1970 - The Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson & The
Miracles
You've got us to thank for this! Motown in the UK had learned by this stage how to re-issue product, they came up trumps with this long-forgotten LP track from '67 and managed to make it sell almost everywhere!...superb...5

1971 - Brand New Key - Melanie
Poor old Mel! Up to this point she was the critics' favourite, then came up with this piece of enjoyable fluff and almost killed her career stone dead! Did make our top in a roundabout way, when the Wurzels re-hashed it as 'Combine Harvester' (but that's enough of that!) 4

1972 - Me And Mrs Jones - Billy Paul
Gut-wrenchingly beautiful song...and no mistake! Superb! 5

1973 - The Most Beautiful Girl - Charlie Rich
The 'Silver Fox' doing the business with yer typical guilt-ridden country favourite...maudlin, of course, but enjoyable...4

1974 - Cat's In The Cradle - Harry Chapin
Top-notch singer/songwriter who was taken from us much too early...undoubtedly his finest...5

1975 - Fly, Robin, Fly - Silver Convention
Attractive-ish song with catchy violin hook...3

1976 - Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) - Rod Stewart
Fine one from Roderick...well-remembered number...4

1977 - How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees
Lovely, drippy, mellow effort from the brothers...one of their finest...5

1978 - Le Freak - Chic
There's good disco and there's great disco...Chic had the uncanny knack of making everything of theirs sound great...this included...5

1979 - Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes
Good number with unexpected story-twist...this guy also did some other wonderful stuff apart from this...4

1970 - The Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles--OK, but overplayed (like all Motown) around here.

1971 - Brand New Key - Melanie--Ack.

1972 - Me And Mrs. Jones - Billy Paul--OK.

1973 - The Most Beautiful Girl - Charlie Rich--Don't know it.

1974 - Cat's In The Cradle - Harry Chapin--Great ballad, probably my second-favorite Chapin song.

1975 - Fly, Robin, Fly - Silver Convention--Huh?

1976 - Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) - Rod Stewart--Good song...gotta love something banned in the UK.

1977 - How Deep Is Your Love - The Bee Gees--I.  Hate.  The.  Brothers.  Gibb.

1978 - Le Freak - Chic--OK...not a big disco fan, though.

1979 - Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes--Good song...and I think Holmes was/is a New Englander (like me).
