Subject: #1 On Christmas Day...'70's Version UK

Written By: Paul_UK on 12/18/03 at 01:25 p.m.

More helpings of the Christmas turkeys...!

1970 - I Hear You Knocking - Dave Edmunds

1971 - Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West) - Benny Hill

1972 - Long-Haired Lover From Liverpool - Little Jimmy Osmond

1973 - Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade

1974 - Lonely This Christmas - Mud

1975 - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

1976 - When A Child Is Born - Johnny Mathis

1977 - Mull Of Kintyre - Wings

1978 - Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord (Medley) - Boney M

...what happened to 1979? Well, Criz had already grafted it on to her 1980's listing which you'll find, funnily enough, in the 80's section (should you have a strong-enough stomach for it...!)

A few random spoutings of this little stack...

1970 - I Hear You Knocking - Dave Edmunds
Had it all gone according to plan, Clive Dunn's sickly 'Grandad' would be sitting here...as it was, the Welsh guitarist's splendidly lo-fi rendidtion of the Smiley Lewis RnB classic won the day...for that we should be truly grateful...!

1971 - Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West) - Benny Hill
Surpassed ourselves this year, we did! This saga of the west country milkman was the biggie, but Benny's better known for his TV comedy show, which by the 1980's had become somewhat un-PC...he died in 1992, all but forgotten by the entertainment industry...

1972 - Long-Haired Lover From Liverpool - Little Jimmy Osmond
Okay, I admit it...I was one of the people who made a success out of this record...! Mums, dads and kids loved it - teenagers thought it was the end of the world! The song was written in the days of Beatlemania, and when told about this, Little Jim replied 'Who are the Beatles?'...Bless him...!

1973 - Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade
The biggie! Has become such a prime ingredient of a British Christmas that it's always guaranteed to be heard over the holidays at some point...brilliant rousing number...and a special mention to the other 'biggie' that year, Wizzard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday', which out-Spectored Spector...class!

1974 - Lonely This Christmas - Mud
From the sublime to the maudlin...Mud were huge at the time, so any old dirge by them would sell...and this did! Sung in a Presley-like manner, if that's any help...

1975 - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Despite Christmas (Greg Lake's 'I Believe In Father Christmas), novelty (Laurel & Hardy's 'Trail Of The Lonesome Pine) and a bit of both (Wombling Merry Christmas!) being represented, this year's honours went to 'operatic rock'...quite simply one of the most inventive things ever stuck on a piece of plastic...super...!

1976 - When A Child Is Born - Johnny Mathis
Mellow-ish song about 'The Second Coming', which was sung sweetly by Johnny (his only #1 here), but is sadly altogether disappointing...

1977 - Mull Of Kintyre - Wings
Macca's homage to his Scottish home (at the time) sold like nothing he'd ever recorded post-Beatles before or since...appeals to many, but not me - I normally leave the room long before the bagpipes start! Strangely, never achieved much in the US, where the insipid 'Girls School' was the A-side...

1978 - Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord (Medley) - Boney M
Calypso-disco work out of the old Harry Belafonte number plus another one bolted on...still remains one of the biggest-selling singles here ever! Just to prove the public never learn, the mastermind of the group, Frank Farian, gave us Milli Vanilli a decade later...!
