (even over here)...

My favourites include all that have been mentioned up to this point (bar "Leroy Brown" which was ever-so-slightly weak), and may I also toss in "Alabama Rain"...beautiful...
