I can't believe The Boomtown Rats were 1979! God that makes me feel old.

There's not one of those songs I wouldn't play today and still enjoy...except maybe Gary Glitters but that's got nothing to do with the song.

...in fact, right now...!

1970 The Wonder Of You - Elvis Presley
Originally a hit for Ray Peterson way back in 1959, Elvis liked this so much he started to slip it in to his Vegas act - this was, in fact, recorded live there. A huge performance by the man, it rips the original to shreds...sadly, it was to be the final #1 of his lifetime...

1971 I'm Still Waiting - Diana Ross
Strange one this...wasn't actually a new record, it appeared on her "Everything's Everything" LP of the previous year...legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ Tony Blackburn liked it so much that he played it incessantly, forcing Motown UK to release the thing as a single...an okay song, if a bit twee...

1972 School's Out - Alice Cooper
No stopping this! An anthem for kids of all ages knocking off for the summer break, and inciting the fear of God-knows-what into the adults! A five-star gee-tar riff attached, this remains one of his best...

1973 I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am) - Gary Glitter
Still there! Noisy thing with motorbike noises and echo-ey drums...probably okay at the time...

1974 When Will I See You Again - Three Degrees
The perfect example of Philly soul, girl-group harmony and a simple, yet effective lyric combining to create something that is simply bee-yoo-tiful...love it...!

1975 Can't Give You Anything (But My Love) - Stylistics
Whilst the group's star was on the wane in their native US, over here the hits kept coming...this, their only #1, was produced and arranged by the late Van McCoy - who, IMO, overdid it slightly with the orchestra...good stuff, though...

1976 Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee
Reg & Pauline still belting it out...nice little plodder...I must make mention of Dr Hook's 'A Little Bit More', an excellent song which patiently waited for five weeks at #2, but couldn't quite get there...

1977 Angelo - Brotherhood Of Man
Fresh from their previous years' Eurovision win, the BOM settled into the middle of the road market...this was your typical poor-boy-loves-rich-girl song, which really didn't have a lot going for it...but it sold...

1978 Three Times A Lady - Commodores
The song that catapulted the Commodores into the big league here - as mentioned on CF's thread, played almost completely to death, but insanely difficult to criticise...wonderful...

1979 I Don't Like Mondays - Boomtown Rats
Bob & Co still there - probably their best work...

1970 - The Wonder Of You - Elvis Presley
I'm not familiar with this song.

1971 - I'm Still Waiting - Diana Ross
I'm not familiar with this song either. :-/

1972 - School's Out - Alice Cooper
I was never that fond of Mr. Cooper, although some of his ballads weren't too bad (i.e. "You And Me", "I Never Cry").

1973 - I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am) - Gary Glitter
To be honest, the only song I know by Gary Glitter is "Rock And Roll Part 1" (or was it Part 2?).

1974 - When Will I See You Again - Three Degrees
This is a beautiful song just like Paul said.  I remember it well from my childhood and love singing along with it when I hear it.  Sadly, this one did not make it to the top in the U.S.

1975 - Can't Give You Anything (But My Love) - Stylistics
I love The Stylistics but I am not familiar with this piece.

1976 - Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee
I think I enjoyed this song more at the time it came out.  It's been played to death and just doesn't hold its appeal for me anymore.

1977 - Angelo - Brotherhood Of Man
I'm not familiar with this song.

1978 - Three Times A Lady - Commodores
Good tune but very sugary.  Lionel has a wonderful voice that lends itself well to this style.

1979 - I Don't Like Mondays - Boomtown Rats
The circumstances surrounding this song are very sad, and Bob does a good job conveying that.
