They're still around in Australia.  Mostly in Northern New South Wales and out of the way places.   You can still get a great vegetarian meal for around $5.  They always add a lot of colour and interest to a place! :)

There are a lot of them, all over the world.  I worked for a small offshoot of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISCON).  They are a wacky group, and the more you know about them, the creepier the religion seems.  Anyone who wants to know the truth about this group should read "Monkey on a Stick."

It's a fascinating book, and from  my own experiences, I'd say it doesn't exaggerate the weirdness and criminal activities of these people.  There are also good hearted Krishas, of course; they never go anywhere in the organization. It's a case of the scum rising to the top.

There's still a big Krishna temple in Newcastle, near where I live, with many followers.  They are often out on the streets doing some parade or other!

Thank you for all the responses, one of my biggest memories of the late 70's was living in San Diego and going to the downtown movie theater and hanging out with the Hare Krishnas and gettin high and then watching the double feature "Up In Smoke" & " The Warriors". Two of the best flicks ever made.

Funny you should mention the Hare Krishnas,a few weeks ago my son and I went to Ocean City in Maryland (we live near Baltimore) and I was telling him how back in the 70's the Hare Krishnas were all over the boardwalk giving away religious paraphenalia. I haven't seen any since then.

In both Airplane 1 and 2, the same actor played a "Hairy Krisna".

Look closely, and you will see it is David Leisure.  He was much more famous as our favorite car salesman, "Joe Isuzu".

I wish I had my old Honda, with a "Joe Isuzu For President" bumpersticker.  :P

You are right!  I remeber recognizing him last time I caught Airplane on USA, or TNT, or FX, or .... heck name a cable channel, any cable channel it could be true.
