Subject: #1 On This Day - The Australian Version

Written By: Paul_UK on 09/25/03 at 05:51 a.m.

Hi folks! Keeping in the spirit of all things global, I decided to do something a little different this time around with the #1's...all these being from Australia! Some very good stuff here, too...one or two I've not heard myself, but there may be a helpful Aussie on board to clue us up...!

Anyway, here they are for your enjoyment...hope the info's correct, as this was researched on the quick...(corrections, of course, gratefully accepted!)

CF will be along later with the US stuff...

1970 - In The Summertime - The Mixtures

1971 - Daddy Cool - Drummond

1972 - Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast - Wayne Newton

1973 - Never Never Never - Shirley Bassey

1974 - Evie (Part 1) - Stevie Wright

1975 - Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain & Tennille

1976 - Dancing Queen - Abba

1977 - You're Moving Out Today - Carole Bayer Sager

1978 - You're The One That I Want - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John

1970 - In The Summertime - The Mixtures  - ? -Know the song, of course, but not this version...which wiped the floor with MJ's original chartwise...still not 'found' a copy yet...!

1971 - Daddy Cool - Drummond ? - Chipmunk song, eh Fuss? Now that has got me intregued...! Another one for the 'wants' list...

1972 - Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast - Wayne Newton 2 - awfully mawkish piece of sentimental slop...

1973 - Never Never Never - Shirley Bassey 3 - Dame Shilrey wrapping her powerful pipes round this rather ho-hum ballad...proved to be her last Top Ten here...

1974 - Evie (Part 1) - Stevie Wright ? - The title is familiar...very familiar...I may have heard it in passing, but can't place it...if it's that good, Fuss, then I may partake...

1975 - Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain & Tennille 4 - happy, jaunty number...

1976 - Dancing Queen - Abba 5 - Heh! No stopping this...! One of their best...

1977 - You're Moving Out Today - Carole Bayer Sager 4 - despite being a talented songwriter herself, this was not one of hers, but co-written by Bette Midler...very clever lyrics, too...

1978 - You're The One That I Want - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John 5 - I need say no more...!

1979 - My Sharona - The Knack 4 - fine stomper with a classic two-note riff...

1974 - Evie (Part 1) - Stevie Wright

...heh! Managed to 'borrow' a copy off of someone last night...

And, I must admit, it's extremely impressive...hard to believe that this didn't crack either the US or UK market...

I'll rate it as 4...if you like good rock music, do try and 'find' a copy...highly recommended...

Right...the last word on this, I promise...!

Thanks to an anonymous benefactor (whose name rhymes with 'Fuss'...!), I'm now tooled up with the missing songs...

In The Summertime - Mixtures 4, yes - good cover...takes a bit of a while to get used to after I've MJ rammed down my earholes all these years...but not ruined in any way...stands equal to it...(but still not as good as the mighty 'Pushbike Song'!)

Daddy Cool - Drummond 3, has instantly embedded itself into the 'Top 5 strangest songs I have heard' category...bizarre! The song I know - it's a cover of the old Rays tune of the 50's, and it later charted over here via a retro-rocker group called Darts...but, this is one hell of a off-the-scale strange one! It may grow on me yet!

Thanks all! It's been an education...!
