Subject: #1 Song On This Day Back In...(U.S. charts)

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 08/20/03 at 12:15 a.m.

Hi guys!  It's time to put up another list of the songs that were number one on this day, for each year of the 1970's.  Paul will be coming by a little later to post the list for the UK charts.  :D

Please feel free to rate these songs and/or comment.  :)

1970 - (They Long To Be) Close To You - Carpenters

1971 - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - Bee Gees

1972 - Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan

1973 - Touch Me In The Morning - Diana Ross

1974 - The Night Chicago Died - Paper Lace

1975 - Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees

1976 - Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John with Kiki Dee

1977 - Best Of My Love - The Emotions

1978 - Three Times A Lady - Commodores

1979 - Good Times - Chic

Note: You may notice that some of these carried over from the last list.  That means they stayed in the #1 position for at least several weeks.

A fine old list there, CF...

1970 - (They Long To Be) Close To You - Carpenters
As I've mentioned before, beautiful without being too sickly...

1971 - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - Bee Gees
The only UK non-runner chartwise out of this lot...a good song and good performance, but the song is more attributed to Al Green nowadays, who recorded a fantastic cover...

1972 - Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan
Good old Gilbert! Who else would've got away with a song dealing with suicide contemplation, the questioning of religion and eventually death and still topped the chart?!! Great song...

1973 - Touch Me In The Morning - Diana Ross
Good effort from Diana - starts off as barely a whisper, but swells into one of her trademark climatic endings...

1974 - The Night Chicago Died - Paper Lace
Revenge must've been sweet for the Nottingham lads who saw their last effort (Billy Don't Be A Hero) pinched from them and took to #1...this is a much better song than that, but they 'died' chartwise themselves soon after...

1975 - Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees
Them Gibbs again, with an enormous shift in musical direction...a very catchy, clever and complex song...

1976 - Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee
One of two #1's that were also top of the stack at the same time over here...a fine song, but Elton did lose his way for a while after it...

1977 - Best Of My Love - Emotions
Great disco romp from the ladies...I can't help but feel I've heard that intro before...

1978 - Three Times A Lady - Commodores
And here's the other simultaneous #1...okay, I know you've heard it countless times, but can it be faulted?

1979 - Good Times - Chic
The bass riff that launched a thousand others...some critics may moan about disco as a whole, but I've yet to hear a bad word said against this group...groundbreaking...

Once again I could easily play these songs and enjoy them now.
Wonder if i'll be able to say that in 30 years about todays music.

1970 - (They Long To Be) Close To You - Carpenters
Karen Carpenter had a very beautiful, rich voice and just about everything she did would get high marks from me. :)

1971 - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - Bee Gees
You can't go wrong with anything the Bee Gees did.  They were incredibly talented!

1972 - Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan
Sad song, lovely voice.  Takes me back to my childhood days.

1973 - Touch Me In The Morning - Diana Ross
Not bad.

1974 - The Night Chicago Died - Paper Lace
This is another song that reminds me of my childhood.  Where did they go after they did this one?

1975 - Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees
See comments for 1971.

1976 - Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John with Kiki Dee
I commented on this one in Paul's thread.  If I hadn't heard the song so much I'd probably have more appreciation for it.

1977 - Best Of My Love - The Emotions
Classic R&B, but I think I prefer The Three Degrees.

1978 - Three Times A Lady - Commodores
I also commented on this one in Paul's thread.  Very sugary, but still a good song.

1979 - Good Times - Chic
I love this one!  The heavy bass is what makes the song! 8)
